Has anyone ever seen a beak deformity like this? It doesn't close. This is how it sits (bottom curved down)and the chick can't make noise. I thought it was dead so I went in to check and found it alive and deformed.

NO I have not, but it will not survive!

I don't plan on trying to "let it survive". There's a reason it didn't hatch. Nature was trying to eliminate it. I've just never seen one like this. And I'm curious as to the cause.

I hate to say it, but severe beak cross is hereditary isn't it? I've seen it in the past, but that's the worst I've seen. Don't have to worry about that one passing the gene.

That's what I'm wondering. Unfortunately I don't know what hen or rooster this came out of.

I wouldn't worry too much about who the parents are. If you figure it out, so much the better.
unless it happens a lot, I wouldn't worry too much.

I have hatched thousands of chickens. I might have had one or two with minor crossed beak. none so bad that they starved to death, though.

I am surprised that one could hatch.. but they use only the upper beak, so I guess it should not be too surprising, eh?

It didn't hatch on its own. I thought it was dead but fully formed in the egg, so I went in to see what happened. It wasn't even positioned correctly to hatch. It would have pipped on the wrong end. I actually got all the way to it's beak before realizing it was still alive. It did die shortly after. I've had shipped eggs with cross beak. But never from my own flock. And I have never seen the bottom of the beak curve down like that. I don't even know the term for it. If it keeps happening I will need to make some changes.

I'm just wondering if the deformed beak was caused by the peep growing in the wrong end of the egg? Prolly less oxygen and room to grow with the air sac on the opposite end ? just a thought. If wedged in place kinda, then the beak coulda been bent while growing against the shell..maybe. They grow so fast in the shell.

we finally successfully got the pup onto an airplane today.. by now she should be entering Florida air space..

I am glad this week is behind me.
got an email, the pup arrived in Florida safe and happy.
on Friday, we sold a puppy to some people from Withee.. they have goats and a couple of sheep.
they used to raise 200 sheep and had Maremma LGD then..
now they own an organic bakery in Withee.
they brought us a loaf of bread and a huge cinnamon roll. both are delicious..

one pup left..
