Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh, and those turkeys look AWESOME TO!

I need to get a couple Royal Palm from you next year. I am naming them Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My horses drink from big tanks with heating elements in them every winter. They have no issue with it, but They need to be grounded properly...otherwise they can kill. I am guessing one little shock from the water and they wont touch it again. Heated buckets in the stalls. Water is critical in the winter because of the chilled water and cold temps, horses don't often drink enough of it and get sick.

I love bunnies chickescratch, congrats!!

Cuties,

I tried fodder and I prefer just doing a 3 day growth of sprouts. I am lazy and it is less work and maintenance.
I use feed bags and toss in 4 cups of seeds/grain, soak for 24 hours and lay them on the lid of a tote bucket after draining.
I usually have two bags going and one bag feeding. I just invert the bag and hang it in the coop. They pick off the sprouts.

I use wheat, oats, and if i can find it or have any of mine left over..gmo free corn.
I have also done milo and regular no waste bird seed.

The price of birds is per chick
I am not a big hatchery. The foundation of the birds are imports. It cost thousands of dollars to import a bird.
If you invest thousands of dollars in your foundation stock it make financial sense to charge money for the chicks. They are rare and are not found at regular hatchery's. My prices are less than most places. No matter what I charge for chicks, I will not recoup my investment. It is not a money making business unless you are a larger hatchery, even larger hatchery's have a hard time making a profit. They sell by volume. I have no intentions of volume selling. I do not have the space or the birds.

For local people, pick ups, family, friends etc the price will be different and quantity does not apply. For short shipment in WI this time of year, it will be safe to ship 3 chicks that are a week or so old.

Do you use any particular type of feed bag for sprouting? Have you ever used millet seeds?

Hi All!

BBP.... aww, too bad about the chick.

LM.... I have 3 hens that look pretty pathetic from molt right now, would you like me to send some pics?

BigZ.... May you be blessed with a good hunt!

cs.... congrats on the little girl, hope she fits in well!

Great chicken pics everyone! Even the "shabby" ones looked pretty good! TO, I think those are some of the best shots you've had!! Nice to work with a couple of hams! lol

My spring pullets are starting to lay! I got my first "olive" egg!!! Well, it's an odd color, kinda greenish gold. I have no Marans so I guess that's as dark as I'll get. Now to figure out who laid it!
The Tom's were having one of their squabbles this afternoon. They were avoiding each other just before lockup and only one was on the roost. Looked around for the other one but couldn't find him. Hope found a safe spot for the night.

Guess that's it for tonight.... Night All!

Because echo sleeps right in that rug by the back door. And brownie left "apples" all over there for us!! I guess syd has a new chore every day when we get home :-/

Careful lol, he might start chewing on your house!

If not maybe hell let you get him a little goat. Goats are so cool. Ornery, but cool none the less.

Cind- you should post your molt pictures

TO - This morning as I look back I see at least 3 roosters in your bunch.

Dang horses were out this morning. They have over half a round bale in feeder but I guess the yard looks better to eat. Problem is they have the yard ran sacked. The rabbit cages are all tipped over and a mess. My palomino was the culprit this time it seems as she was leading the troop around. Anyone want rabbits? I have 7 that we are trying to get rid of as it didn't work out as my son planned on raising and selling them. Their are pure Satins, Mini Satin and Netherland Dwarf and Dwarf cross. Nice rabbits, but it's just too much.

Morning everyone!
Wow it's a crispy morning. Everything covered in white and a freezing fog. Very eerie sunrise.

Love all the pics from everyone. Thank you Terri for posting the Aussies. Handsome "daddy" but that is one wonky comb! Momma is pretty! Couldn't tell for sure from the pic but it looks like almost no cushion :thumbsup. Appears she has a fairly clean face too. Unfortunately, after seeing the parents, I'm afraid I just might have two roos after all. The little one is so slow developing I can't be certain yet, but if she turns out to be "he", it will probably mean freezer camp and try again in the spring. Wish I had more room for "extras" but I just don't, not yet anyway, sigh. Going to be really hard after all the time and finances invested and I couldn't help but become attached to it. I did manage to learn a lot through the experience tho so for me that counts for quite a bit. I actually enjoy anything that turns into a learning experience, even if the ending isn't as hoped. I know my personality (look at my career choices) so what made me think I would be able to take a "casual" approach to poultry raising/breeding??

DELISHA- I totally understand the "Greenfire" pricing. It was the same for me when I was breeding top line working German Shepherds. If you truly care about the animals you are breeding and not just in it for the money, and are dedicated to maintaining and/or improving the breed(s) you are working with, it is rarely going to be a money making proposition and an impossible one on a small scale. Something most people will never understand. I think I am about to head down that same road with the Australorps. I was stunned to find out how few quality breeders for them there are in this country. I now have a better understanding what most American hatcheries are doing to the heritage breeds is not unlike what the puppy mills have done to quality breeds of dogs that became popular. Just sad.
