Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have a Budgie in quarantine.... poor baby was on his last legs! He is missing all the feathers around his vent, but does not have any discharge at all. He is also pretty darn thin. We scooped him out of the aviary and set up the hospital cage last night. We have the heating pad on one side of the cage and have my heat lamp (with a regular bulb) on the top. Gave him some millet, water with ACV and some orange. After he managed to get some food into himself and a LOT of the water he perked up. I am thinking he has a case of coccidiosis....... it is the only thing that makes sense! He will be in the sick ward for a bit yet, I want to see if I can pick up some antibiotics for him....... Today he is much better than he was yesterday. I did pick up some baby vitamins tonight to add to his water, we will see if that will help him out even more.

Loved the storms but hated being stuck at work when they rolled in! Hope everyone is ok and did not get flooded out!

good morning,
still only 3 guinea babies.
the pullet is looking good. she will be going back out to the coop today. I really thought she was a goner.
I am keeping the pullets in the coop because of the eagle hanging around..

today is tomato planting day. I didn't make any compost this year, so I am going to buy a couple of bags to put in with my tomatoes and peppers. I don't like to do it this way, but it will be better than nothing ..

the potatoes are growing like mad. as soon as it dries up out there I am going to have to hill them.
prolly on Friday.

...jiminwisc..

ETA: It is almost noon, I got the tomatoes all planted by 11:eek:o AM.

I like that; instant garden .
the peppers will be going in shortly and then the beets, cukes and buttercup squash, then I am all done planting.

No onions or carrots this year.
Annie always finds a sale on both in the fall.

the sun has been shining since about 10:eek:o . really got warm fast after that .

We have a lot of eagles around here. One of the reasons my girls don't free range. I am pretty sure I lost a dachshund to one last year. Tried putting my injured pullet back in with the others and they started picking on her again. So she is back in the house for a while. Daughter does not want to rehome her so I am not sure what to do. Starting to put up the tomato support. The are about 18 inches tall and good and bushy this year. We had a friend staying in our camper last year (turned out to not really be a friend) and he kept "helping" with the garden. It was pretty much a flop last year. We usually have tons of extra for neighbors, friends, and food pantry donations. Last year we had barely enough to do what we wanted to. Looking like a better year this year. This year we make pickled beets and salsa again so extra rows of the ingredients for those. Put in several rows of marigolds to help attract the neighbors bees this year. We shall see how it goes.

I read about it here on BYC and on Pintrest. I'm still trying to figure out what works best for us. I don't think I like sand.

I don't think I would like sand, either.
It might work well where you could sift the sh--t out like a litter box like in a horse stall or dog kennel..

for deep litter, I like to put down a good layer of wood chips when I can get them. wood shavings are my second choice.
then on top of that I put straw or hay. I would prefer if they would be chopped, but I don't have a bale chopper.

If you put the straw or hay down with nothing under it, it becomes matted and very difficult to shovel up .

the above formula is what I use for winter bedding. I do not clean the coop until spring. when the floor gets very soiled, I just add another layer of straw..

If you are going to clean the coop every week or two, then you don't need the shavings underneath..

I got all 12 of the tomatoes planted. I have the peppers soaking in water. I will be going out in a bit to get them into the ground. I have the bottom leaves all trimmed off already..
I plant the peppers just like tomatoes; right up to the bottom leaves. UncaDan taught this to me.. It really makes for strong plants.

Thank you for the valuable information. Perhaps I will switch the shavings. Where do you buy them?

I had read in many places the sand worked really well but it just seems to compact and get wet
Which type of shavings are best, and can they go right into the garden for compost after the nitrogen breaks down?

Took some of our FFA students to the FFA State Convention this week! What a great opportunity, and what amazing kids!!!!! Very proud of our state!

Cool job with the students wee, they are our future leaders and education is the best medicine for them.
