I was wondering why the sunshine looked so hazy the last couple days...must be the Canada fire blocking the sunshine here too.
We sure miss our cherry tree here...it died a couple years ago and we haven't had a good cheery pie since then.

makes for pretty sunsets, though..
I want to plant a couple of cherry trees in my "park". what kind do you all recommend ? can I plant them now? or wait until fall or spring .. I had two nice ones but the black walnut trees killed them..
the way the birds go after the cherries, I think I will have to plant about six trees in order to collect enough for one pie..
the last storm knocked down a great number of the black walnuts. You can really twist an ankle if you step on one the right way ..

I prefer the self pollinating Montmorency sour cherry tree. I would think most places are sold out, but don't know for sure. I like the bare root tree that's available in the Spring....I'll be shopping this late Winter and keep you posted what I find. I'm sure some prefer other varieties. I sure could go for a good ho-made cherry pie right about now...

We spent the weekend at a wedding in the driftless area, just outside of Lancaster. If we could both find jobs out there we would move in a heartbeat. I love those hills.... the bottom shot is the farm where the wedding took place.

that looks like an Amish farm I visited once.
but not in that area ..
Brent, do you belong to the arborist foundation ? they have cherry trees listed for a lot less than the seed stores..

I believe most of the orchards in Door County grow the Montmorency Sour Cherries - at least when I ask, that is what they say they grow.
What I have been spending my time on:

3 quart + 13 pints of cherry pie filling, 3 pints cherry bbq sauce, 1 batch of Danish cherry sauce, 3 pints of cherry juice, and a case of 1/2 pints of "Spirited" Cherries - 6 Amaretto and 6 Southern Comfort.
I have enough cherries in the freezer for a batch of Black Forest Sauce.
Now it is apple sauce season. I picked over 3 18"x18"x9" boxes of apples for canned applesauce. Only got 1/2 the apples picked off the trees.

I just moved my eggs into lockdown in my wooden incubator.

Weddings on remote farms are really popular now. Kinda glad I don't have any friends to be invited to these affairs. Who wants to walk around in the grass with high heals, use porta potties, no air conditioning, no fans, etc. Just not my cup-of-tea I guess.

wyo, do you have cherry trees ? or do you buy cans of cherries.
cyprus, what kind of wooden incubator do you have ? ho made ? sportsman ?
I don't wear high heals so farm weddings don't bother me. I have been to only one.
I am going to one in October for my nephew. it is at a large round barn..
one of two in our neighborhood..
it is set up for weddings and special occasions.. in the fall they have a huge corn maze.. and on July 4 they do fireworks..
a local veterinarian bought it and had it moved a couple of miles onto his land..
I just had an inquiry about Zeke. I hope the people take him.
