Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am 374 posts behind and will have to catch up this weekend but now ave a new problem and wondering if you have any adivce:

I have been getting 16-18 eggs per day for awhile now. Rccently there has been a slow decrease..then suddenly the last two days its dropped in half. I was suspicious that I had a egg eater. But I am now thinking it was the barn cat as I found 2 partial eggs in the box and the edges did not look pecked. Any suggestions how to break this? I have an outside run with bird netting voer it that usually kept the barn cat out. Due to the winter there are areas that the netting has gaps now-I am planning on fixing that this weekend but worried this may not stop her? (Last summer she used the netting as a hammock) TOmorrow I am thinking i am going to leave them locked up in the coop and see how many I have to help rule out an egg eater.

Feed that poor kitty some cat food. :p

BTW Angiebubs, I'm getting a dozen black/blue/splash bantam orpington eggs to hatch. Make me stop . . .

So far this year I'm adding:
Silver pencilled rocks
LF chocolate orps
Bantam b/b/s orps
White midget turkeys
And maybe red laced white cornish
Bantam BLR wyandottes

BBP I HAVE been feeding her and I think thats the problem-shes become lazy and doesnt leave the copp area anymore to hunt mice!! And OMG -your addiction wears off on me-so STOPPPP LOL. I jsut saw the cutest lil coop with a run at FF and said to Mike that I could put it inside the run and have more bantys!!!!

I had a great time meeting Ann at TO's place!! It was so much fun chicken chatting..wow that woman has the birds.1 picked up some Greenfire Basques for Ann on my way home..they are some beautiful birds. The rooster is pretty nice. She is going to really like these birds.

TO... I will never have a pet chicken in my house..its so cute to think you could change me. I love my chickens..but to me they are food. When I look at a chicken I am thinking recipes..not aprons and tu tu's. When I breed them I am thinking of breast size, and thigh meat. Smoked, BBQed, or baked.

Try ground up pumpkin seeds for worming. .. 1 garlic clove per bird too

for drugs and chemicals what was recommended ...it is a good recommendation if you choose to go that route.

If you have a cat eating 9 eggs a day, I don't think it will be a problem for long. What does a kitty coronary look like anyway?

The ferall "kitten" I found in my hen house is still hanging around. I think he may knock an egg out of the nesting box on occasion, that the chickens eat. Once I opened the back door of my nesting cupboard and found the cat sleeping with my smallest hen sitting on his back waiting to lay. They looked cozy. And me with no camera.

If it is the cat, blow out an egg or two and leave just those in a nest.. put a lot of black and red pepper inside the shell.. when kitty cracks that surprise open, he will most likely never have a craving for eggs again.. works for dogs , too..

I did not find a picture of the comfry patch.. I know I took a picture of it a long time ago, but that was before my digital camera.. did you know that some places in Europe they grow whole fields of it for cattle fodder ?

usually I am not home on Thursday nights, but Annie switched days with another gal so here I am, I just got gramma into bed.. she ate like a trooper at supper..white and brown rice and sweet & sour chicken... I ate it too, but I was not too impressed.. I would not walk across the street for some if they were giving it away..

Am starting to thinking of warming up the bators.. I (meaning DD#1) will have to give them a good cleaning first..

I should come up with a better filing system to keep track of what eggs are where.. when I have 30 different trays I cannot keep it in my head.. I can't keep them straight on paper either.. especially when I start switching trays from one bator to another..

I think I will go lurk for awhile..
