Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

the BR roo made a half hearted attack at me today.. but I stood my ground and tried to grab him by the neck.. then it was me chasing him around the pen a bit .. after that he crowed a lot, but no more attacks.. I am getting only 3 eggs per day from his 4 hens.. I have to add a couple more hens soon, prolly tomorrow.. I want 6 eggs per day from his girls.. so then I can set 18 to 24 eggs per rotation about every 4 days..

OK, that's funny, Jim, because the hubs did the same thing today. I wasn't there to see it, though, as I had to run home for some tools. He said he chased him around the yard for a long time and poor Danny didn't know what to do about it. There were a few feathers scattered about but when I asked him how that happened the hubs said, "That's between him and me. I guarantee he won't go after me again." Danny still gives him the stink eye but he doesn't get very close to him now at all.

My chicks keep eating the feathers off the marans chicks legs. Poor chicks are constantly running from feather eaters. I think I have to split my dang chicks up. I had that with the silkie and cochin chicks too. It is funny that they have any feathers on them at all.

I have to cancel the cookout this weekend..My fil is still having some medical issues and we rather not be tied up. Sorry for the last minute cancellation everyone.

Deli-I am sorry that your FIL is still not doing well. I thought the cook out was supposed to be on the 18th of May? If that works for you let us know and thanks for the comments on my babies!

(LavOrps) I introduced the Lavs to the rest of the family tonight, they seemed to do well so I left the pop door open between the grow-out area and the older birds. I got a hunch a bit ago to check on them...good thing I did one of them was stuck in the bottom and couldn't find out how to get back up and was causing a ruckus! There are a bunch of roos in that group, maybe that's why they are crazy??? At least half are definite roos, I know at least one is a girl, but there are 2 that I am unsure about.

(BLRW) The two dotties that have cross beak are eating well they just look funny (and have great personalities). I am hoping that one or both are pullets and can thrive into adulthood. The roo in the BLR group (named "Red") no longer charges or pumps himself up after our battle of...um...grip! He let me pick him up and pet him without even a sound.

(Amer) The ameracaunas are winning over my heart! The black one is named "Lil" and the blue one is unnamed so far. They are getting their tufts and look so cute!

(BlkOrps) These 3 ladies are not top birds in the pecking order which surprised me seeing that they tormented the blrw&amer babies. They are the last on the roost and try to push their way onto the top rung, but not all of them get there! They are getting used to me and I held one of them today for a while. The other 2 still scurry around me when they have to get close. When I get some meal worms that will change!

Glad to hear that some users have come back and really sorry to have seen a few go!

Sorry to hear about the kitty Mel!

I'm loving the chick pics. LMiller, what kind of camera do you use? Your pics are really nice!

Another exhausting but productive day! We pulled out fence posts and started on one of the raised veggie beds. Cut back a few trees from the silo and barn yard and planted a flower bed, too. I'm sore all over - it would be worse, though, if I wasn't operating the tractor when the fence posts were being chained. Driving a tractor is like riding a bicycle - you can be away from it for a long time and it all comes back to you as soon as you sit in the seat.

Tomorrow (after a visit with the dentist) it's more tree cutting, fence work on the chicken run and maybe some power washing in preparation for painting the barn. If anyone is looking for some excitement, c'mon over! I'll keep you busy enough!!

G'nite all you Cheesehead Chicken People of Wisconsin!

hey all..........
Welcome back DR.HAHA..... good to see you
Jim That little roo is awful naughty.... thee little SLW I got from you is a sweety, he dances for me, but has shown no aggression, when I was carrying them all out to the Mobil coop he was better than the little girl I got from you she is a bit flighty and 1 night sneaked out while I was changing birds around, so had to get the landing net in the dark.......... silly hen would a been fox or coyote food had I not been able to catch her...... love the pictures you been posting....still have heard nothing about our Sandhill order that was suppose to be here April 4 or so........... haven't seen CassieD lately either she must be building the new addition..... will most likely come up for a visit if next weekend is as nice for bike riding as this weekend was......... Adam and I had a wonderful ride together Sunday afternoon.....we had a nice weekend together too bad it always seems so short, he rolled out at 11 m Sunday night for Homer Mich.

BigZ glad the project birds are doing well ...are you planning to sell some later this year or next?

Happy belated Judge.......and hope your little one is doing well...scary that must have been........... ouch poor little one.......

Did I miss a sick kitty or skip a page or something? whats wrong with the orange cat?

Sorry about The FIL Delish.......... hope he gets better soon.........

:welcome to our 2 newbies.......... pull up a chair and join right in...........

