Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good evening,

I tototilled all of the corn rows today,, twice each, once up and once back.. Annie has the first 5 rows weeded.. really looks nice..

when I fed the pups after supper, I sat outside and watched them eat,, the mosquitoes didn't hardly bite me,, probably because I was all sweaty and stunk too bad..

So sorry to hear about your red Cind.

Drake, cute story. I too would trim some wing feathers on that girl to get her to go into the coop at night where it is safe. Once she is bigger, I doubt she will be able to fly up that high, but that can depend on breed. Is she a bantam or LF?

Welcome to all the newbies! Hope you like it here.

Sorry amazon, never heard of that place before.

Thanks.
My son and I are putting a "roof" over the chicken run this weekend,so no more escaped chickens in the future.
"Is she bantam or LF?" I don't know what either of those means,I'm a rookie. I have 4 DeKalb Blacks, and 9 Bovan (sp?) Browns,as far as breed goes.
What is bantam and LF mean?

Bantams are "miniature" chickens, so to speak, and LF are large fowl or standard size chickens. It sounds like you have some sex link hybrids so those are standard or LF. Has anyone informed you about the life span of sex link hybrids? Do you plan on butchering in the future?

While sexlink chicks are more reasonably priced than purebreds (and are easier to know you have all females), there is a downside to them. They are bred to, among other things, produce a large quantity of eggs in a short period of time and then be sent off to "freezer camp" while still reasonably young. As a result, a majority of the sexlinked breeds will be done laying eggs by the age of 2 to 2 1/2 years old. Not too long afterward they will essentially die of "old age" because their bodies just burn out & their organs begin to shut down. It is a bitter lesson to learn for newbie chicken owners, I know. I was one of them.

I think it is rotten that hatcheries sell these breeds without informing the buyer of what they are in for, but that's just my opinion.

Jim, here is an article that mentions genetics & breeding of sexlinks:

Cute pups!

Thank you for posting the pics.

Hi All!

Yep, I think most of us have bought and lost sex links. And they can be such nice friendly birds it's hard when they get sick and die.

Nothing new.

...
here's the newbie,, 3 months old,, picked him up in Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday,
he will grow into that oversized collar..

...
this is the smallest girl .. she is not as wooly as her sister..

...
the wooly sister to the right,, it is never too hot to have a mild rough and tumble..
How pretty!!!!!

Nice Late morning here! I understand working with what you have wyo. If they are able to free range during the day that will help a lot. I don't think any of the birds will remain inside when you open the door...except to stay and lay, or return to lay. It should work out ok.

Hoping everyone has a great week-end...

good afternoon,

WyoD,, on one of my coops, I hung a steel door on the outside, and I made a screen door on the inside.. in the summertime I use the screen door,, and in the cold months I close the steel door..

you can pick up used doors on Craig's list for cheap ..

I have 5 of these steel doors hanging in my garage and on coops.. I don't have more than $15.oo invested; total ..

your coop sounds like Fort Knox.. it will work , I am sure.. sounds more like a tornado shelter than a chicken coop.. it can do double duty,, sit in there with the chickens and let the tornado blow ..

Just passed that area is a 12x20 root cellar. There will be food stored in that building - better place for a storm cellar I think. One of the neighbors called it the building that collapsed...

I won the first battle and the door inside the barn will be wire mesh on the top 1/2. Compromise is that it will have a solid plywood panel that can be put in if we need to heat the space. They are MY chickens as he keeps saying, but he has really bonded to them. I am almost afraid to tell him that sex-link chickens have short lives. But, he is already making plans for extra coop space - as he said to me "IF you decide to raise purebred chickens." He already has decided that "I" will be getting more chickens. lol!

Yup, I know what you mean, DS told me the chickens would be mine, he is doing more for them than I do. Told me last nite at dinner, I was getting 5 more RIR for my birthday....next week....guess they are pullets about 12 weeks old. Goes to show who is into the chickens.

HI All!

LOL, yep, My DH said I need more chickens because I can't fill all the egg orders. However, he works too many hours to help out with the coop and what has to be done there. I can't take care of more without help
