Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey Raiquee u said something about you were looking for a farmette????? I seen one for sale near hortonville, between hortonville and greenville? cant remember who has it for sale though
hmm.png
I think it was something like 5 acres?! if you want more info, just say. it's not that far from me!

raimnel, there is one right off HWY 10 that I wish I could afford..... 2 ponds, fruit trees and I think 7 acres. Earth home too so energy efficient!

Off to go get eggs and goat milk. Later gator!

Hey guys! Man, sure is close here! I can hardly breathe! Guess what? I am going to change my job focus....I am going to become a registered pet/farm sitter! I have been chatting with some folks on another thread and they "convinced me" to do it. Wasnt all that hard...I have been toying with it for a while and have done some but never became registered, bonded insured etc. I am excited!

WC--you really need to take a look in the coop section. Looking at your set-up from the front and it looks very doable! I would NOT remove that chainlink. It is a perfect run! THe lattice part is great for them going out in the winter as you said it just gets a little snow blown in. All you need to do is have a secure place for them inside the shed. Not a box really, you will want to be able to walk into it for cleaning etc. Also you will need separate boxes for them to lay eggs in. THe place you make inside your shed will have poles across for them to roost on so it will be higher than "just a box". It doesnt have to be big, I am thinking like an old cabinet with doors. Maybe you could just reach in? (I have a ton of ideas forming in my head and no way to explain them...) Hey DrH--can ya reach in there and get them out?

If you want chickens for eggs and pets you can use just about any kind you want! Some of my mixed breed ones are the best layers of all! As for taming them...if you got some youngsters now and held them and played with them they would be jumping up in your lap in no time. That is my favorite pastime--sitting in the coop on a bucket and having my hens come and "talk to me!" Lots of people here have babies and we like to share...

Nice to hear from you Raiquee! Glad you are enjoying your vacation! I totally forgot to give you some back issues of Backyard Flocks (or whatever it is called) I have been looking through them again myself! Maybe when you bring your DS out for a horseride you can get them!

FM--are you just "going down the road" for you first camping experience? You are SO LUCKY to have that park practically in your backyard! I am jealous!

Yeah our set-ups seem very similar Raimnel! I had a guy come by this morning and I hadnt let out the birds yet and he got to enjoy the 75 chickens piling out of the coop with me. Along with the turkeys and guineas running to the fence for their scratch! Love that time of day!

Well--thinking about getting something done! 'Bout time! Terri O

WC- WhooHoo for the cochins. You probably want only two if your looking for eggs on a regular basis. They do lay but do go broody often. I have 11 laying girls right now and when they are on, I get 9 or 10 eggs a day, but if they are off or it's to hot I get 1 or 2 a day. It works for me because we don't really eat alot of eggs, but get enough that if I want some I can have some. EE's would be fun because you get colored eggs. Also you might want to think about getting chicks or young pullets just so you can socilize with them early and they are friendly. And you don't need to buy a box, just take a section of your shed attached to you run area and build a wall. You want it big enough so if they say in during the winter they can move around and don't pick on each other, but also so you can get eggs and clean it out. You want roost space too. It's really not that hard once you get a plan together and then you and your son can do it together. Thats another great learning project.

Took some pics thought I would share:

Have a great sticky day everyone!

Good evening chicken people! Well I am feeling less over-whelmed today have had time to think and process the info that I got(thanks guys)! As of now I am thinking of either building a coop space under the lean to, or I found a couple of HUGE doghouse with roofs that lift I figure I could do something like that, but I was thinking perches only needed to be outside under the lean-to, if I need perches inside as well I'll have to build a coop with boxes along the wall of the shed. Just not sure I want to cut into my shed? As far as breeds go, I'l have to do lots of research, if I get 2 eggs a day i'm happy so maybe some purely for looks, reading the amendment it says they have to be egg-laying hens though(how would they know?).
Terri did alot of looking in the coop section got some ideas

Becky, I do like the idea of the E.E.'s! And love the pics can't wait to post some of my lil guy with his chickens. Soon enouph..