Well not a whole lot new here I did loose the pullet chick that would not hatch, she just would not eat............... the little boy seems to be doing well go figure, he eats and drinks pretty good now, he is in a sling hanging in his little box in my room, he is not a happy camper about being stung up............ not sure what to do about his leg not only does he have splay leg the joint is not right and it is stiff and unmovable in that leg and his wing also appears to be screwy because he has been laying on it, the reason he went into the sling.......... I really don't need another hobbles around here, but he came this far I can't kill a fighter........... and he has struggled for a week now to just stay alive...... I will post some pictures tomorrow of him and whats left of my hatch, 5 sold the others and have some orders for more eggs and some SLW tchicks, that won't be set till after the batch of EE's is done....that I will have hatch just b4 the bash....... so anyone want some speak up b4 so I bring them along

Now a question on my bator, I never had one b4 that you could set eggs up right in a turner, what way are they suppose to be in there> pointy side up or down? my old bator they just layed on there side and I hand turned them 3 times a day........ so alittle confused on what way is best.........
So I guess thats it peeps, I should put myself to bed have to run the boy to school early tomorrow he has a big test for graduation tomorrow......... Nighty all.......Kim

Only a few pics came out OK, I'll try again tomorrow. 10/10 hatched!

My little mutts!

The little black one has white wing tips!

There is only 1 little yellow chipmunk one.... but it sure is cute! I figured since I was only going to get mutts anyway I might as well make it a good mix.... looks like that's what I got!

I know I should have shavings in the box, but the other chickens dumped the straw on top of the shavings while she was brooding and I just left it. I think with mom in there they should be OK.

Hi All!

erlibrd.... Sorry no one is claiming your roo! I think most of us here are over roo-ed as it is. Hope Leo finds a home!

DrH...Aren't you gettin' all fancy with your brand new carpet! Storky had her hatch of 10! But I have 3 other that want to brood and 2 turkeys brooding! Thank goodness one gave up when she was pushed out by others wanting to lay there. LOL maybe it was the turkey, the 3 rd turkey likes that spot! Maybe you are "sharing" that cat. Had one that would stay at our place a few days the disappear for a few days, then be back. My mom put a note on him and found out he "belonged" on the other side of the hill. It went on like that for about 2 years. Have no idea why he stopped coming.

Jim.... WOW.... that's the SMALL one! When you look at a bird like that you got to be in awe of nature's wonders. To think, that sleek hollow boned bird can not only spread out it's tail to 6 times or more it's size, but can balance it well enough to strut around without falling over!

TO.... congrats on you son getting a job!

kj.... sorry about the snow..... it will go away.... someday!

Judge.... Nice to see your birds, that EE looks like it's going to be a cool looking hen (to me). Colt is looking very handsome! Looks like he got lighter in color. As long as there isn't scaring the little one should get feathers back.

BigZ... As long as Suzie says it's OK, I'll be happy to have your tongue!

CS.... That sure is an interesting chicken in the 3rd pic.! What breed would that be?

BBP.... Yea, good thing your daughter was out there! Your going to have to keep the girls locked up and watched! If that fox knows they are there you can be sure it'll be back! Sorry about the chick.

Delish.... Yea, I thought it was the 18th too! If you still plan on canceling (and I don't blame you) I can come get my 4 anytime but this Thur. or Fri. All the best for your FIL!

Irish.... I thought the animals should have been gummies... but guess the kids didn't think of that.

GR,,, too bad about the chick. Cool you got some time with DH! They think the kitty got hit by a car and lost a leg.
Well, broody camp is still in full swing! But as I mentioned I think 1 of the 4 MAY have quit! Either that, or she's waiting for more eggs.
th.gif
This time of year it's REAL hard to break a broody so I might give the 3 eggs each and let them be. I'll just mark the eggs and hope for the best. I realized I forgot to get chick feed and before today was broke, so I MUST get feed today! The chicks got turkey crumble (the last dust in the bag) and dog food and layer pellets put through the coffee grinder for now. The turkeys got layer pellets and the chickens got 1/2 rations. Yep, a trip to the mill is in order or there will be a riot!!

BTW.... A couple of weeks ago I brought eggs to the new neighbors but the didn't have a stove yet. Well, this week "she" was out of town and they got the stove. So, "he" and his mom tried the eggs..... they ate the whole dozen! LOL They brought the basket over and said that the eggs were so good and they felt so bad "she" didn't get any they would like some more! Very cool since I have some fence hoppers! But they don't mind the chickens over there, and since they like the eggs, all is good!

Guess that's it.... Night All!
