Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am still setting up here. Blu-Kote is on the shopping list. I plan on putting a Care Box outside the coop door. Those things that need to be kept on hand for emergencies. Aside from Blue-Kote, what else do you recommend to be kept on hand?
I have scarlex oil spray, works for leg mites, its anti fungal and anti-bacterial, a wound dressing just not blue kote... . But I also have Blue Kote.
For vent gleet etc an anti fungal... like monostat with an applicator...
Veggie oil spray for spraying legs for lice( maybe vasoline too) but I like the oil spray best.
Sevin dust for creepy crawly critters.
Tube of anti bacterial salve like neosporin triple anti-biotic etc.
Athletic tape and a good pair of scissors.
Needle and thread... some say no, but it has worked for me with huge gashes, just do not sewn tightly, but enough to pull some skin closer together. Chickens are amazing healers in general!

Only use the neosporin without the pain killer.

I have had some pretty big gashes in the sides of my hens from the roos & have never had to sew them up. I get the skin as close together as I can after flushing with water & smearing with neo, then put a gauze pad or the tough pads from Walmart on and wrap very snugly with vet wrap. It also greatly helps to isolate the injured bird for at least a few days. As others have said, chickens are amazing healers.

Here is a link to the tough pads I am referring to. They are great for chickens. They stay stuck on around the wound very well as long as you cover them well with vet wrap.

Hi All!

When it comes to wounds... I'm a Flush it, Green Goop and maybe Supper Glue and/or vet tape person. Blu-Kote for minor stuff.

Storkey is broody again. I'd like to give her eggs, she's a good mom, but I got that **** Marek's here.

Night All!

Nice late Summer day again.....it will be cold for a long time in the future, and I'm enjoying this weather!

Great information on the health care kit....the blu-kote is really helpful if the area is bloody....chickens are relentless at picking the red place.....the blu-kote eliminates their desire to peck at another's wound.

Momgille....if you still have pickles and dill and onions and garlic......I have a never fail refrigerator recipe for pickles....you will need either half gallon or gallon jars though. Let me know and I'll post the recipe.....they keep for years.....

Maters are really looking good...I have a card table full so far....the canning is close by......

I will have a busy Sat down at Camp....it's the 75th anniversary of scouting at our church....big bash from 11am to 3 pm...with a corn roast cooked by yours truly, and the scouts doing something with whole pork loins....I, with help will be cooking 10doz ears of corn....

I made these today sans peppers ('cause they're not ready yet and I'm NOT buying any) - I've made these before and loved them. just kept them in a bowl in the fridge and they went quickly.

Ingredients

makes 8 cups
  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 6 cups sliced cucumbers
  • 1 cup sliced onions
  • 1 cup sliced green bell peppers

Directions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring vinegar, salt and sugar to a boil. Boil until the sugar has dissolved, about 10 minutes.
  2. Place the cucumbers, onions and green bell peppers in a large bowl. Pour the vinegar mixture over the vegetables. Transfer to sterile containers and store in the refrigerator.

Nice Packer win....

OK, I'll give it up!

These must be made in glass containers, either gallon or half gallon and can be spears or sliced rounds for burgers.

In your jar layer, fresh dill, sliced onions, whole garlic cloves to taste (4per gallon) 3"- 4" cukes cut into spears, or slicers.

The brine for a gallon ( simply mix, no cooking)

2 cups white vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup canning salt
mix in a quart jar till completely dissolved and pour over your packed jar; then add cold water to the very top.....cover tightly and mix well tipping over and back. Allow to sit on the counter out of the direct sun for 3 days to the hour they were packed....then refrigerate for a couple weeks....

Simply cut the brine in half for half gallons

1 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup canning salt
2 garlic cloves

They turn out crispy and last forever.....