This pic makes it look smaller than it is! The lean-to is 8 ft. high. The fence panels are 6ft.
Yesterday I felt like I needed chickens today, Today I still feel like I need some chickens!

You need a roost in the area that they will sleep in. They perch at night and you don't want them to sleep in your nesting boxes as they poop all night long. As long as whatever you put up is draft free they will be fine. If you put a nice deep litter on the floor that area should stay nice and warm in the winter. You should go over by BCC and check out her coops, I consider her a pro.

Had a fun day cleaning out the barn, felt I needed to do it after yesterday. Did all my finals and now I have two weeks off!

God do I need it, this semester was hard and the next one's even harder.

Nice storm we had, went out there to check and round up everyone before and the wind was so bad that my pullets were rolling around.

Thats what I get for having all fluffy butts. Got everyone in as it started to pour, I got soaked but they didn't. The winds blow over a 12in diameter tree over by the old barn foundation. Guess what we will be doing tomorrow.

Just one more thing to do. DH b-day is sunday and we are having a party so got to get it cleaned up. Oh well. Have a great night everyone!

Thanks alot Buck Creek, I will send you a message when I'll Be around the area and will stop by, Awesome!

So with a lil pushing and nudging from the other half, I'm entertaining the idea of opening the whole shed

.
It has no windows or ventilation and a wood floor, So my newest questions are, would I have to vent or put in windows? How bad does the smell get? I would clean regularly but this would be a huge area for 8 chickens and a huge area to buy shavings for all the time. SHould I put down a rubber floor mat? How long before my shed rots? I already have a big loft and wood shelves to make nest boxes on oh it seems like it would be so much easier, Huh Hmmm

Can't wait for the Waupaca county fair, want to see some chickens!

when I seen your pic of the whole shed and lean to, I was gonna say "oh come on just convert the WHOLE shed!" and you beat me to it! see it is contagoius!! but be carefull its not to big. I think BCC would be the one to talk to on what is to big for so many birds. I just think about the winter and them trying to keep warm.
tell me about the storms! we were out of power for ever! we had to start bailing water from the basement! oh and look! I got my pond!!!

only problem is, is that I didn't dig it! we got so much rain from 2 storms tonight that our ducks could litteraly swim in the water "puddles". when I went to close coop doors tonight I was walking in ankle deep water almost every where. thankfully our fatties are up on a higher ground right now! the trail that they left behind them is ALL flooded. in the pic you can barely see them but the ducks are all standing out side like DUH it's raining, maybe if we hold REAL still we wont get rained on! their on the right of the pic by the table and chair. Hey, see the tent? the next pic on my camera, the tent fell down from the weight. our duck coop is completly surrounded by water, its even standing in the water. I gotta a pic of it but it is too far off. it was raining so hard that you cant see the trees behind the shed (in the pic) any ways good night all, I know there was more I was going to see but my brain is shut ting dooooowwwwnnnn!

Good Morning Everyone! Wow it's getting harder to address everyone's posts. Raimnel Boy I guess you did get some rain! Only a brief shower here, thankfully. WC that would be a very good idea to stop at BCC's. She is beyond a doubt one of the most knowledgeable people you'll ever meet. And she's really cool too! Is there any way you could close in the lean to area? Take the lattuce off and put up plywood? Hard to see but is that a wood floor in the lean to? That could be a problem. I have access to used rubber belting of various thickness and widths if you want to go that route. Windows can be gotten at any curbside. I mounted mine with hinges at the top so I can swing them up to air out the coop. They open into the run otherwise you would want to put some wire mesh over them. Bec really cool pics! Made me laugh at the one with DD7! TO That sounds right up your alley! Really hope it works out for you! Raiquee sounds like your having a good time up der. You sure that pike wasn't 35lbs?

Should go out this morning and finish my clean up but don't have a lot of gumption this morning. L and I were dancing AND singing to JP in the kitchen last night. Yes alcohol was a factor. Picked up BFF's pressure cooker yesterday going to start canning carrots next week. L is going to finish making more salsa and spagetti sauce today so I'll do the canning. Hey that's my ticket out of going outside.
