Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi everyone took me quite a while but I've finally found where we moved to!

How is everyone and their birds and other animals of all shapes and sizes?

Jim been wanting to ask you build whizzbang pluckers right?

DH2B is building us one.

Yes, I have built 5 of them so far.
I build one and use it until I sell it, then I build another.
each one has improvements over the prior one.
I settled on chain driven ones over the V-belt and pulley ones.
if I can be of any help, just ask.

this is a blurry picture of the motor and chain and sprocket layout that I designed.
note the motor mounts. four bolts with nuts on both sides of the motor mount plate. by screwing the nuts up or down on the bolts is how to adjust the tension of the driving chain.
I use 1 HP motors. 1725 rpm.
with that size of motor, I can do large muscovy drakes and 20 pound turkeys.

good end to a sunny sunday.
Packers won with their usual squeaker finish.

I got the rest of the roof done, except for a narrow strip that I have to rip.

then I am done with the high ladder work.
except for the ridge cap, which I haven't bought yet.

we let the bully pup and the other pup run together all day today. there was not a single fight. I did some attitude adjustment on the bully pup. he seems to have learned . I hope it remembers for a long time.

very soon we have to dig potatoes.
the tomatoes are ripening on the vines , slowly but surely. I think by the end of this week will be the official end of our growing season.
I have not even looked at the onions for a few weeks. I wonder how they are doing ?

Hi Jim I will pass along your offer of help to my DH2B I'm sure he'd like to bounce some ideas off you.

He found a Jim(in WI)that was mentioned on the whizzbang page is that you by chance?

Went to pick tomatoes and found the plants all knocked down and picked clean. There are maybe 4 cherry tomatoes left and 3 romas. My guess is skunk based on the digging around the plants. That would explain the fuss the dogs were making the other evening..

I lost another 2 hens on Saturday. These were a complete surprise. All the other ones I lost got lethargic for a couple of days and were really skinny before dying. Not these.

The black was my top hen, big and feisty. She was running around and being bossy as usual in the morning. When I got home from work, she was laying in a shallow depression all flattened out and unwilling to even try to stand. She closed her eyes when I picked her up and petted her. No fight while I examined her, couldn't find anything wrong. No interest in food or water. The other one was a sagitta, she made it into the coop and seemed fine at evening head count, but died in one of the lower egg boxes overnight. Her crop was empty and her butt was really messy. She was a big bird, hadn't lost any weight.

I will be doing a complete cleanout of the coop and spray it down. Any suggestions on what to use for sanitizing the coop? It is completely concrete so it doesn't dry out nearly fast enough.

good morning,
I somehow missed a few posts last night.

I hate it when I don't know why a chicken dies
at least if a pred gets them,,you know.
I used hilex/water for sanitizing my wire pens.
If it smells, it is working.

chxdrm , I will be glad to try to help him.
I don't know everything,,,,but close..

Yes, that is me on Utube. Herrick Kimball put
my little invention on there. He is the
Whiz Bang guy..
I sent him the plans for the rubber finger
puller , he added it into his book.

today I hope to finish the roof except for the
ridge cap.

can hardly wait to get at the finish work..
mainly window frames..

Hello!

Just introducing myself to the BYC Wisconsin community. My husband and I live just a touch south of Madison. We moved from downtown Madison to the "country" about a year ago. We have 4 ducks, 26 chickens, and a large garden (and an orchard but we aren't very good at managing it yet). We spend a lot of time working on our (100+ year old) house and building infrastructure for our little farmette.

I look forward to learning from everyone as I move into the first winter of chicken-keeping!

I did! The ducks enjoyed it even more. I don't think it was enough for our beets though. They were getting wilty so I gave them some more water and they perked up just fine.

After all the rain early in the year I was ok with a reprieve, but it swung a little too far the other way!
