Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi, noon,

I got the mower all put together and have most of the lawn mowed,, at least the hay field part is done,..

First chick,, chickens do have a tongue and they can pick up even powdered feed ..

I tried dragging the garden with Ollie.. too wet.. I did roll the compost pile anyway ..

the potatoes did get a touch of that last frost, but they are coming back gangbusters..

they are talking frost for this weekend .. I hope they are wrong ..

Cooties, how much are guineas going for in your neighborhood ?
we had one get hit by a car yesterday.. makes three dead ones from that flock since we got them,

the other, "stupid" flock, stays in the yard..

last night was so warm, I left the patio door open.. that way I would not have to get up at 4am to let Frankie out.. at 6am she barked at my bedroom door.. apparently she couldn't figure out how to walk through an open door..

Smart dog, if she has to get outta bed, so do you. Thanks for the answer on the 2nd question, got an answer for the first.

Ok, 2 questions....I have green worms on my cabbage plants....used sevin dust on them, will that take care of the problem?  #2 I got my first batch of feed from FF, it was a small pellet type of food, my next batch I got from Shawano Feed and it is called egg mash and is super fine.  Is either one ok? I don't know how they can pick up that really fine stuff.

If your chickens find out you took away those juicy cabbage worms you're gonna be in biiig trouble...

Depends on how much money I have.  I have ordered from WillowBend, but, I got this stuff at Walmart.  Don't like shopping there, but, this is Clintonville, no, high end fabric shops for miles around.

I can't see it because when I type the keyboard pops up in front of the reply box :(
nice boots Irish!
jim, I bet those calls ate hiding eggs. Ours do. I have to keep them penned if I want eggs ;)

Quote: I can't answer that,, I never used Savin..
somebody told me that those white butterflies are the ones that lay the eggs..
every time they set down on a plant, they lay an egg..

I don't know if any of that is true or not, but I did watch one of those butterflies land, and it did excrete something,, I assumed it was an egg..

but the size of those butterflies compared to the size of the cabbage worm does not compute in my head as being related..

I finished mowing the grass.. it sure is hot out.. drinking a lemon/lime soda and cooling off before going out to plant the tomatoes..

Quote: I have them in the pen where the guineas were in,, it is barren .. not a blade of anything green. no hiding places ..
Annie walked to the mailbox.. I told her to take a wheelbarrow along and pick up a load of hay for the goats..

I wish I had a dump rake for the tractor.. Irene has a large lawn sweeper.. I should have done her lawn with that.. I could have filled my truck with grass clippings..

I like those clippings for mulch around the plants.. it packs down like a carpet and really hinders the weed growth..

For chicks, I always use the crumble. If you have the pellet, you might want to add some water to it so they can eat it...digest it better.

Jim- the puppies aren't weened yet right?

Yesterday, I planted cauliflower, cabbage, zuks, yellow squash, many types of tomato and peppers, 2 types of basil, & eggplant. The rest of the earlier planted crops are thriving! DH has planted seeds for beans, corn, and melon.

I will be getting ready to chicken stock tonight. kids and I are coming up Friday and Nathan is coming up Saturday afternoon.

Day before the bash to all....yep, the sevin dust will take care of the worms...if it rains though you need reapply....Suzie loves the shoes Irish...she is gonna order a pair. It will be pleasant weather this week end...just wait and see....bbl...gotta go do some grilling.

Sorry, guys, will not be able to make it to the bash after all, maybe next year....that way I will have a whole year to plan for it.

I think Bigz took care of #1 for you. As for the super fine feed, that is a preference thing, for you and your flock. My (adult) girls used to eat crumbles but I thought they wasted too much of it so I switched to pellets years ago. I bought some of the finely ground feed once but they just dug it out of the feeders looking for the solid pieces and then scratched the powder into the ground. So as not to let the feed go to waste, I bought more pellets & mixed the powdered stuff into it, which coated the pellets pretty nicely.

No matter which form you choose to feed your birds (ground, crumble or pellets) they are all ok to feed to your adults, it is strictly a preference thing. I personally prefer pellets.
