Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

rd200, I would go with the barred rocks.. If I was trying to save money, I would not pay $20.oo for a laying hen.. It would take quite a few eggs to get your payback..

If you like chicken soup, go with the red stars.. they will not lay for many years, but you can always get new ones and make soup with the has beens ..

BBP, go get em, tiger !!!
My main regret after a confrontation is why couldn't I have thought of this to say, or that to say.. where are the good zingers when you are in the thick of things ??

I once had a guy come out of his house and start chewing me a new one because I parked my car across the street directly across from his driveway.. I asked him, do you know me ? he said no.. I said , then how do you know that I am not some sort of psycho who would sooner kill you than look at you ? he went right back into his house..

just took the Blazer to the fixit shop.. then went and picked up the tax papers..

negotiating with some people from Rockford about a puppy..

might be going on a road trip tomorrow for another deal.. will tell you about it when I get home..

Thats kind of what I was trying to say to this guy, Jim. It wouldn't be hard for me to find out where he lives since he's been selling chicks out of his home to people. What would even motivate him to call me names like that and threaten to come hurt me? He hung up on me when I called him immature. Fitting.

rd, what part of the state?

With a family of 6 to feed I would not be paying $20.00/hen.

Do you know anyone who raises chickens? Especially only for eggs.

Most of my friends who raise layers....have to many ( its addictive ).

I know if I wanted to do layers ( I can buy cheaper from my friends than I can raising them )
my friends would part with a few of theirs, and I would assume they are not the only ones
who keep to many.

Best of luck on your search & welcome to the site!

Springday Early Evening To Everyone.... Welcome to the cheeseheads rd...hope you can visit often and make our annual bash...check the link on my siggy for more info or pm me.

Tough to hear about that bbp...glad we have the castle doctrine here in the badger state...keep the doors locked and stay safe....mean people need to stay way away...or suffer their loss for being stupid and mean!

Hope everyone is enjoying the better weather....been busy with outside stuff that didn't get done during the extreme cold.....we have a ton of snow here....oh my, the banks by the pole barn doors are gonna be there awhile for sure.

I build all my gates and doors with a 12" snow barrior.....makes the gates work always with a simple flip of the shovel...makes you step through always..but the way to go here in the North. Hinges last a lifetime working free...

Smile, this is as good as it gets....bigz

good springlike evening,
Annie got the leanto door shoveled out and now it is shut.. she failed to tell me about the drop off in front of it.. I should have figured it would be there,, If I would have shoveled it, I would have made a ramp.. at least I didn't fall in the dark.. but I did take a long step down..

I have to get up early (for me) tomorrow.. I have to be in Medford by 8:3o AM..

I should be back home before noon with my surprise.. that reminds me, I have to take my camera along.. I hope I don't forget to..

Welcome rd....I'd have to agree with Jim and state that if you just want eggs, the cheaper route is buying them. But if you want a rewarding hobby, then read lots of books, build a coop, get the equipment and buy some hens. Do be aware that some people will sell adult birds for cheap to newbies, but they aren't laying anymore or at least not frequently. Also, there are illnesses that can be acquired when buying numerous birds from different areas. I'm not trying to discourage you, only trying to make your initial experience rewarding!

DH just saw lightning, maybe we'll get rain instead of snow. Either way I hope we get very little of either.

The college is starting to look like a construction zone. The PODs have arrived, the scaffolding has been erected, the privacy/security fence is up, the labs are mostly empty 3 ft from the East wall, and I've labeled items for disposal. Someone asked me today how everything was looking. My response was "the labs look great, but I can't say the same for all of the offices". The faculty must imagine that someone is moving all of their stuff away from the wall, like a fairy waving their wand. Maybe that's what I need...a magic fairy wand!

Otherwise, the hens have decreased their egg laying as a form of strike. I've removed the heat lamps and they want them back. Has anyone read "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that type"? That is my chickens, on strike to get their heat lamp back.

Hi All! New here, just found this thread. Thought id introduce myself. I'm going to be getting chickens very soon so I'll be around here a lot im thinking!
I'm married, have 4 kids, DS 12 DS 3.5 DS & DD 11months old. I was a SAHM up until 2 weeks ago. Now I work very part-time milking cows every other weekend. It's ok. Would rather be home w/the kiddos though. At least hubby is home w/them when im at work.

I have a Jersey/Guernsey heifer and an Oberhasli Milking goat. She's dry right now but due May1st! I can't wait. Never had baby goats before- So my next project is chickens. We eat probably 4dozen eggs/week sometimes more. Especially with the twins eating table food now, our grocery bill is only going up up up. So I figure its time to get some chickens-

Anyone here have any started pullets they are looking to sell?? I really don't want to wait the 20-24weeks from the start of raising the chicks to get eggs. I'd love to either buy laying hens or started pullets to get some eggs a little sooner.

I did find a lady that has some Barred Rocks for sale. they are 2.5months old. They weren't first on my list, but I think they would be a good start. There are some 4month old pullets on Purepoultry in Fremont,wi that I would like too. Just not sure I want to pay $20/each. But then again, Id start getting eggs in the next month or so, so they may be worth it.
Any suggestions on breeds? I wanted something a little unique but I also need something that's going to be a great layer and pay their way around here. I was thinking maybe a Wyandotte or Delaware? Or I know the Red sex links and other hybrid like that are really good egg layers right??

I'm looking forward to following/participating in this thread!! And hopefully looking forward to Spring.....sometime......if it ever gets here....Gosh Monday was SO nice- now only 20 something as a high tomorrow. Sad....So Sad....
Not sure how far you are from St Paul, but I'm about to sell off a bunch of my year old hens. They are laying like champs, but I'm hatching and need the space. I was going to charge like $15-20 depending on breed. They are all bantams, but I have some that lay eggs that fill out a store large egg carton.

Happy evening to you all! Been lurking as often as the house work and kids allow. :) So very thankful for the warmer weather! I saw my first robin today ~ that always makes for a happy day. F&F is taking orders for chicks now :) i'll be getting Easter eggers and Colombian Wyandotes. Straight run on both..... that was my plan anyway.
Is it just me or is there a trick to getting tender meat from my chickens. (Red Stars) i swear it felt like it was all gristle. He wasn't even a year old. I want to be able to raise chickens for both eggs and meat but every rooster had been tough. :( any thoughts for me.
Sorry to hear of having to deal with jerks and of the losses and other trials.

Welcome rd200!! Wish I could help you stock up your coop - $20 pullets will take quite awhile to pay for themselves in eggs when you add in feed, etc! There are quite a few folks into hatching around here, I'm sure you'll find someone with birds to spare.
