SWEET...

Picked all 4 strawberry beds today. Going to go salmon fishing this weekend so have to get er done. Ended up with over 4 gallons of berries. I think I will have enough to last the winter! Also made 2 batches of strawberry freezer jam and got 1 row of tomato plants staked up.

you may have just sold me on firing up the smoker this weekend and smoking some salmon...

IDK what happened, I have been on and off the puter all day and all of a sudden I get a full page of posts. some of them many hours old.. I was thinking I was the only one left in the world.

Any kind of shavings works, only stay away from treated wood, those shavings take a loooong time to break down.
You can get shavings from F&F, but if you can find a sawmill around you somewhere, you can also use sawdust .
just be aware that sawdust can be dusty. but it is better for soaking up moisture than the shavings.

I seem to remember a sawmill on 83 just outside of Burlington...... Just stay away from cedar as well.

We finally broke down and built a picnic table...... Only took us 16 years. :D

What type of smoker do you have?
I used to have a homemade one made out of gas grill parts and a international harvester round too refrigerator. That was a sight to see but it worked pretty well. I downsized now to a Bradley electric smoker. If I could stay home and smoke stuff all day every day I totally would.....meat that is

I have a homemade one from an old fridge. I love it. Used to use wood to heat it now moved to gas grill element. I did 22 pounds of venison jerky last fall in one firing and I do the turkey for Thanksgiving every year.

good morning,

Now I have a turkey in the brooder.

I don't want to alarm anyone, just a heads up.
about 2 years ago we had a nice guy on here named Zeke.
He had a gas fired smoker. long story short, it blew up and killed him,,
If your pilot light goes out, do not try relighting it without opening the door.

good afternoon,

I took Annie up to the strawberry patch, she picked enough for a couple batches of shortcake.

I rototilled the potatoes again,, did half the corn patch, the whole row of beans and got the last bit of garden space tilled and ready for the cukes and squash.

I have to stretch a hose down to the garden. Can't depend 100% on the rain. although it has been dead on so far.
I am going to spread lots of straw around the tomatoes and pepper plants. If any weeds come up, I will go after them with the weed whacker.

I still have to hang strings for the tomatoes. Another trick that UnkaDan taught me..
I have a little time of grace before it is crucial.

Just one turkey hatched so far. I never know about the eggs that people bring for me to hatch,
were they set on?
How long ?
how many different nests did the eggs come from ?
It makes it hard to put a definite hatch date on them,
