Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

GOOD MORNING! I AM LOVING THE SUNSHINE. I PUT SOME ASSORTED SEEDS IN THE GROUND YESTERDAY INSIDE MY GREENHOUSE. ALL COLD HEARTY AND OLd SEED, SO NO LOSS IF NOTHING COMES UP. I ALSO TAPPED A MAPLE TREE. THE SAP IS FLOWING!

Sun is trying to pop out here...hope it does. Yep, I'm not on facebook and don't ever plan to be either. Some people spend most of the day there...good for them.

Yep, I was just talking about starting some spring salad mix...I just love all the different flavors you get in one bowl of salad.

Happy Valentines Day to everyone....might just fire up the weber tonight since it stays light longer now in the afternoon...maybe venzun loins and shrimp...best surf and turf anywhere.

Well ladies and gents idk how or when it happened but we had a buff Orpington hen missing at lock up tonight. Found a massive possum in one of the sheds with her body it had been her killer of course. Bad bad night. We snapped some pics of the possum if anyone would like to see. I don't remember if we took any of her or not. Poor baby. It was pretty horrific. Her neck, chest and back were open skin torn off most of the left breast muscle consumed. He had also eaten all of the toes off of one of her feet, and most of the meat off of her back.

Like I said it was horrific. Poor baby. What a rotten creature. I know it was just trying to survive. It was obviously an older possum as like I said it was huge and it's left ear was torn from an old fight, I'd bet. Still its hard to feel remorse for something that killed one of your birds and may have been involved in other missing birds.

Still our greatest culprits are the fox(or pair of foxes) and coyotes plus possibly the wolf which of course we won't shoot. The possum and fox heck yeah. We have also seen a few birds of prey mostly hawks but also eagles but have never had a bird confirmed taken by a aerial predator. Probably BC even the pidgeons that roost in the old silo scare the birds silly. Lol.

So now I feel rotten BC of the possum and the bird, who's name was Clover, and BC of the flu. sad.png I really used to love wildlife and I still do but having them killing your chickens does make it much harder. The possum was in the building(Quonset hut) that our feed is stored in. We just got 1000 pounds of feed Saturday. I'm sure it could have found an easier meal than my bird. Just tear into a bag for instance.

Please don't think me callous for saying this BC I absolutely feel for her and wish we could have saved her but it could have been several other birds that would have been worse. She was a good hen and a great layer of light pink eggs. She was also curious and sweet but not overly friendly. She will be missed but she was also on a list of birds to be rehomed this year and since the last possum, that ate eggs, she tried to peck at any egg we picked up. (Note: she wouldn't peck them otherwise.)

So while I'm heartbroken for her and I'll miss her and her curious gentle face I am glad to know the culprit was caught and my beloved flock are now safe again, or at least as safe as they've ever been, for now. Why oh why does everything have to like to eat chicken?!

I know I'll find myself looking for her in the future for just a few moments before I remember and tomorrow will be hardest but I know I'll have the memories of her. Much as I still do for Mickey and Ducky.

She was one of the original five chicks we ordered that started all of our chicken math. Even before we picked up those 5 which became 9 lol in addition to 7 others we picked up from a different feed store and 8 more we hatched a month later.

This brings our losses for 2016-2017 to 29 birds. sad.png that is a ton.

Make that venison and lobster or crab and I'm there! Lol I love seafood but we rarely get it right now BC of finances. But shrimp is good too. And a bit closer to our price range.

Had the initial work done for another crown..... time for #5. I have been putting this one off as long as possible, but when the filling started to break off it was time to go in. Ugh, my mouth is sore! On top of the beating my tooth and jaw took, I fell asleep on the couch before the novocaine wore off and chewed the side of my tongue. OW!!!!

BigZ, we grill all year round here. Those ribeye's on Sunday were superb! How is your mom doing?

Jim, any pics of your Apple trees you are sprouting?

ChickenDreams, sorry for your loss.

good morning, I realize nobody will answer that for a few hours. it is 3AM , I have been up since 2.

I almost took pictures of my little forest yesterday, If I remember to take the camera along up with me I will take some pics today. the apple cuttings are not doing anything that you can see. but I pulled a couple of them out of the dirt and there are tiny roots started.

I have to come up with some tall individual pots for the apples.
I am thinking of 2" pvc. I think I have a couple of sections of that somewhere here on the stead..

HAPPY VALENTINE DAY

It's amazing how much the temperature can change in a day's time. Kinda chilly this morning but it ain't too bad knowing how the weekend is going to be. I'm feeling some kce fishing in my near future. One of my buddies limited out on crappies yesterday. All between 11 and 13 inches so I think I know who I'll be going with. Got my ducks unlimited invite in the mail for the annual banquet. That's always a good time and for a good cause. They raffle off over 30 guns and everything else from decoys to tvs. Costs 40 bucks but well worth it.

I went to a ducks unlimited banquet one time. I did a big favor for one of my friends and he paid my way in,

I am going to hang around in the house today, I took the garbage to the road yesterday.

I promised some pictures of my miniature forest.
If I don't forget to take the camera along up with me.
with my aching hip, I don't go up and down the stairs any more than I have to.

I love crappidies .. I also love gills and perch. walleyes bass and northerns are OK, but the pan fish are your bread and butter fish if you don't want to starve. .
