Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

JJ.......do you till the top every couple of years? My Dad's patch is over 30 years old, and my neighbors is over 40. They never replant and the beds are still going strong.
I don't till up the plants... I just till off the dead weeds and previous years dead above ground tops.

The roots are way down and not reachable by the tiller. Tilling my way puts some air in the soil and loosens it up for the plants to grow through.

I will post pics when it comes up to show you all the difference between 20 year+ and 5-10 year shoots.

That's right I'll show ya, I'l show you all! lol

and

We add plants to make the patch bigger each year. As I age I am making the asparagus garden bigger and the Veggie garden smaller. Right now they are about a quarter acre total, and the asparagus is about 3/5ths of it.

What would happen if I put my 2 broodies in a cage together with some eggs to sit on, separated from the flock?

Would they fight or share or hang out together?

Quote: JJ..... yes the roots are deep...when you add new roots do you plant deep and add soil as the grow...then eventually getting back to the original grade?

I should have read all the posts 1st.... All of RBerry's questions and mine above were answered.

JJ..... you don't have to show us just feed us..................come on warm weather

Rberry/// are you selling veggies roadside or at farmers markets or where? New Glarus is getting a real farmers market on Thursdays by the train depot from tomorrow through Fall.. Yeah! But if you have spare veggies...let me know! depending what it is, I or my friends might be interested in buying from you!
I grow my own garden...but have weed issues..and we get a CSA but we are big veggie eaters and I have lots of vegetarian friends...
Hoping I have it all better under control this year to save us money, especially if I am not working.... got one regret on Monday saying I was overqualified... one had a late applicant so going to take longer than figured and one that sounded good, I never heard back from. bummer.
Still working at my old job and from what it sounds like, their interviews are not cream of the crop either. Maybe they will still work with me on things... Let me stay 20 hours and hire me an assistant at 20-30 hours and we will be good! although convincing DH that they are not the spawn of he!! will be interesting. To him there is black and white. They dont want you so they are bad.... he wants me to hate them here... I cant ... after 5 years they are family to me and I understand they are growing and too scared to make this is a shared position. I get it. Not thrilled but I get it. argh...men sometimes....

I guess it depends on the broodies, I have 2 that crammed themselves into one 12"X12" nest box, an Ameraucana and a huge Blue Marans,,,,it worked and now they are co-mothering on the 6 chicks out and about in the coop, hopefully with warmer weather they will get outside in a few days. Both are 1st timers and so far so good

Definitely depends on the broodies. I put 2 together with their chicks in my 3x6 quar pen last spring and they killed half the chicks. They even had their own separate boxes. I don't know if they were fighting over them or attacking each other's babies. If you try it, keep a close close eye on them.

We have a group of Yellow-Rumped Warblers in our yard today!!! I've never seen them here, another species to add to my birding list! I'll try to get a good pic.... they're constantly on the move.

I looked up the warbler, and that is a yellow rump alright. The map says you are on the migration path, so he's just passing through.

as for the broodies, One is a splash Cochin and the other is a Cukoo Marans. Maybe everyone gets their own place to hatch eggs.
