Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ok Flockmaster Et Al... I will take pics tomorrow for the final diagnosis. I'll be happier knowing he didn't break it. But if he did, he did. Or she. I don't don't know! ;)

Just back from fishing/boat ride on Leech lake and saw a gorgeous sunset (other than nasty worms and leeches)!!!!!

BBP: Thanks again for letting them out. And the story about the roo/turkey is hilarious! That reminds me-the friend of yours that I gave the dozen fertile mixed eggs-has she said anything more about what she got from them? How far away does she live? I would love to see what she got out of them....

good evening all... I'm back, I know it's been a while, I missed you! lol I was going thru 'cheesehead' withdrawals. It's been crazy busy here, and I couldn't keep up with reading (I had 300+ unread posts, which technically isn't that bad since some are dups!) lol, anyway
I only went back 8 pages to catch up on, don't remember too much.
funny 'turkey'!
Heather, I hope the wing is an easy fix! :( and the dog too! yikes!

So, I have questions on respiratory stuff.... and am a little confused on diseases. I haven't looked at a chart or anything that describes things, I've just been trying to read about sneezing online tonight and am not getting too much out of it. I don't know where to look or who to ask for help, so my "chicken friends" are who I'm turning to, naturally! My chicks are now 5wks and 8wks old (or 6/9, i don't have my calendar and don't remember.)anyway,
I don't know if anyone remembers, but a week ago or so, I'd mentioned that I had a couple of the younger chicks sneezing once in a while. It didn't seem to be changing at all until TONIGHT. I went in to check on them before dark (745 ish) and nearly everyone (I didn't notice my 2 older girls doing any) is sneezing and has a runny nose. I din't pick up everyone, but checked out 5 of the 12 and didn't see anything else going on. it's clear drainage, no wheezing or coughing or anything else.poops are all normal. they've been eating/drinking fine til today, tho I didn't eat much today either from the heat. I gave them Sav-a-chick today in their water since it's been so warm. I actually shooed them out of the coop this afternoon as I found they were all in there panting and with spread wings (it was hotter in there than out in the shade with the breeze). I couldn't believe they were in there. I didn't know what else to do for them.
So, I"m wondering, where do the chickens get the diseases from? Is it from the hatchery? In nature? Is it allergies or a cold and it'll just go away in a weeks or so? Do I have to find a vet for them? Do I ask/trust someone at FF to help me?
should I clear out the coop and bleach it? I was thinking I should change the bedding tomorrow to see if that hellps, but if they're allergic to it, I wouldn't be doing any good anyway. (straw/wood shavings/dry grass clippings) How do I figure this out? who do I go to for testing if I need that?

Any help/advice is much appreciated!

No testing. Uri ( upper respiratory infection) most likely. The lovely folks on here know what to do. It's not allergies. Tylan is what they told me. They have it at farm and fleet. Injectable or as Amyable does it is draw it up into syringe, then take needle off and squirt into chickens mouth. Dosages on chicks? Dosages on adults? No clue. Watch for good responses tomorrow! Good luck!

Hi All!

FT...Yep, with FF you got to leave 1/4 to 1/3 "head room" in your bucket. I only had it bubble over once. There was just a little more feed in my dry bucket, so I tried to push it.... fail! LOL

BF4m.... Good luck with the dog! Hope you figure out the wing thing, Off hand, I would say see if you can feel anything out of place along the bone. In any case vet tape.

BBP.... Funny about the "turkey"!

Jim... Sounds like that lady might have a nice goose dinner for Christmas!

Amyb.... Yep, you should get some help here.

Well, the new little hen was nowhere to be found and roost time. She had been going back to her (now useless quarantine cage). Took about 45 min. of looking and found her in the loft with one of the Doms. Guess she's doing good at working her way into the flock. I sure would feel better about it if Young Son hadn't let her out so soon!
Chicks seem OK.
I've been putting Broody hens on the roost after roost time. I also blocked off "the collective" where 2 chicken hens and the turkey hen where. I also had another broody in the other room I put on the roost. I've also been dragging them outside during the day. I feel for them.... but I have enought chicks for this season.
2nd son came over with a nice load of wood, grabbed his brother and went for another load. We'll have to rent a splitter and spend the day splitting soon.

Guess that's it... Night All!

She is actually doing a farm tour through the UW Extension. To show her boarding facility, rotational grazing, orchard, organic.chickens, organic garden and bees. I think its next weekend. We could go there if you want.

As a suggestion: (I am sure many with have different ideas and this is just my opinion)

Your instincts are correct about cleaning out the coop. Do not water inside the coops, unless you have a way to keep the area around it dry as burnt toast. . We have extra high humidity right now and chicks and water with humidity leads to a moldy mess. I would think around your water station you might have mold issues. I just cleaned out my old brooder that has not been used at all for two months and the whole floor was moldy. That was with no water and no chicks or activity at all. It has shaving and grass clippings. Tylan is a good suggestion. I think the shots would work best. If you have to do the powder, it is one teaspoon per qt. of water for 5-7 days. If you can get them in a cage with a raised mesh floor and no bedding during treatment that will help you avoid getting cocci as a secondary issue. Good luck and keep us posted.
