Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

That's a great thing JIM that you know about turkey's raising chicks. That would be a cute sight though! And so great so Bo is starting to come and stay with you when you call him! I totally can't stand people who hurt their animals. Someone should do to them what they so to their animals... Grrrr. Makes me angry.

Yep, had a great warm and sunny day here too. Up to 40 here and lots of puddles for the ducks to dabble in.

And we had a crazy idea, which was a good one that turned out yucky big time! We actually tried to clean out the "winter accommodations" under the topper. Talk about a stinky area! Luckily we layered it with plastic and straw, then another plastic and straw on top since we're not able to clean it out for half the winter. Yikes. The bottom layer is still frozen to the ground so tonight all of them will have to stay in the duck house until we get that topper unfroze from the ground. What a mess!

So obviously we're both stinky, yucky and halfway noxious from the smell of collected goodies from all of them. And once we were done the shower was in high demand!

Enough of this mess. Now all clean and good smelling again we're just gonna rest our backs and noses and enjoy some brownie cake while chillin. Yup, there is still plenty of snow on the ground here. Enough that my Rottweiler sinks down and you can see him only when he lifts his head up! Lol.

So later all, and have a great evening.

turkeys make excellent mothers..  if you are not going to put the chicks into a brooder box, let the turkey have them..

I had a turkey hatch out guinea eggs once..  she had 4 of them,,  kept them in a tight group as if they were turkeys,,   and if you don't know about guinea keets, they are impossible to keep together,,

of course, this will be just another post that will go unheeded ..

What's your deal lately with the comments about nobody reading or heeding your posts? I see more people going out of their way to respond to your posts than anyone elses.

I found that the turkey had crushed the egg by the time I went to lock all of the birds up tonight. It was still alive, so I put it in the incubator with my splay-legged call duck. But I was in such a tizzy I didn't pull the call ducks water dish out. Guess who drowned? :(

So sorry to hear that BBP.

Wish it would have worked out for you...

Yet I do have a somewhat stupid question I guess:
I read all the time about the internal and external piping but somehow I do not get the difference?!? External piping seems to be after they break through to the air sac, but internal piping? How is that supposed to sound like? And about how close to hatching is this supposed to happen? I didn't notice any internal piping so far, but maybe I'm just too impatient and took it as external piping? No clue.. so someone please enlighten a somewhat stupid hatcher for I can get closer to all your levels of knowledge, oh wise people!

Quote: I never heard of internal pipping before coming to byc..

I assume that it is when they break through the air sac .. then if you candle after that time, you will see only dark and no air pocket ..

It must happen shortly before pipping ..

I might be all wrong about this,, I hardly ever candle..

Haven't been here in ages! Popping in to see if there is a new Bash thread and planning underway yet? I see Jim is lamenting about his unread posts again.....

Kids are great, yard is muddy, birds are happy the snow is leaving, and I saw the tiniest tips of rhubarb peeking out today!

External pipping is when the shell is cracked.
Internal pipping is when the chick breaks through the membrane into the air sac, allowing it to begin breathing and cheeping inside the egg prior to pipping the shell. You can see it if you candle and see the air sac and the triangular beak sticking up through the membrane into the air cell.

Thanks you, oh wise one! Lol. Never heard about internal and external before BYC either. Piping yes. But differences? Oh well, learn something new every day...

And here is a lil something I share with u:

Gee, he just came running back from his nightly rounds and just saw yet another bobcat by our pheasant pens! So not nice!! Unfortunately he missed it so we sat up the trap again. We just had an entire family around Christmas here. WTH?!? And we only got one more shotgun shell left, dang it!

What started as an uneventful day certainly ended on a wild note!

Had my BIL's birthday party tonight, Dr. Who themed so we had a Tardis cake. Came home, settled in for the night, and suddenly the dogs are fighting. Of course Fonzie is the big PITA who starts the fights, and poor Trixie is the one who ends up hurt. Tonight he decided she should try for a pierced ear....... of course the absolute WORST place for an injury. I cannot find any of my styptic pencils, and of course every time I would get the bleeding to stop for more than 5 min she would shake her head and get it going again. We ended up wrapping her ear with gauze, crossing her ears on top of her head and used an ace bandage to wrap up the works. Then out came the cone of shame. She was so flummoxed by the cone she forgot about the head shaking. Since it is late and I really do not want to stay up all night checking to see if the bandage is ok, I took it off right before I stopped in here. She seems to be finished with the head shaking thanks to the cone, and is more interested in sleeping. Tomorrow I will be spending the day cleaning all the blood droplets off my kitchen floors, cabinets, counters, and anyplace else she managed to spray with blood.

Amy, there is a Bash thread going, BigZ and Terri have links in their siggys.

I wonder how DrHaHa is doing and if his yard is underwater right now or it is a giant ice skating rink? I am hoping he has a dry basement at the very least.

Too tired....... I need to get some sleep.

Scratch that, the bandage is back on. Even after 1/2 an hour with no shaking, all it took was ONE shake.

good morning,, I have to get outside early and take a picture of the sebastopol geese,, I had a reply in just a couple of hours after I put them on craigslist..
so naturally he wanted pictures, and naturally I don't know where I have them stored, so I will take new ones ..

I should go through and eliminate a ton of pictures..

rather than putting them into folders, you should be able to alphabetize them ..

the guy who emailed about the geese is from Ladysmith.. he has the same last name as some of my mother's cousins.. there has to be a connection, because it is not a real common name..
My mother's aunt walked from Illinois to Three Lakes at around the turn of the century, (1902)
Paddock was her name..

cuppa is just about gone,, and it should be light enough to let the birds loose..
I saw a cottontail rabbit in the driveway this morning.. Puppy must be asleep or he would have been chasing it.. he chases red squirrels,, no contest ..
