Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

JVLS: I meant to say something with that last post I made, but guess I forgot to. At any rate, I would be highly interested in those sebby's. Can you tell me more about them, please? I've considered putting a pond in the yard, but that would have to wait until the end of summer, so is a kiddie pool okay in the meantime? Do they tend to stick around or should I keep them in an enclosed area? How worried should I be about preditors? I've heard geese are actually GOOD to keep with your flock of chickens b/c they scare the preditors off. Is this true? Also - when you say trio, I'm naturally assuming you have 1 male and 2 females. Correct? Are the females laying? Are you getting fertile eggs? I wouldn't mind hatching out a few here and there. And of course...are they friendly? I've had geese chase after my kids aggressively before and just want to make sure. Anything else you can tell me about them? And last - where do you live and are you coming to the bash at the end of the month?

good morning,, nice and crisp outside.. I don't think the hoses froze..

yes, Psycho, it is not so much that those two women have such diseased birds,, they just are not the friendliest pair ..

and about disease.. anybody chickens can bring a strain of illness to any flock, or a new chicken can pick up an illness from your own flock.. it is not that you have a bad flock, it is just that the new chicken is not immune to what your flock has and vice versa ,,

usually it appears as a respiratory ailment.. usually not fatal, but takes a little time to clear up..

sort of like us poor adults going to a grade school Christmas program and coming home with the sniffles.. D@m kids !!

I think today will be a nice day to take the carb off the post digger and work on it at the kitchen table.. too cold to do anything outside.. I already fed most of the birds.. just have to go throw some feed at the guineas' and peacocks' pens..

to answer someone,, I forgot who asked, and I am not about to go back to find the post..
It took two years to accumulate 10 buckets of manure.. last summer was used up in overhauling my tractor, so I didn't have time to clean out the coops.. nor did I have a tractor to haul it.. we took 8 buckets out of the chicken coop.. it is 10 x 16 feet .. and was easily a foot deep..from now on, I should be able to keep on top of that chore .. I have concrete floors in those two coops, so in the winter I like to keep a deep amount of bedding to insulate the birds from the cold drawn in by the concrete,,

now if anybody would care to visit me,, now would be the time to do it.. I am not currently ashamed of how my coops look.. (just don't look inside my garage) eh Dan?

happy mother's day .. we were very fortunate to have our Mom for 76 years,, (70 for me) .. this is our first year as orphans,, I think I will give my youngest sister a call and get her crying..

Happy Mothers day to those with kids, four legged furry ones or feathered babies! Had to laugh... we went to breakfast in town and the kids wouldnt eat their eggs...they love eggs... when asked, it was because it did not taste as good as our eggs..these were funny to them. Love that they are already trained!!

my weekly updates of pics of my now 7 week old teenagers!
Here are those rocks from Deli...still thinking pullet and yes I am going to keep asking... the buff colored one is probably going to my girlfriend and her new coop as she has alot of roos mixed in and is probably going to keep one of the rock roos because they are so nice.

then Willow our Olive egger from JJ... she is really sweet and I think she is a she. Hoping for those great olive eggs.

Psycho, you are just like Annie,, she always asks me two questions at a time.. usually one is a YES and the other is a NO.. I keep telling her to ask one at a time..

My sebs are 1 gander and 2 females.. they do not chase anybody.. they are quite tame, but very shy.. meaning, you can walk right close to them , but do not attempt to touch them for they will move away.. they are very quiet.. unlike Africans, who seem to have their vocal cords connected to their feet and whenever they walk,, they talk..

I think they are finished laying for this spring.. they usually have a spurt of egg laying around Thanksgiving.. they themselves were hatched on Christmas Day..

I have a black plastic mud mixing boat purchased from Menard's for them to "swim" in,, although they are not nutsy about water like ducks are..

their wings are not meant for flying.. If you feed them daily, they will hang around the feed and water.. they will wander off and graze, but mine have never left the yard.. a 2 ft high fence would probably contain them..

It is a fallacy that geese are protectors of a flock.. (just as false as roosters protecting their hens) foxes consider them a delicacy .. A large flock of noisy geese will deter most predators.. but don't take that to the bank.. a stray can still be picked off from around the edges or off of a nest.. If the pred doesn't kill the goose, it will at least take her eggs.. raccoons are notorious for this..

all of my geese are trained to go into a coop every night.. I have 12 assorted geese at the moment.. that is not large enough of a flock to keep preds away..

I have not lost a goose to a pred for over 30 years..

And, I live near Wausau.. and where are You ?
