Yes she can. She is in one of the transition coops that I use for chicks so she can also see all the other chickens too. And one of the young roos was pacing in front of her coop and she was going nuts!! It was like he was mad that he couldn't get her...

Just a thought here but maybe you could have put the eggs under her first for a while then moved her and the eggs. After she "bonded" with the eggs..... Maybe even kept her where she was broody with the eggs and moved her to a secluded area closer to lockdown ??? Never did it just brainstorming.
That would have been a good idea. She has been broody for about aweek. I had just been taking her eggs away until today.

Wow, that's good news that in the last 5 years they've made progress like that !!! I sure hope they find a cure vs just a control.....Cancer sucks... Plain and Simple !!

I've heard of the pleural and pericardial effusion but don't know exactly what that means. I'll have to look it up. The heart seems like such a simple beast but it sure can get complicated !!!

If she settles down and starts clucking,, give her whatever eggs you want her to hatch.. give her one, first.. do not stick it under her.. lay it next to her.. she will know it is there.. usually within a few minutes, she will raise up and roll it under her.. at that point you can set all the eggs around her and let her pull them under..

I would mark all the eggs with pencil so that you can remove any later volunteer eggs..

One of my new chicks has some weird thing going on with one of its legs it is twisted to the side and kind of twitches when it tries to move? I have a band aide on it like the spraddle legs thread suggests. It seems kind of sleepy all the time. Any suggestions? If its not better soon I will cull but I'd like to give the little guy a shot!

ugh..if it is just a pet you can try to help. Sometimes a bit of extra vitamines can assist too

Terri, by mules you mean sterile. Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Will hens lay eggs though? I was just letting this Scovie girl do her thing.

she will hatch ou when the eggs are ready. Since she is scovy you would think it would be to the scovy clock...35, However the animal kingdom is unpredictable.

Good Advice Jim.... I was typing and spell checking while you were posting. I was just suggesting to move her because she said she had chicks pecked to death. Don't know who did it or why. Maybe keep other birds away from her close to lockdown then ?
Isn't it the cutest thing when a hen pulls those eggs under her wings ?? I love to watch that.

You are right, all hens are different !!! Just like people, some are good mothers, some aren't !! lol

What kind of chicken and what kind of eggs are you letting her hatch?

Joe and I spent the day at Heathers. She has put a lot of work in her new coop. I was delighted to see the birds I bred looking happy and healthy. They were outside in the fresh sunshine pigging out on Fermented Feed. They look and feel nice and fat.

We grilled out and had a really nice shared meal. I so enjoyed her children. They are entertainers and so want to help. She sure has raised some really nice young boys. One of her boys( i do not remember since she has so many)was helping me clean out cages. He worked and work and was so proud of how hard he was working to help. What a wonderful child. I tried to stuff him in my pocket ..but heather would not let me.

I just took a five minute break.. I moved a bunch of babies from the hatcher into two chick tv's..

2 barrocks, and 22 guineas..

I lock down with 3 days to go.. then I let the eggs go for 5 or 6 days.. that takes care of any early birds and also the late ones..

I write the date of lockdown on the eggs.. no confusion or calculating when it is time..

Ok all of you gardeners....... MRs Lazy Dazy here wants to know.....

Ok, I know nice rich composted soil is the best thing for a garden. We added that last year and ended up not planting.

Anyway, ET and I both planted tomatoes, cabbage and peppers....... I'd like to get suggestions on what to use to really give MINE a boost !!!! I wanna show him that I have a greener thumb...... I want his to thrive of course but would be nice to see what I can do......

Any ideas as to what fertilizer to use...... organic? Chicken $hit, Horse $hit? Donkey $hit? Pot Belly Pig $hit? Duck $hit? Goat $hit? and the list goes on !!!

I know not fresh $hit of any kind, too bad I have litterally TONS of it around here.

Oh and also, the cilantro that I bought at Fleet Farm I planted is doing good. I seperated the clumps into single plants. All look good. Then I forgot I had bought three more pots of it and was going to divide it again but plant a few plants in each hole. ET thought he was being nice and planted all three for me, in seperate holes but planted each clump as they came.
What does everyone else do? Never grew the stuff.
