Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning, awesome nice outside .. sat out and drank some coffee.. no mosquitoes or flies,
the only pest was Zeke wanting to be petted..

butchering some pullets today.. 10 or 12 ..

after that I am taking the blades off the mower and getting it ready for the new blades that are supposed to be here in a couple of days..

depending on the heat, I might even rototill that strip of new lawn along the pine tree row..

Nephew Dan came and picked all the beans,, there should be another picking by tomorrow..
can't think of anybody who might want some..

Pretty hot and steamy today.

I need to go to town and pick up some more chick feed. How much are these little buggers supposed to be eating, lol? The last bag went pretty quick, but they are getting big fast! I am going to try to weigh them this weekend. I am working on the fenced in run this weekend. I am hoping that they will be good free-rangers and eat less of the chicken food. Definitely going to process some roosters in a couple of weeks. DH selected those first 2 candidates.

Two of the three Sagitta roosters are going - they are pushy around the food and peck at our legs when we go in to feed them. Our mystery chick is growing into quite a nice rooster. We can pick him up without any fuss from him and he is by far the biggest one of the group, a really solid fellow. Dark burgundy in color and his tail has black feathers, he is starting to look a lot like a rhode island red. He will call the hens over if he sees me outside the screened window with fresh clover.

good afternoon,

just took a break after butchering nine chickens.. The AC sure felt good..
we selected the smaller of the chickens to kill.. except for one that we thought might be a roo..
turned out just to be a large pullet,, dressed out at 5 pounds not counting heart, liver, neck and gizzard ..
the two smallest were 3 pounds each..
One that was indicative of most of them that are still running around dressed out to 4 pounds.

these pullets were hatched on May 7 ..
from the first neck slit to all in the fridge, and the mess cleaned up,, less than an hour.. not too bad for great g'ma and g'pa ..

I was impressed at how easily the feathers came off.. IDK if it was because they are meaties, or just because they are quite young ..

now that I am cooled off, I don't feel the urge to leave the AC and go back outside just yet..

Fish Fry Friday...and a warm one at that. I'll be setting up the outside cooker for tonight. Perch walleye and gills, with fresh fries from fresh dug reds, and I cut a big head of cabbage and pulled a couple carrots for slaw...a cool brew will go goodie too.

I think Suzie's Uncle has the best idea about the meaties.....get them the end of August, and butcher them in the cool Fall weather....that's what I'm doing next year...I have enough cockerels for this years batch.

ya know? while I was plucking chickens today, I was doing that math,, If I got them in July, we could be doing them in late September when it is much cooler ..

next year..

I think DH is starting the math on getting some meaties. Haven't even tried processing ours roos yet and he is thinking of more!
you still have time this summer to order meaties.. the roos will be good practice ..
I'm always willing to enable ..

I am thinking I will finish building the whizbang plucker that I have started in the shop..
we have a nice commercial drum plucker, but it is no match for the whizbang.. and my back would hold up much better ..

Some of you pros should have a workshop where you teach the rest of us how it's done. I'd pay a fee to learn how to do it myself! I'm not overly fond of killing a living thing but I could always have the hubs do that part for me. (He's an old farmer but his mother and grandmother always did all the butchering.) He should learn also. There. You already have two ready to be schooled!

We put a fan in the window of the coop this evening as it was brutally stifling in there with no air moving. You would think the chickaroos would know enough to roost a bit closer to the ground on a day like today. The only smart one is the crazy broodie chick who sleeps in the empty nest on the floor.

The hubs took me out to Simpson's for our anniversary tonight. 'bout time. Our anniversary was July 15th. He still owes me a movie and popcorn when/if ever something decent comes out.

If you're in Waupaca for Arts on the Square tomorrow be sure to come out to the store and visit me. I'm just south of the Red Mill on the corner of Danielson and Crystal Rds. Downtown events always make for a slow day for those of us who are outside the city limits. I've got sun tea and some delicious refrigerator pickles waiting for you!!
