Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Jim, I was the area egg seller. A few around here sold for a while but quit and all said it was due to feed prices being too high. I'm heading to the bulk food store today and they have a big flock of production reds so I'll just get a couple dozen there.
Because I don't have any cockerels for the freezer this year I'm going to do a batch of meaties too. If you weigh those pullets when you butcher I'd be interested to know how they compare to males. What have you been feeding? Anything special to finish them?

Thanks Cuties. I think everything happens for a reason so I usually get over stuff like this pretty quick. We are building a new house and not having birds has given me more time to help out with that so it's all good.
Is your Blue Cream the male? If so, depending on the colors of your hens, Blue/Black/Splash are what you should get in a hatch. It all depends on how many copies of the 'blue' gene each chick receives from it's parents.

Cindlady, yup I have some Buff Brahma eggs coming next week (and maybe some Golds) so all I need now are Lights and Darks. Can't believe I'm trying to hatch this late in the season but I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

There was a tornado that touched down in Waupaca County last night as well. Between Big Falls and Marion a few barns were damaged/ destroyed and at least one house had significant damage. Thankfully all the people are ok.

Had a great 4th, wished the weekend was a bit longer, but not much you can do about that.

BigZ, your place ok? No damage at the camp?

Yep, all good here....just missed us on both sides...not sure about Camp yet. We really were hammered with the rain.

Nothing new here....good luck Huntress with the new fresh start!

Robin...my one daughter is moving to Explosion Lake on the Townsend Flowage...don't know how close that is to your place...just sayin.

Be safe ... bigz

We had quite a bit of rain for about 12 minutes here. No tornado, altho, Marion is not that far away. It was all North of us. I think I have a chicken that is trying to psych me out. She CLLLLUUUUKKK, cluck cluck cluck, like she has laid an egg. No egg anywhere.

Good and cool afternoon here.
Sorry Jim and Cuties these buyers give you such a hard time... They must be related to my mother.

Cuties I do think I have lucked out and have only 1 rooster in the bunch of 6 that hatched, they are getting so big and only one has a definite comb and wattles coming. If anyone in the Madison area is interested in BLRW 7 week rooster let me know. Some one on the Madison BY Chickens is looking to adopt some older birds to put with her lone survivor age 6... So hoping I reduce my numbers by 2 or 3 and add these new babies to the flock.

BigZ I think I remember my grandmother had ground cherries and we just ate them plain... Can't remember what they tasted like, but I think they were good, cause I don't remember hating them

Have a great day all talk at ya soon!

good evening,

huntress, I ordered all pullet meaties.. I started them out on starter crumbles and after about two weeks, I switched them to finely ground 50/50 oats and corn,, they took to it right off..

they are free ranging, I don't care if they do not put on weight quickly as if they would if I kept them penned up.. although they are looking nice and chunky now..

the reason I got pullets is because they fit into our freezer bags better with their shorter legs..
I am thinking they will be more tender than the roosters would have been, too..

they were hatched on May 7.. so they are 8 weeks right now.. not full grown, yet..

the oats and corn is about half the cost of the broiler crumbles, and I am thinking that the meat will taste better..

so far no heart attacks or crooked or bowed legs..

I went to Iowa at 6 AM today,, bot back home just as it was getting dark..
I bought a male 3 month old Maremma puppy,,
He really needs a bath and a blow dry,, that might just take place tomorrow..
He was tending a flock of goats and sheep already,,

here he will have to be content with poultry,,

I will post pictures after he is all cleaned up.. I should do a before-and-after picture..

too tired to type any more,, time for a glass of Sangria and then off to bed..

lots to do yet this week.. garden, fix lawn mower, socialize the dogs.. naps ..

.............jiminwisc............

So glad it missed you Bigz. That was some nasty weather.

That was one heck of a road trip Jim. Can't wait to see the new pup.

Not much new here. Sweet dreams all!

Quote: I was thinking the same...that's why I wondered about the weight they will dress out at.
Last time I did meaties (straight run) I kept track of feed costs per pound of dressed meat. I butchered 20 as 'Cornish Hens' at 4 weeks old, then 20 each week at 6,7, and 8 weeks old. The cost per pound dropped each week but the cockerels were storing more fat by week 8 than the pullets were. I'd rather have a leaner bird so maybe buying all pullets is the way to go.
