Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good afternoon, raining steady, but not hard.. still warmish,,

Neither of my dogs whine when tied..
I know it is hard,, but if you ignore his whining completely, even to not scold him he might stop..
If he gets ANY kind of response, he will continue to do so..

when my dogs bark when somebody comes into the yard, I do not holler at them,, I say, OK that's enough,, and then they each get petted when they shut up.. I have never stopped them from barking during the night.. they are doing their job.. why holler at them ??

Frankie likes to steal Gus's food.. then she gets a good scolding from me,, but Gus will not fight for or over food, so he backs away until she is done ..
neither dog has ever been spanked,, but Frankie lies on her side when I let loose and holler at her about stealing food..

Gus has taken to roaming off the property.. I have him tied up, but I cannot see that as a permanent situation.. I think you have less problems with females roaming,, Frankie stays with Gus while he is tied.. it doesn't work the same if she is tied..

we have a shocking collar, but I am reluctant to use it.. the situation has to be just right for it to be effective ..

as long as I am outside, Gus stays with me,, it is only when I was letting him loose all night that he would take his early morning stroll ..

I am not totally familiar with rules of tying the dogs. Even when I lived in town (until 3years ago) we never tied the dogs. Just did the training to keep them in the yard. I did however do the drag rope. Especially on young dogs. It was always very hard for them when school got out, and when someone came by with a dog.
Your situation is so much different having Theo strictly outdoors. Mine were only allowed out when I was there. Until I knew that no matter what they could be trusted to stay in. I would practice by playing catch and then throwing the balln into the road. If there was an attempt to go I would step on the line. Once I felt they knew not to go I would remove 1' per week. I had only one dog that needed this method. It was my first. I thought it was so neat having a dog. I wS 12. I walked him everywhere on a leash. Then one day wanted. Dog that stayed next to me off the leash. It was a loooong battle. But that drag rope worked after much patients and time.
Is Theo tied baceause he can not be trusted alone with the chickens? I think I remember you saying the yard is fenced.
I do however agree with Jim on ignoring. That is how we crate train the pups. To them any attention is good. We leave them howl as long as it takes. Once they are quite for about 1 min they get praise and release. This might work the same for tying.
I think once they are bonded with humans it is almost impossible to switch back to strictly lgd. But also think a pet/protector is a better situation in town. Your lgd also needs to be socialized to your type of lifestyle.
Set Theo up training sessions to make mistakes. That is what I originally did with Echo. So you create opportunities to make corrections. If he is chasing the chickies hide out of sight. He will eventually forget you are watching and chase. Correct him for any attention he gives to the birds.
Sorry for the rambling! Maybe more specific q's... lol
just mho ;)

To clarify on a few points....Theo does chase after the chickens on and off, I just correct him as we go. But that's not why he's out front. I want him to guard the yard and all it contains (human and animal). As a part of that he has been in the side yard and then I added the backyard and now the front. However the front yard is not fenced where the other two are. I can continue to do the drag leash and shorten it while I'm outside, but I also want his confidence to grow while keeping him in the yard. I do not respond to the whining as I know it would encourage the behavior. I only feel for him as I think he is lonely being alone no chickens or humans. I do think this is part of his maturing process though.

I have not taken him for walks by leaving the yard on foot. Only by getting in the car and driving somewhere to walk. I feel it would confuse him as to what I expect his perimeter to be. What do you think Jim and Cuties? If I should adapt him to the lifestyle of a protective pet I would do that. But you aren't supposed to do it with lgd. I'm conflicted now.

Plenty windy here today with the rain that came down, we lost a lot of the colorful leaves off the Maples...dang it's looking Fallish out today.

We just finished making our second batch of sauerkraut. I love the ho-made kraut compared to store bought stuff.

Hope the wind resides some...I don't like to hunt if it's too windy. I need to put one in the freezer soon....my pile of meat is not a pile anymore. Still have some sausage, steaks, and burger for awhile though.

Have fun....bigz

Oh crappy day.......it's rainy and muddy here! I'm sure that you all are dealing with the same. I had to wear my mud boots to work.

My egg production is up, so I can sell eggs again.

Poor doggies are all muddy.
your eggs look good.
eggs are slowing down here. I have half broody and half molting.
I do not tie cookie so I can't help in that department. She is getting better since I purchased a vibrating training color. It vibrates like a phone. It works great. I agree it is hard to keep him out front with no company. You might need to make a small kennel run for him out back when you are gone. he needs to be with the chickens even if he can't touch them.

I see cs! I did not realise he was out front away from everybody. Yes, then I would feel a bit bad for him too ;) I would think if you just brought Theo to the front on the drag while you are sitting on the porch or working on the flower beds he will think of that as part of the yard. But if the whining is not out of control for you or the neighbors and you would rather have him left up there at times I say go for it.
Cold and wet. The horses are getting their winter coat for sure. The chickies are finally getting their feathers back. But not yet laying well. Most of them are grow outs. So will shortly start to lay. Can't wait! Right now we are getting mostly mg and Sumatra eggs. So boring! Lol
kids are doing greT in school and loving it. I must say I am a bit surprised how well things are going for Blake. I thought for sure I would have my hands full. He seems to be off in lala land whenever we do homework. But somehow is learning it :) this is homecoming week. And they get to dress up. They love it!
