Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have a question for you bantam experts..

what would be a very meaty type of bantam ?

how long does it take for a bantam to become fully grown ?

guineas are dark meat birds.. try them instead of chicken..

.......jiminwisc............

I'm far from an expert but on the heritage thread I frequent one of the most recognized breeder/judges Walt Leonard often mentions his choice for a meat bird esp for a small household is the Bantam Cornish. He has posted pics of the birds and the carcasses at 20 weeks,,,look like they would fill the bill. The challenge would be to find a good line to breed from,,,,

Fish Fry Friday To All.... tonight it's flathead catfish fillets from the Mississippi river. We are baking the huge thick fillets, 4 pieces, prolly 1 lb each and have fresh ho-made coleslaw with smashed potatoes and rye bread from the bakery.

Plans to go down to Camp on Monday afternoon....need to fix a broken belt pulley on the snowblower. It's been quite the time down there with equipment that is prolly as old as me. Down time for fixing and making simple work a chore is unfun for me. I'm more of a party person...

Spring can't come soon enough for me.....brats and kraut...I suppose a brew too!

I just butcher the extra cockerals....works here.

Peace..bigz

I am not looking to breed them,, I am going to eat them,,

I would consider getting a pair or trio or more hens and hatch the eggs,, they don't have to be show quality..

are these hybrids, or would they breed true ..?

the birds I mentioned breed true,,,,they are "pre" Cornish X and are a true bantam

I'll see if I can find a pic or 2 and send,,,,Walt's birds look the part, very stocky, wide leg stance,,,huskey looking, yet they dress out to around 2-3 lbs

where to get good birds? I have no idea in the state,,,,someone that shows birds might find a breeder in the area. Lots of breeders are raising more of the bantams just because of feed prices, plus they take up less space.

Quote: I already looked them up.. they look just like the regular sized cornish..
quite expensive in the chicken catalogs..

makes me think I might just breed a bunch of barred rocks and butcher them at 2 to 3 pounds..
cost = $$ next to nothing $$

or I could get some regular cornish / rocks and butcher them early.. then they would be very young chickens compared to a full grown bantam ..

Teri, I was able to vote :D
Bigz spring sounds good to me!
Kildare, I believe you are near my sis. I think you would be closer to terri's. Were meeting in about a month.maybe a chick pick up then :)
Jim, I am surprised you might go for bantam. You don't seem the type ;)
Bbl4 how's the job hunt? I wish I had the discipline to do something like kick boxing!
The ducky is still with us. He eats and drinks when we hold him near the food. He just has this weird neck thing. Time will tell.
