Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I guess pictures are in order .. they do have single combs, black legs and a couple of them have brownish reddish feathers on their necks.. those are the ones I thought were roosters, Annie says they are pullets .. time will tell..

a tip for you chicken butchers.. leave the gizzards intact and coot them as much as you can before turning them inside out.. the inner membrane that peels out will become more leathery and tougher.
then you can take it out without tearing it .. I just did 10 out of 12 without tearing them,,

when I worked at the chicken farm we did a couple thousand a week ..

there is a technique to it..

some apples have dropped off the tree here, too.. only they are still quite tart.. the chickens love them though..

Next winter I really have to prune the apple tree very severely ..
I am surprised that it even gives us apples.. It is completely surrounded and almost buried by the big pine trees.. another picture is in order for that ..

had another meal from that chicken for supper.. 2 meals for 3 people and still enough for a couple of sandwiches ..

Sara if you are talking about "property" taxes then the best place for advice is call your town assessor's office (most town's now contract this out). I know here in Vilas and Onieda ctys if hay is cut, or have fenced areas for livestock, or sell some farm products you can qualify for "Agricultural" classification. I am involved in some USDA programs and my land qualifies to various degrees, the woodlots are classified as "Ag Forest" the farmed portion is classified as Ag,,,,,both are lower assessments than straight Forest crop or single family dwelling.

Good luck,,,,remember to smooze the bureaucrats you will be talking to  ;)

Thank you for your advice. I noticed you mentioned... "Here is vilas and Oneida county". Is that where you are from, or did you read that's where I am from? I'm just curious. You are the first local person I have found on this site!

I believe you also have to be on land that is zoned AG.  Just having the land zoned AG makes a huge difference with your property taxes.

We are on AG land, and we are not in any of the federal farm programs or anything.  The land was farmed at one time, so the fields are in the USDA database, but it is not currently farmed, so not eligible for any programs.

Being on AG land has its problems also - we almost lost out on this place because it was AG zoning.  We already owned a place and could only get a mortgage for this place as a "Second Home" mortgage.  We had a hard time getting non-farm insurance but the mortgage company wouldn't accept farm insurance because the coverage is different.
Being labeled as a FARM is a pretty generic term.
Why do you want to be a FARM?  Are you looking to get into the farm programs through the government?  ie: crop insurance, farm loans

Thank you for your advice. I am not looking for any federal programs, free money or discounts, or anything like that. And I don't want or need to be labeled as a farm. I merely was curious if what I was told was accurate. I used to own my own coffee shop, and from experience I know the government doesn't make things easy. So I also know if you accidently make any mistakes with taxes it can be a nightmare. So the people who mentioned to me that I should maybe talk to an accountant are right. I will do that.

Thanks again, and have a good day.

I'm about as "local" as they come, a true "native species".
My farm is on the county line, it is in Oneida Cty. pm me if you have questions or need additional info.

Hi All!

What is coot?

Nice list THANKS!

I know some of you may be undecided on your opinion of Small Animal Swaps, but I started a petition to send to the DATCP to try and lift the ban on them. It has nearly wiped out my small business of selling chicks as it has done to many others. I'm near the point of having to shut down completely if something doesn't change. So if any of you are with me on helping stop the ban please go sign my petition and leave a comment on your thoughts. Thank you.

Cindlady, what is a "coot"?

Hey folks, I THINK, I know what is going on, on the other hand, I don't do much thinking...One of my black sexlink or production birds(never figured out what they really are) the first birds I got anyway, had something hanging out of her vent the other day.....looked like a string of snot with a little ball on the end. I figured it was an egg that went funky and did not bother her. Yesterday it was gone and she seemed fine. That is just one of those strange egg things, RIGHT?

an animal attack wears off within a few minutes.. unless the chicken gets injured, then it might take about a day.. or if the wound is severe, it may take a few days until the chicken starts to heal..
I have to disagree with this one, Jim - One of my hens was injured by a pred and she was crazy skittish and paranoid for weeks. She wouldn't come out of the coop for over a week and when she did she would not walk past the area where the attack too place for months.

Okay well I told the seller how better to package them in the nicest way I could. I don't know if he is going to package them differently but he sent out a dozen replacement eggs yesterday so I guess we wait and see. He never did say anything about the description saying 16+ eggs other than basically denying it but like I said he is sending us a dozen more and we still have the nine left so I'm trying to think the best of him. Eggs should be here in a couple days
