I was thinking the same...that's why I wondered about the weight they will dress out at.
Last time I did meaties (straight run) I kept track of feed costs per pound of dressed meat. I butchered 20 as 'Cornish Hens' at 4 weeks old, then 20 each week at 6,7, and 8 weeks old. The cost per pound dropped each week but the cockerels were storing more fat by week 8 than the pullets were. I'd rather have a leaner bird so maybe buying all pullets is the way to go.
we are keeping close account of the feed cost, too..
Annie's brother is paying for half.. we are each taking half of the birds..

I might order another batch later on this summer..

I'm sure there is no comparison in weight between the roos and pullets..

Hi all!

I'm wondering if any of you can help me out.

We got 5 hens in February to start our backyard flock. My daughter's turned out to be a roo. I promised her that I would find her another hen to replace the roos but I am having some difficulty finding anyone around me (Portage area) selling hens around a year old. I'd like a really good egg layer, since that is why we wanted to raise chickens.

I would like 2 hens since I think it would be easier for them to acclimate to my current flock if they have a familiar face with them. Stupid chicken math!! We currently have a white leghorn, a barred rock, a buff orpington, an australorp and the production red roo.

I am willing to pay and travel a bit to pick them up.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

the new puppy is about 3 months old..
He never had a collar on, therefore never had leash training,
He really fought it at first,, but after a short leading session, he got used to the idea and walked all the way around the house with me,,

No name yet , CC.. he will earn a name eventually..
in the mean time I call him shlt for brains, or numb nuts ..

I have him moved into the large pen with the two small girls.. they play and roll around, he just sits and watches them,,

I got Irrene's lawn mowed today.. It was quite pleasant with a girl from somewhere around the block jogging past, twice, in her bikini ..

omg Jim you are cracking me up, and no Firstchic he is 100% codger :) and this is why we love him so!!!
BTW we did not the one eye dog, the foster mom mentioned him to one of her friends and they fell in love... We had first dibs on him and Mom brought him over and he was sooo sweet. Poor thing gets kicked out of the puppy mill business, where he has never walked on grass, cause his eye is infected and bulging. Gets his nutz removed, 3 teeth pulled and then the eye removed finally healed enough to be put up for adoption...But a sweeter dog you have not met, not a guard dog, but a cuddler... he did perk his ears when he saw the the girls though!
Hard to fathom this cool weather eh?
Night all!

So Momg, you got a dog from a puppy mill? Good for you, we have rescued 3 so far in our lifetime....we still have two, one had to be put down, but, she was quite old when we did it, she was a blue healer, Australian sheep dog, best dog we ever had. We still have her ashes on the mantel.

Hope to meet you sometime, Jim, sounds like you are quite a character.

The critter war continues here in Waupaca. I am determined to have a harvest this year. I replanted some things, hoping that they will mature and ripen before the first frost. I'll probably only get scallions and not full sized onions but that's OK. The corn is doing well (minus the few that were dug out of the ground, potatoes are looking beautiful. Squash is all iffy. The carrots are lost in the weeds. Everything else is a toss up.
