Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all!

6 to 8 inches of white stuff expected here starting late Friday. We just received some greenhouse "plastic" to partially cover the turkey run, and I'd really like to get that up before the storm arrives. If not, it will probably melt. I'll try to post a picture if we get it done. Baby's awake - gotta run.

Just picked up some sugar beets for the deer feeder in the yard. Hopefully it attracts them and gives them a snack for the winter. I gotta em from a farm north of town, they sell them by the skidster bucket load for 50 bucks. Can't beat that. Time for bed back to work at 10 tonite

I do not always remember to go big, but i try..

@Celtic Chick
So sorry I haven't gotten back to you been quite a few days of everything that could go wrong going wrong but I'm hopeful things are looking up. Just wanted to let you know that I'm/we're still interested just waiting on a definitive answer from DH2B. I was wondering if you could or would mind posting some pictures of the roosters so I could see them and show them to him. Also is the lavender split also 100% English? Thank you so much hope I haven't missed out on your wonderful offer.
No worries. I still haven't gotten them on CL. They are such sweet, mild mannered boys, I almost hate to get rid of them. No, the lav split isn't English. Just the BBS. I will try to post pics tonight.

Hi all,

winter is here,, snowing like crazy now.. the water puddles are not frozen so I don't think the snow will last this round,,

the magnificent 7 are all out somewhere in the yard,, they don't seem to mind any kind of weather..

Frankie was barking ever since first light,, I finally went out to see what was bothering her,, turns out there was a large styrofoam cooler across the field along the tree line,, the wind was moving it around,, I went and retrieved it and now it is nice and quiet again here on the homestead ..

we got another double yoker today,,

since it is too nasT to be outside, how about a few posts on here just to let us know you are alive ..

Holy Windmill here today. The trees are rockin and rollin here bigtime! Hope it dies down for the opener.
That's a great deal on the beets cw....for folks that don't know, the beets really become sweet tasting for the deer after they freeze...you should have quite the feeder activity.
Made 13lbs of kraut today...it will rest in the basement for a month prolly before we bag and freeze....my late cabbage was hard as a rock again...makes the best kraut.
Don't remember if I mentioned that I took 20lbs of venzun up to Kropf's meats at Bowler...gonna turn it into mettwurst and garlic summer sausage.

Stay Warm...bigz

Good evening!

Been awhile. Fall rush is winding down. Still a couple of weeks scheduled out. So again it will be a very limited deer season.
Did make a 4 day trip to Lake of the Woods for some walleye fishing in October. Had a great time...and didn't feel to guilty getting away for a
few days. Has been 15+ yrs since I took a hunting/fishing trip. We will try hard to keep Lake of the Woods a annual event.

Now the flock.......that's a different story. This winter will be a time to ponder on what I want to do. Enjoy doing my meat birds, and was doing meat birds prior to getting layers.
The layers have been a different story. The brahmas I picked up in Sept. have been a huge letdown. They still have not become part of
the flock, no idea how to get on the roost bars....I have put them there every night for past 3 weeks ( around 24-26 week old pullets )....and yes they have no clue how to fly off roost. Poop boards below roost bar...even have a step board for them. Have never had this problem before.
Eggs?? Not the brahmas yet. The others might lay an egg/week. Basically just a few more pets to feed. Dog & cat are the house pets....and the only pets I will have. So when I have time this winter I will mull it over & decide what to do.

It was a great fall for working outdoors. Today was a little chilly.....but we have been spoiled.
Good luck & a safe hunt!

Jim, did the plucker turn out well?
Anything you would do different?

Sclark: Great job on the building!

Windy here today also. Had a couple of snowflakes in the air this afternoon about sundown. It didn't seem to phase the chooks at all, they still wanted their treats this afternoon.
I upped the treat quotient, at least in my mind. I added some cracked corn and oats to the sunflower seeds they get in the afternoon and the birds really went after the corn. The treats are a bribe to keep them out of the coop while I collect the eggs and do stuff in the coop. I am also tossing a little BOSS in the coop to encourage them fluffing their bedding.
I let them out to free-range for a short while yesterday. They followed me around like a flock of feathered puppies. Only a couple of them actually seemed to eat any grass and clover. The Special Blacks that I have really liked the grass, as soon as but the rest only ate the BOSS that I sprinkled out to tempt them out of the run. Two of the Sagitta couldn't figure out the way back in and I had to corner them and carry them into the run. Silly birds!
How much are you all feeding your birds? Mine always act like they are starving - even when they have full crops.

.the plucker did turn out well,, we did about 20 meaties with it.
they all plucked perfectly,,
One thing that I might do differently next time might be to use a lighter chain drive..
the first one I used 50# .. that is about what motorcycles use.
then I did the next 3 with 40# .. they work just fine, but I think that is still a bit overkill..
the next one I will go down to 35#.. and maybe after that, try a 30#.. 30# is about what a bicycle uses.. I found 30# on a snow blower drive once.. so I think it would be plenty for a plucker..

I am also thinking of making the drum less deep.. No real reason for this, I just think it would be something to try ..

...........jiminwisc........

..
.this is the first 40# chain one that I built..
yes, those are wheel chair wheels on it..
the card with my most recent plucker is in my camera upstairs.
It looks just like this one, only I used the smaller wheels off of the wheel chair on it..
