Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,, I figured out what happened to my long oost.. the computer does not recognize typing time as "active" time ,, so it auto shuts down after so many minutes..

the cluck has a meanness that surfaces when she has chicks.. not many other chickens will mess with her...If the chicks and hen are not too confined, they should be OK .. all of my birds share the roosts and get along.. there are occasional squables, but they last only seconds..

I am seriously thinking of scraping the snow away where I want to build the peacock pen.. then I will start building the pen so it is ready when the peahens start laying eggs.. In the mean time I can put the new B Red Tom and his two girlfriends in there.. the hens are laying eggs already, I think.. at least they are both trying to sit in the same nest, so eggs won't be far behind..

I am paranoid about typing time, so from now on my posts will be short..

Won't be long until those chicks are in the ugly stage. delisha sounds like you have a super mom there. What a good girl! JJ ain't that the truth about tracking it in. Thought about digging the gravel pile out of the snow bank and spreadin some around but that sounded like work. Not the diggin just the spreadin. Finally got a pic of the kids.

The friend lives in Canada..she shows Silkies,Houdans, ducks and geese and she posts on BYC..her user nic is Aoxa. Her name is Justine.she lost every thing, No injuries to humans thank goodness. The fire marshal thinks it was old wiring in the barn.

On a better note..I took pictures this morning of the new kids

Aww- so cute! That is terrible about the fire. I follow them on Facebook. Ugh- now when I look at her pictures I feel so awful. And especially that sweet dog.... Just tragic. I will be looking forward to seeing how she rebuilds.

Well I put in an order with Cackle for their Happy Cackle special. So now of course I have a quesiton for any turkey people. I am getting 2 turkeys that I will use for meat, I already have a 15 x 10 pen with a 4x4x4 square 3 sided shelter in it. Will this do for 2 meat turkeys, or if not how much should I add to it. I have room around the pen to make it larger if need be. Also can turkeys eat chick starter?

Good morning! Deli the 3rd and 4th pics are my faves. One looks like he is smelling the other one's toes. The yellow chick in the 4th one looks like his chest is all puffed up and he is doing a dance! Or maybe saying "step right up folks!"OK--I can see that this is not going to be a good typing day again! I just corrected about 8 typos in the sentence above! I hate those kind of days!

Hey Jim--there is a setting on your computer where you can lengthen the time before is "sleeps" or you can turn it off completely. Usually typing does count though...unless it takes you REALLY long to find a letter! Maybe it was just too late and your head fell on the keyboard cause you went to sleep? That is what I thought you meant at first when you said "hit the keyboard." I'm sure you can find it in the computer files area under settings. Good luck!

JJ that quail is doing well. She is a plucky little thing though! Always going after the others! Her little head is still baldish! I wish they would start laying eggs! Speaking of...since you all are getting turkey eggs I think I might crawl up into the coop loft and see if my hen is laying any up there. She is still hanging out up there...I should check her wounds too. She is staying away from the males...I might take a drive ofer to T&J's too, return their bucket and get my gloves...maybe see if I can buy a couple royal palm hens from them...I am still considering the peacocks from Beth.
CC I told her that you were interested in one. Did you want an older female or a younger one? I believe the younger ones were hatched last spring?

Finally the dogs have settled down a bit! Man they were nuts this morning. I felt like I was wading through them in the kitchen as I tried to get the coffee made.
DrH you can hardly tell those cats are sibs hey? WHat a size difference. We have a set of brothers like that. One is the biggest longest cat and the other is so petite you would thing it was a little female. They dont look like they cause any trouble at all in that pic!

I have read some of that Axa person's posts too Deli. She seems very knowledgeable...What a terrible thing to happen to anyone! My barn looks like crap but at least all the wiring is new. DH redid it with his brother right when we moved in. It still had the old cloth covered stuff in there mixed with the Romex kind. A real mess for sure. He put in new and a breaker box too. Unfortunately during rain--like this week, there must be some joint that gets wet cause it pops the breaker and I lose power in the coop and the shed! He cant find it though...but I am not sure he tried that hard either!

Hey, the sun looks like it is trying to pop through the clouds!

Maybe I WILL develop some energy today!
I will post the Gizzards and rice recipe...it is SO delicious! No gravy, just super flavorful buttery rice...MMMM! Yes my mouth is watering just thinking about it! LOL! The kids will be happy tonight (and so will DH cause it is NOT his favorite dish and he is out of town!) Actually, these couple of weeks that he is gone will be the ones to make all the delicious stuff that he doesnt care much for...Hey JJ, maybe I will get that beef tongue up from the freezer. I bet I could pressure cook it like Deli does with her gizzards and it wouldnt take so long...I think I will head on over to my recipe site...might have to eat something first though!
Have a great and productive day--TerriOreallylikingthatlittlebitofsunshine

turkeys can eat anything a chicken can. sounds like a song.. anything they can do we can co better..

you should not put young turkeys on ground where chickens have ever been.. up until about 13 weeks old, turkeys immune system is not very developed.. Your pen is plenty big for 2 meat turkeys..

if you can, build a raised pen off of the ground to start the turkeys in.. I keep mine in such pens until they are 13 weeks old..

turkeys are not wanderers.. they hang very close to their food source.. so they are ideal for free ranging..

hope this helps..

Apyl--that sounds fine for two turkeys. If they are the heavy ones (not heritage) they probably wont fly out if it's not covered. If they are heritage however they will fly right out and sleep in the trees! All of mine do!
I feed mine game bird food. Also, if they are on the ground where chickens have been and they arent heritage (again) you might have to give them the medicated stuff so they dont get Blackhead. Before I had mine I had the meat type and they died from blackhead caught from the chickens I guess. Over on the turkey thread you should be able to find some information.
Good luck! TerriO
