Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning! The sun is shining here :)

None of my chickens were vaccinated. They have all done well. Some people have said have all vaccinated or none vaccinated (for Marek's at least). Whether or not that is advice to abide by is unknown by me.
I would like the name of the farm you are speaking of, as my DH has expressed an interest in raising some pigs in the future.
Have a good day all!

to me that advice sounds bogus, IMHO
you must have read it somewhere on byc.

I think it is not an issue for people who have closed flocks like Reinhardt Ranch, but for those of us bringing chickens in every year. I don't have enough room for a flock the size they recommend for a rooster nor do I have any interest in one, so we will always get new hens. If I only pay a couple bucks for chicks, the idea of Mareks hitting the flock is not so bad, but if I invest in a pricier breed then I don't want to end up with a dead flock. To quote my father... I feel strongly both ways. I think Jim's flock (and I tend to agree with him) is a perfect example of vaccine fear not needing to be an issue, but if you are putting $50 into a breeding bird... better safe than out $50. imho
On my way to Edgar for some wyandottes

I only once had an issue with chickens I purchased and brought into my flock. 4 of the 6 purchased ones died within a week. IDK if it was something wrong with them, or if they just weren't immune to whatever my flock carried.

I don't quarantine and so far I have been lucky.

on the other hand, I believe turkeys should always be vaccinated.

the pigs were cut. No vaccines or anything. The guy I bought them from kind of runs a crap operation. Won't be going thru him again because I feel like from my research I know more than he does. He's clueless about everything. If I could have taken all his pigs I would have just to make sure they got what they need. I think they should have been with mom a little longer as well

Yup Corey, I know what you mean.
they are small yet , and you could haul them to a vet's office for shots if you feel they need them,
welcome to the school of hard knocks.
we have all attended at one time or another.

I have had the bator running for about an hour.
the temp is holding around 100F
time to add some water ..
and then the eggs.

I was just told by my finance officer that I can't order my discs until later this week.
I am going to order a 3 pt receiver hitch also.
then I won't have to modify my cultivator.

I wish I could find someplace that would tell me exactly what the disc spacing should be ..

Maybe this will help?
I got a follow up message after I picked up the hens. His son was there and had pulled 8 for me to chose from. Then he questioned that I was not overpaying for them, what a nice kid. After I left, one of his parents messaged me saying that I had asked about vaccination and that they were when the were chicks. Beautiful birds, one got out already when I put the feeder in the tractor but she is back in. Even had one egg in the transport box when I got home. They are up against the run so the birds can see each other but not fight. My alpha hen, the buff, was already puffing up when she saw them.

good afternoon,
I put a new rooster in a pen for a few days before turning him loose with the chickens.
my rooster and he sized each other up the whole time until I turned him loose.. then they had their fight.
I guess it just depends upon the disposition of the birds.
there is very seldom any serious wounds collected in the pecking order fights.

the guy who wanted 3 hens today, and who I emailed back and forth all morning with, and for whom I caught 3 pretty sure layers, backed out at the last minute.
"will pass at this time" were his words.
I think he had a good laugh with his April Fool joke.
I filed his name. I hope he calls again when he really wants some chickens.
Sorry, "no chickens for you "!!

the eggs are in and the temp is back up to 99.9F
I will leave it there for a few days and then maybe lower it a point or two.

Yesterday I set a bale of straw outside of the chicken coop. they have it demolished already..

What a beautiful day!!!!!

It was so nice to sit back and enjoy the wildlife and the quiet! I could get used to this.....

Do we know if there is a bash thread going yet?

Got my asparagus patch ready for growing season today and dug up all the strawberry plants that had managed to root in outside of their beds. I planted 50 back in the beds to fill in weak spots and have 250 bagged and ready for new homes. I love this time of year. Going to top the beds with composted sawdust and chicken poo. Still have to spring weed the onions. Then I will start to tackle the main garden. Also going to revamp the mushrooms growing area. Chickens gave me a dozen yesterday and 11 today. The banties are outshining the lf. Hoping for several more warm dry days!!!!

good sunday morning

bator is holding steady at 99.8 F. going to leave it alone
because of the bator running, .
the temp in this room went from 61F up to 73F. nice.

got 1 egg yesterday.

rain this afternoon, don't need it yet.
