Jim, I have not read the phrase 'feather ticks' since I read Laura Ingalls' books. You gave me a chuckle.

I do realize that we need warm days and cold nights for sap making (see above post) I was wondering if that nice warm day we had got the trees going a bit.

Sorry about the sickos...... I am happy to be at the stage with kids where they do not get sick very often.

My mom had a feather tick also.. IDK where she got it from,, but it was all worn out.. the zig zag sewing was all gone,, and when we woke up in the morning, all the feathers were collected in one corner of it and all we had on us would be the two layers of cloth .. good thing there were 3 of us boys together to huddle and keep warm,, the choice spot was in the middle of the other two,,

Day eighteen/nineteen today, good thing I am not at home to stare at them, otherwise I'd probably be sitting there all day. I keep looking up how soon they can hatch because I want at least one to hatch early for me to fawn over. I have nothing to do for three days after today so I will drive myself bonkers with the little birds. Here is a pic of them when I set them for day eighteen.

Humidity is such a PITA to keep stable in my incubator. I put paper towel on the bottom and I have a hose running into the incubator so I can fill up the reservoirs. I can splash the water up to saturate the paper towel and that gets the humidity up there at 65-75%. It slowly drops anyway so if it comes up to 75% it isn't for long.

I had to chuckle as well at the tick post. I will admit I skim, looking for really good stuff to read. So from Jim's post I got feather ticks, and 1876. I was going to make a joke about that being his year of birth... But then I thought "poor Jimbo doesn't need such grief so early in the morning. The poor man has no heat in his bedroom and likes to sleep with his brothers for warmth. I'll leave the poor guy alone..." See? I CAN be nice! (And this was when CC would chime in with a rather charming remark)

I can tell you that this forum is most definetly the enabler forum. Since I haven't been hanging out with you nut jobs I have NOT gotten any incubators fired up and have no desire too! Shocking? I know!!

In fact, I'm sort of thinking I'm only letting broodies do the hatching. Then I don't have to screw around with the mess of brooding, or the pain of introducing birds to the flock. Doesn't that just sound easy???

I do finally have some young'uns laying. I'm getting may be 6 a day. But most of them are frozen by the time I get to them. But I was excited to be able to sell eggs for the first time since May!

Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books and the ones on her mother Caroline Quinlan(born in Brookfield, WI where I was born) with my daughter right now, so yes lots of tick blankets!

JJ... sorry for your expressions...mine is only one ended...projectile though...so could cover both if wanted to.

two chicks seem to be doing fine in incubator. One other with little pip but nothing else. the chantecler chick looks like it has a little blood on its beak...hoping it wipes off.

ok off to try to nap while kiddo is in a movie on the other end of the couch

Speaking of nice...the sunshine makes this cold actually bearable. It's really nice not to have to plow any snow this week...things are looking up for the better!

I trimmed some branches off a black walnut tree that were in the way by one of the coops...dang thing was dripping sap. I was a little surprised to see that. The top of the snow cover has a couple inches of ice from the rain. It's painful to try and step through the 3 plus feet of snow...poor wild animals...gonna be a lot of winter kill this year for sure.

I know at least two of you are cleaning up after kids, and one of you is enjoying her new couch ..

I just listed a puppy on Puppy Find.. I had to quickly give him a name, so I called him Bear..

Brent, that bl walnut tree was so tensed up from the cold it was squeezing the juice out..
