Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning Everyone! WCc good luck with your chick hope it's leg comes around! Annarie and BL4 I know we would get along! We're dogs of a feather you know. Their just more hyper than me. But very smart and trainable. Unlike me. Bob has that niche filled at the moment and think it would be detrimental to his psyche. Don't know what's going to get done today. Depends on the weather.

I love the Chicken TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WIChookchick - Love that group of Silkies! So striking, with the Blue, Buff, White, and Black! They're gorgeous. I don't know what to tell you about the Frizzle with the bum leg though.

I have another sick chicken. I think the problem I'm having is, I brought home all these beautiful SQ Cochins that were raised on wire their whole lives, and I have them running on dirt and grass all day now. Their bodies have absolutely NO resistance to anything in the soil around here. They're getting sick, and passing it on to the other birds. That's my theory at least.

Anyways - it's my favorite Blue Mottled Cochin hen, "Heidi" - my little "egg machine".

I noticed she was a little "off" yesterday morning, I figured it was the weather change...it got pretty chilly here pretty quickly...but by the time I fed them last night she was huddled inside the coop, feathers ruffled and all lethargic-looking - she was having trouble keeping her eyes open. First thing I noticed when I picked her up was that she had a good clump of poo stuck on her fluffy rear end (perfectly normal poo though - I think it was just matted to her because she sat in that same place all day and didn't move away from it), so I brought her inside, gave her a bath, held her in a towel until she was dry (it took a good hour, and she just slept in my arms most of that time), and I dusted her for mites. I got a little poly-vi-sol down her, but I really didn't think she was going to make it through the night.

But she did. She was up and about this morning and drank a bunch of electrolyte-water - although, she still barely opened her eyes. Then, her breathing got really labored and she went back to sitting in a hunched position and sleeping. Crop was empty, her vent looked fine and I couldn't feel and egg bound up in her. I wasn't sure WHAT to treat her with - I was going back and forth between Agrimycin (chemically the same thing as Duramycin) OR Corrid, couldn't decide which one to use....I eventually decided to try Sulfadimethoxine instead (treats Coccidiosis, but covers a few other bases like Fowl Cholera and Infectious Coryza too). Gave that to her around lunchtime (figuring out the dosage was a %*$# - what if I don't want to mix up 50 gallons all at once?!), and she's awake and ate some mashed food, then got bored with the mash and is eating solid crumbles as I type this! He breathing sounds much better...I think I chose the right med, thank goodness!

Heidi is too special to lose. Now I'm just waiting to see some poo come out of her - she produced a tiny little bit of green and white stuff overnight, but nothing since...I'm going to worry until I see more come out of that end. She has one eye squinted open, and the other eye is shut tight...I opened it up and put some sterile eye-drops in it, but the eye looks clear, I can't see an injury or and sign of irritation...

Dr H - LOVE the chicken TV! And those are some good-looking chickens you're watching!

Oh! And remember those three new Call ducklings from AlpineRanch? Voice-sexed them last night: 2 for-sure girls, and I think the third one's a girl too, but she's too freaking calm - I can't get her to make enough noise to really tell! It doesn't matter - I just really wanted the Pastel and one of the Splashes to be girls, and they are!

Good Morning Everyone! Nice cool start to the day. Started a small fire in the stove this morning. The chickens are starting to accept the fact that their not getting out now. Well except for one.

The Wyandotte's are 4 mo's 9 days old think they ought to be laying very soon. I moved the glass eggs into different nests in hopes that will inspire them. I know it's a bit early but what the hey. Getting back in the woods this morning then the Pack at noon and drag racing at 6. Picked ALL the peppers yesterday and got those taken care of and am stringing the cayennes this morning for drying. Will put them in the dehydrator if it gets too cold for them to dry naturally. L's making a new spicy pork recipe today hope it turns out. I love it! Better get back to it. Have a good one!

Too funny that chicken TV! All you need is a TERRIer watching it Doc!
Good rainy (here) morning! I am actually in my winter bathrobe! It is chilly and the rain finally got to my place! We had some nice T-storms the other early morning--put me right back to sleep!
Annarie--glad you found your cochin with her prize! Are you going to lock her up now so she knows where to lay? That medicine that you said you used...is it Sulmet? I think it is the one that I used a lot with mine.
Got some eggs in the cooker for soft boiled...MMMM--although your French Toast sounds delish too BL4! I guess I am just really hungry this morning.
Sad news...my little baby finch came out of the nest yesterday while I was in Milwaukee and it was all pecked up and dead when I got home!

I was so hoping for it to make it 'cause it was the only one in the clutch that hatched! I dont know if the other finches killed it or if the Button Quail pecked it. I guess it really doesnt matter at this point! Hopefully they will make another clutch--I had thought they were too old.
My parrots are sitting cuddled up next to each other--I think they want it to be hot again! That breeze coming in is pretty chilly today.
Talked with my friend last night and the calf is not born yet...neither are my puppies...I believe that everything will be born on the same day! That is usually how it works. We are watching her closely because I guess Jerseys have trouble with milk fever. (great!)
Eggs are done! Gotta run--Terri O

Mmmm french toast! Have yet to make some with the home made bread. TO So sorry to hear about the baby! Hope your calf works out! Are you going raise it? Food, milk, or both? Got the big tree drug out and cut up then fixed the problem with the water softener. Now for L's nacho's, Packers, and some beer.

I have had issues sleeping the last several days.. I tired to go to bed at midnight last night.. took stuff to help.. it didn't help... took a warm bath, watched a boring movie...
I finally dozed off at 4:30.. and got up at 7:30 to go feed horses.. then back to bed around 9 till 12:30 today.. BLEH!!!

I found 2 large salamanders at the horse place I feed/train at, they are going to the wild area's in the ravine in the hay field where my chickens are!

Carol

Oh I LOVE salamanders!!!! Were they black with blue spots or black with big yelloish markings on them?

Dr. H the French Toast was delish! I even had leftovers since my oldest DS was at a sleepover.

The quackers are as fun to watch as ever...... little devils need some wings clipped again. I think they miss us during the day, they quack like mad when we return!

I have one lone black swallowtail butterfly chrysalis left; I am hoping it hatches out soon so I don't have to baby-sit the darn thing all winter!

It feels really weird to say I have a job....... and yet I do not start until the second week of October...... I suppose I can count this as my vacation time.

Have a good night everyone!
