Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Awfully cold out there! My hands are so cold I can no longer feel them.
Chickies are doing pretty good. I do not think I will be trying to hatch these current eggs. Even in the barn and us collecting as soon as we get home I do not think they will be any good.
can't wait to go home get chores done and crank the heat!!
found a great little resteraunt only about 15 min from us. I think we will make it a once a month thj ng to head over there.
have a good one!

Ok so I'm thinking of getting some geese, just 2 would be great. I used to have ducks and LOVED them but their constant mess was annoying and a pain to always be cleaning up. Are geese just as messy? Right now we have some chickens and a trio of turkeys that free range together and then are cooped up at night. We have 18 acres, mostly farm field and some horse pasture - no water around besides a waterway with spring flooding. Any input on geese? Will they be friendly with the other animals and my 2 little kids if they're raised with them? I've seen the buff seem to be more friendly and also Toulouse? Again any suggestions would be great! If we would go ahead with this id love to hatch them from eggs.

Sorry for the graphic pictures, but this is what I found in my run today. This hen had to have been killed by another chicken, right? Like pinned down and pecked to death?! I can't find blood splashed on any of the beaks or chests. So I have no idea who did it. I need to get my poor bantams separated permanently. What goes on around here when I'm not home? I needed her for my lemon blue bantam cochin project that is apparently doomed to fail :(

I can't tell you what killed your chicken,, sorry,,
she might have died and got pecked on afterward.

geese..
I have never had a mean goose.. I had lots of different breeds..
No one breed seemed any different than the other..
Goose eggs are difficult to hatch,, so if you plan on having a trio, get lots of eggs for incubating..
You might do better to get some already hatched..
teach the geese to eat out of your hand.. or at least feed them something like bread pieces as a treat so that they associate you with food.. I found that sitting in a chair on the lawn and dropping the treats close to me makes all species of birds more friendly .. it doesn't take long before they become comfortable enough to take the bread from your hand,,

This is what we were busy with today:

Out with the old

400

In with the new!

Smoked the motor on the dryer the other night, so we had to get some replacements. Found this three and a half year new used set on Craigslist, nice thing is they were only four blocks from my house. Still need to get some hoses and then we can hook them up. Tonight I printed off the manuals so we can educate ourselves on how to use the darn things!

Listen to Jim, he is the Obiwan of the Cheeseheads.

Everyone in this house does their own laundry; the kids were taught what to do starting at the age of 8, by the time they were 10 they did their own. So no laundry complaints here! The only laundry complaint I have is that they need to fold their stuff!

And I salute you once again Mel! I did the same thing in our house...I couldnt stand the "I need this TODAY!" And this was mostly from DH---we all did our own and he still has the largest stack of clothing on the floor. Of course he heads to Costo and frequently buys more underwear cause he cant seem to catch up--TMI??? At least I dont have to listen to it!

The geese will be friendly if you have a trio or a pair I believe. (or more) The only time I had a problem was when I had 2 males and one female; then the odd male decided that I was its mate! Funny stuff around here when Dh tried to come near me in the yard! I have Toulouse geese here now--a flock of about 35. They are laying now but I am collecting eggs so they dont freeze (they are delicious!) I will let them start to set in late March for an April hatch. If you need some goslings I may have some to sell.

I guess I have read and responded to everything that I have seen on the internet...time to stop procrastinating and head out for chores! At least I dont have jury duty in the morning!
Stay warm--TerriO
