Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

probably multi colored , random colored, mutts ..

the sex link rule is a barred HEN and a non-barred ROOSTER,,
It does work with a barred rock hen and a RIR Rooster.
It does work with a few other breeds, also..
I had a list once,,  it is long since lost ..

Awesome, let me know if you find your list. I'd love to have it for reference.

So sorry to hear about your red Cind.

Drake, cute story. I too would trim some wing feathers on that girl to get her to go into the coop at night where it is safe. Once she is bigger, I doubt she will be able to fly up that high, but that can depend on breed. Is she a bantam or LF?

Welcome to all the newbies! Hope you like it here.

Sorry amazon, never heard of that place before.

Well, DH changed the location of where we are building out chicken coop - it is now going to be in the barn. The new location moves the chickens way from the road and places them on the edge of the fields. Hopefully, when I let them free range they will stay off the road this way... DH was worried that it would get too hot in the sheep shed where I wanted them to be.

The lower level of our barn is all concrete block walls, and the location for the chicken coop is the little solid concrete room that connects the silo to the barn. The window is completely rotted out, so we are placing a chicken door in a piece of plywood for 1/2 of the opening and wire mesh in the other half. There will be ramps inside and out to the elevation of the window/chicken door.

DH wanted to make the people door to the barn solid wood, I convinced him to make it a Dutch door with a screened top 1/2. I am worried about making sure there is going to be enough ventilation - did I mention this is a SOLID concrete room which means a concrete roof and 4 concrete walls. He wants to make sure that it can be closed off from the rest of the barn incase we need to add heat during the winter. I keep saying that ventilation is more important than heat. We will probably be removing one of the silo doors (hopefully the top one) and placing a mesh screen in there to allow the silo to act as a chimney for the room and vent it.

This room will be predator proof as long as I close the chicken door every night. There will be a 10 foot x 30 foot fenced run off this coop also, with a door that can be opened to allow them to free-range and a deer fencing netting on top.

ANY COMMENTS ON THE DESIGN CONCEPTS FROM THOSE WHO KNOW CHICKEN KEEPING?
My chicks are 4 weeks old and just about completely feathered. They want more room than the tiny "City Coop" that they are in now. it is one of those 3 foot x 6 foot coop/run buildings that you can buy at the store.

Yep, the dutch door is a good idea....and if that is the only window, I don't like that. chickens love sunlight...in the winter it helps to warm the coop, and a must to keep them laying, unless you plan on providing light. Good idea to keep them back from the road though. I like a lot of windows in the coop.

The business(s) have kept us hustling. Not enough hunting/trapping time. Problem with 1/2 tame predators ( neighbors think of them as their pets...including have them play with their dog ) is that they strike at any time of day. Best layer...was the unknown one of last years chicks...but I think it was a black sex link...is the latest.

Not sure on course of action....other than some hunting sunday am & late pm.
