Dreamer, our main/free range coop is in the milk house. It is block wall. We have 2 large windows. However only one has an opening. We constantly battle frostbite in that coop due to poor ventilation. I realism you may not have another option as ours are also limited. But it is a real potty when some of them have toe issues.
We did move the ducks to the outhouse last winter as they tend to play in the water. However that did not do much to help.
crazy busy here! Preparing for fair! I wish I could show you guys the pics of the Light Brahma and Silkies in the tub! You don't realize all the clumped on mud from the storms until you start to bathe them!

good early afternoon,

had two phases of the storm come through here,, it seemed like it thundered continuously for five minutes straight,, then I figured that it might have been hail on the metal roofs ? I did not go to see what the garden looks like.. but all of my buildings are standing,,

......jiminwisc....
We had that continuous rumbling thunder down here too early this morning. It lasted a long time but I don't think it went on for 5 minutes. It was pretty weird though.

I did not go assess the entire yard, but close to the house we had 2 big dead trees go down. The woodpeckers are going to be bummed.

Welcome birds4kids!

Sorry to hear about your corn.

Hi All!

We got storms too but not too bad. We didn't have damage, don't know about the rest of the area. So humid it's so hard for me to breath. Not getting anything done outside of my room w/AC.

Hope no one got hit too bad. Shame about the trees BigZ, can you save some?

Night All!

Neighbor actually had some damage from yesterday morning's storm, big maple shed some limbs onto their swingset and a glass top table flipped next to their pool. He compared it to the damage they had from the tornado storms 2 years ago but that one hit my place much harder. I lost 2 black walnuts completely and a lot of damage to others. Yesterday wasn't so bad and we really needed the rain.

Thank you for the advice. I bought a thermometer with max/min recording for out there today. Now I wish I had bought the one that reads humidity also. I figure, we will go with this room for now; and if issues arise - I will force a move into the other building. One advantage that I have is the huge empty silo that has doors into this room. Opening the top door has created a nice air flow through the room. We will be doing the window tomorrow, so we will see it that helps also. I am going to make everything movable. The roosts will be built bench-style, the waterer is already set-up so I can take it apart if I need to. The nest boxes are already here, built by a previous owner at some point. I will simply bolt them onto a set of legs so they are stacked.

Ahhh finally have the air conditioning on in the house yesterday... Been a cool summer thus far...
Isn't it funny how vermin always know when something is ripe for picking... Deer have gotten my tulips just a day before bloom more years than not... and that is the reason I do not even bother with corn in my little garden... I planted double thick rows of peas and got a virus in one half and the other barely saw a pea pod thought there were lots of blooms... Thinking it is those darned 13 stripe ground squirrels, cause in 5 years I have never gotten more than a dozen strawberries too...I am currently waging war on rabbits... but my aim is not so good as to hit a ground squirrel and they must be eating while we are at work. If I didn't have such allergies I would think about rescuing a couple of feral cats. We just don't have a place outdoors to house outside cats other than the coop.

My egg production is down to nothing... Not sure what is going on... I have dosed them all for mites and the butts are looking better on them all cept the Cherry Egger and she is probably going to the big Coop in the sky soon.It is kind of early for molting isnt it? Just seems kind of sudden. and it has not been hot and they are well fed and watered.
Take care all

Welcome newbies!

Thanks for the kind words for the beardie!

Great pics Jim, reminds me of Theo as a pup. He is doing great, but will need his knee surgery this summer. Otherwise, he comes in once a day to hang out with us, but has learned the words "out" for get out of the kitchen as well as it is time to go back outside, "go lay down" for when we are eating, but over all what we are working on is "OK" for when strangers come to the house and we want him to stand down, so to speak.

Weather related, I haven't spent much on water thus far as the rain is maintaining a good soaking on the garden this year! We've only had a few limbs, luckily, come down during the storms.

Well, I sold the Honda minivan and with some of the $ we bought a '02 Ford F250 7.3 turbo diesel. Now we can think about campers and boats!!!!

Bigz-is that camper still for sale by camp?

Afternoon all.... my seeds all come from www.sandhillpreservation.com ...it's the cylindra variety that we love here for years and won't go back to the others Mom. I'm blessed with 10 to 12 eggs daily.

I have to check closer Cind on the down trees....the white ash is worth saving the trunk for boards, I'm sure at least 4 eight foot logs.

Nope CS, it was only there another week and was sold....Congrats on the new real wheels. That will handle any job you have!

I have so much trouble with raccoons and deer that buying corn from the farmer near here makes so much more sense. I'll get 10 doz for canning, freezing, and eating for less than what the seed, fertilizer, and labor (mine) would cost. He always plants really sweet stuff. Don't get me wrong, I would grow my own if I could see it's worth it. I cut 3 big heads of broccoli today...gave one to my mom and one to the mother in law, and I'm eating one..... My Mother said....oh my God it's so big it won't fit in the crisper....

Have Fun...bigz

Yep cut my broccoli too and got it froze.... beautiful heads, with the cooler summer, didn't make it into the crisper though, I like to freeze them and get a sweeter taste... actually made it in the nick of time could start to see the yellow of blossoms starting...Zzzzz who are you feeding? 10 doz omg that would last the two of us empty nesters years...

ChickenScratch.... sorry to hear Theo is needing surgery... My daughters rescue is recovering from a torn tendon too, Hard to keep a pup inactive for 8 weeks waiting for it it heal... Think Theo is probably best behaved though

I like to grow odd and heirloom veggies, not that I believe GMO etc. is going to kill me, just think today's grocery store varieties meant for single day mechanical harvest, long shelf time, sturdy for transport, all has little to do with enjoyable food. This year the two does and 3 fawns have topped off my bean and pea plants a few times.

Unfortunately the "living mulch" is doing really well in the garden this year.....
