Sorry you still have so mch snow bigz! This is the view on break now! Even get to watch a little robin.

I didn't pick up my hatching eggs this weekend and I'm considering having a closed flock. There are too many irresponsible and uninformed people breeding and selling chickens. I'm not going to risk mine getting sick or unknowingly spreading disease. Maybe I'll change my mind, but after hearing other peoples horror stories, I've decided to be happy with what I have.
I am getting 3 turkeys from Welp hatchery on the 17th though. That has been in the works since January.

Hello Fellow Wisconsinites!
I have a question: My chicks are 5 weeks old and quite large, they appear to be fully feathered can I put them in the barn with a heat lamp? I haven't been giving any supplemental heat for a week now but they are in the house. I have a coop but wanted to wait until the are 8 weeks old to introduce them to the ladies. They all healthy and lively, one is sitting in front of my keyboard eagerly awaiting a response lol. Thank you for any information. It is above freezing in the morning and we are no longer using our heated water bowls and it is getting up in the 50's but not everyday.
I have EE, Astrolorps, Red Stars, Black Stars, and a mystery chick.
If you feel it is safe..Personally I do not think heat lamps are safe..at all. Most barn fires are from heat lamps and the chicken dust. If you use one make sure it is triple secure.
Wisconsin weather can change in the blink of an eye. Only you can know if you have an area that would be safe and warm for young chicks. Do not rely on 40 degree weather. It will drop blow freezing at night many more times.
I put my 5 week old chicks outside. I have them in a partial insulated area. It gets cold, but they have been off heat since they feathered out in the house weeks ago.

uote:
Del-momma hen is very content with her clutch of eggs. Since she is in the layer box, I had to root around for the non-fertile eggs to remove. These girls are so patient and do not fuss a bunch.
Well I had to turn the heat off on the sap as I need to get sleep. I guess it'll be okay to restart tomorrow?
My gold ball mom went to the wrong nest also. She still hates those eggs. They were cold when I discovered it. I might have a hen on 7 dead eggs.

I do not know anything about sap..
It didn't help to quarantine when the birds were carriers and showing no signs.
you need to complete the quarantine by adding a canary.

Having a closed flock is not a bad idea..ever.

You can only do so much. Worrying and stressing about what may or may not happen takes away the joy of having chickens. Do not let other peoples stories make your decisions. You are a good chicken mom..You are careful with what you do. You take good care of your chickens. That is all you can do.

Yes, Jim. I've had Turkeys. I'm the one with the crazy hen that went broody and crushed her fully developed chicken eggs. She really needs a Tom. And I definitely am not bringing an adult turkey into my flock.
