My mom JUST had a baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I'm 13) The oldest of 7, now 8. Woke up this morning to find mom and dad gone. Called and said they were fine,, and HAD A BABY BOY!!!!!!!! 7 boys now. SO EXCITED, (skipping school), TO GO SEE IT!!!

Wow it's beautiful outside! Everything is coved in ice. Even the power lines have little icicles hanging from them. Only thing is that when the bus came I found out the latch to the gate was frozen and the kids couldn't get out. So there I am with a mason jar filled with hot water a hammer trying to get the gate open

Not much has been going on here lately. Everyone seems to be doing ok. Only thing is- when I reached under Flutter to check on her eggs and remove the extras I noticed that she has what looks like a scrape on her stomach area. Its pretty red, but not open. Is it a sore from sitting on eggs> My other broody, Mary doesn't have it. Actually- is it normal to see the skin of a chicken under there? I guess I never looked.

Does anyone know when I can let the duckies swim around? I thought maybe I'd let them swim around in the kitchen sink or the bathtub, but I didn't know if they needed to be a certain age.
Loving all your chicken and chick pictures everyone!!

DD#1 came last night and worked a long time trying to get the puter to read my camera card.. No luck.. I am thinking it is something mechanical,, she insists it is software problem..

congrats Colton.. 13 eh? looks like we will have to watch our language here..

I have 8 goose eggs to set and 6 guinea eggs and 24 chicken.. a good job for today.. not going to work outside, for sure.. I'm dreaming of a white July 4th, just like the ones I never saw...

I have 43 chicken eggs due to start hatching today..

Brent, I am in contact with Dave "whippet".. he might make the bash in May.. He is doing Welsumers now..

ducks can swim at birth.. you can put them in the sink, but no not leave them unattended.. they can fatigue and drown..

I'm not an expert but with all the ducks (14 so far) I've had I let them have sink starting at 2 or 3 days old. I only give them a couple minutes at first and build up. They love it.

Ok thanks guys! Do I need to dry them off when they are done?

Good Morning everyone. Sadly everything it white again. I guess one positive to all this cold snowy weather is that I havnt started my seeds yet so they wont be indoors for an extended period and die. My oldest DD is heading to Bangor today for a spelling bee, she won her school spelling be for the Elementary side :) I dont remember if I mentioned it here or just on FB, but I have 2 silkies sitting on eggs :) Both sit side by side in the same box lol. I think they have 5 or 6 eggs under them from who knows which hens, so it will be a surprise. So far with my incubation I am on day 13 and have 13 out of 14 ducks growing and moving. As for the chicken eggs, I'm not sure. I set mostly brown and blue eggs so of course cant see a dang thing. I did set 3 white eggs and 2 of them look clear that last time I candled. I think I may try to make a candler today instead of using a flashlight and see if that helps. I'm super curious at how many fertile chicken eggs are in there.
I've got brooders to clean out today, baths for the ducks and geese, and I need to figure out something with the older duck brooder now that we have snow again and it looks like they'll be in the house for a while. I swear they dump their water 5 times a day and ruin their bedding 2 minutes after changing it. I love my ducks but jeez I dont remember the last batch being this messy and loud.

Congrats Colton on you new baby brother, how exciting. :)
