Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wisconsin chicken people. I lost 2 of my birds in four days from 2 different pens. The first one I chalked up to the 103 toasting we got over Memorial weekend, the the last one was this afternoon. Was hiding yesterday, and I separated her and made sure she had nice clean water and extra food. She ate and drank and seemed fine this morning except a little slow moving. I checked her at lunch time and she was stone cold dead. Both birds had a slightly blue comb that looked a little dehydrated but not bad. Were dusted for mites a week ago but not because I saw them. We have wild birds that get in the coop and run so we just do it if more than one gets a dirty butt or every 3 months. I have lost 5 birds this way in the last year, all were hatchery birds. Did any one else lose birds in that heat? We have huge shaded runs for them, plenty of water.

Were any of them hybrids? Production birds maybe? Those breeds that are bred for production are not long lived. They get organ failure & drop pretty fast. Otherwise it could have been due to the heat. The bigger the breed, the worse they seem to tolerate heat. If they didn't have any symptoms of illness, the heat could be the culprit. I put vitamins & electrolytes in the water to help them cope during the oppressive weather.

Sorry about your birds.

The first one was our bully wyandott and the second was a legbar hen. I suppose the legbar would be considered a hybrid. I hadn't thought of putting electrolytes in the water, I was just changing out their water with cold well water. I do have electrolytes, I will have to do that next time the temp climbs. I am worried about a couple of my broody hens and am making them get out of the nest boxes and walk around. Thanks for the wisdom!

Great advice Robin....it's really hard to figure out what the problem is with chickens when it escalates to more than one bird. I would not being chasing a brooder off her nest though...that stress is a added one that would create more problems....I'm sure she is not happy when you do that...so don't...in my opinion. Live and let live goes a long way in chicken culture…...again in my opinion.
