Some great news to share...first and most important, all chick are out of the house! For the moment, no heat for anyone, but as it gets cooler I have to put it back on for the lav orps as they aren't fully feathered.Second item to mention is that the landlords mortgage company accepted our offer on our house. We will be filling out an application next week. Rates have just dropped to an all time low so we should be saving a lot of money on our loan!!!!

congratulations. My chicks are almost ready to go outside. They are getting big and feathering out, can't wait to get the basement bathroom back and to clean it, they are so dusty. I need to plant their run, I figure, keep part of it fenced off for a month or so to get it reestablished. probably wasting my time but my last chickens killed every bit of plant life.

Morning everyone !!!

Wow what a noisy night up here!!!! Went out to check things this morning and I have rhubarb and chives!

LMILLER- hi!! We had a sand point for years then went to deep well. Glad we did as we were concerned about contamination from a near by potato field but I have to admit the sand point had better tasting water. BTW love the coop but must agree on the the door opening in thing, definitely a squish potential there

CS- Wow!!! Super congrats!!!!!

Too tired this morning to chat more till I've had another cuppa!!! Worked way too hard yesterday getting the greenhouse ready to be moved. I was a lot younger when I put all those blocks in the floor and walkway!!! I better recoup pretty fast because we will probably move the thing today.

Kristi - Sorry no clue , I have 4 polish that I have no clue on as well.

JJ - I read about bale gardening in a self sustaining book once. Now that your brought it up I should look into it again, my property is 95% sand 5% soot (A forest fire whiped everything out back in the 50's or 60's and the burnt stuff is still in the sand). I've always had a hard time growing stuff here. The bales may fix that

Judge - I have a sand point as well, its a shallow well driven into sand (less than 25' ft deep) where the water table is high. Ours is only 14'ft deep and the water is cleaner than bottled water We are low lying and have all sand, you'd think we lived at the beach. Heck we made the kids a sandbox and they were digging to see how deep they can go, at about 3 ft down they hit water.

Vivki - I'm jelous, I miss my moms ruhbarb. Some day I will have rhubarb and strawberries

Ok so I asked over on the duck threads but I want to ask here too. I have a feeling the one person who responded to my post spoils her flock sooo..... I have a mallard hen sitting on about 15ish eggs in a branch brush pile. I think she's about a week or 2 in since I dont know when she first started. Its going to be 30's for the next 2 night. Will she and the eggs be ok outside? I have a large dog crate (the plastic kind with the metal gate). Should I move her or just leave her ? I dont want to mess with her if it will hurt the eggs but I dont want her or the eggs to freeze.
Also I have 4 week old chicks outside in their own coop, they havnt had a heat lamp in at least two weeks. Should I give them some heat for the next couple night ?

love hearing about different gardening techniques. JJ there is a farm that is not horribly far from you (Or those in belleville area) call Carrendale Farms ...maybe oregon area??? Anyway, they are trying different techniques and different fruits for success. went to a talk they gave last year and it is really interesting. 100 years ago there were different fruits and veggies that mostly were removed or died out that they are trying to get back. I know one plant is the aronia berry. But they also do some bale gardening and have an awesome strawberry patch for kids and adults alike.
Please keep us updated on your success. Well my greenhouse is set up, now to move stuff out there. Spent alot of time last night on rummage stuff for my friends waunakee rummage next weekend. came up on me too quick.
hopeing to get outside and get some veggies(spinach and radish) in the garden before the rain. But we have soccer tonight and kids have swimming tomorrow after school. getting into that busy season.
Delisha..you might be right. Your three week looks like my 6 week old rock. But..there are small red wattles there...woudl a pullet mature that early? Pretty certain my smaller one is a pullet.
JJ that olive egger is gorgeous we got from you. Pea comb makes me hope the eggs match! of the 7 original hatchers we have left, my only uncertaintly is the big white rock, and the 2 polish. All posted yesterday. Most everyone I talk to, seems to think the polish are both roos. sigh oh well.
Apyl..post pics of your polish too..would like to compare notes. How old are they?

Good morning apyl I have a broody chicken that I recently moved. It went very well. She was happy to just sit on her new eggs. It was from a nest box to a new nestbox on the floor inside of a pen.

Interested in the straw bale gardening! I don't like the door opening in either, but it can't be changed. The building was existing and the doorway isn't remotely square so the door that is there, is the door that had to stay just with a new skin. I already critiqued that to the hubby. He said "be careful".

Judge, Apyl explained the sand point perfectly. It is a sandpoint driven into ground water with a jet pump. Delicious water, but the sandpoint has been in for a long time and even though they cleared it the best they could with acid and compressed air, it still isn't drawing really well anymore.

You all are right I am going to need more room. The coop is 10'x12x8 high" I think?? I am selling off more of the hatchery chicks to make room for some nicer ones but keeping the buff orphingtons to go with a fancy bred buff rooster I am getting to go with them. I also got two barnvelder hens in the hatchery mix that I am keeping.

One chick out of the shell this morning!! I'm a mother! There are a couple more rockers out of the 7 eggs, but I wasn't really sure about a few of the refrigerator eggs. We shall see I guess.



Got way behind on the garden this year. Had grand plans though... May have to buy a lot of started plants now
