Forester update: trees in the yard need another 10-15 years...... the trees in the woods though are a different story completely. We have several BW trees that are in excess of 20”, ash that are on their way out due to the EAB, and hickory that can be harvested as well. Since these trees are in the woods, they have in excess of 16 board feet of lumber in them without a knot from a branch. He is going to send contact info for some lumber brokers tomorrow.

So all in all, a good day.

Oh, the toxin stays in the soil until the tree has rotted away.

I would leave them grow and harvest them when the walnuts are large enough...if the ash dies, you would have wood for the fireplace..… Standing trees are nice to have on your property...unless you need the money? Bigger trees are more valuable and marginal cutting size trees aren't going to be worth cutting after the logger takes his cut....just don't want you to be sorry for cutting your woods down with no real capital gain...just sayin.
My daughter is a forester and would recommend having one draw up a contract....loggers aren't foresters and do what they want without a contract from a forester...everyone gets a cut...I love large trees...my 2 cents is all....

About 15 years ago, a friend had a lumberjack stop at his house one day and offer to buy the "big Oak trees over the hill". He politely said "No, they are not for sale". The trees were, as the guy said, over the hill and around the bend from my friends house (he owned 120 acres). He went to set up his deer stand about 3 months later and all those big trees were gone. Well, not all of the tree, just the main trunks were taken. All the limbs and stumps and dead leaves were laying there in a jumble. The sheriff estimated that with the size and the number of trees taken, it probably took the jerk about 3 days of work to clear the trees out like that and it was probably a few thousand dollars worth of lumber.

The forester that came out was through the state; he came to evaluate if we had any BW worth anything. Since my DH grew up managing approximately 102 acres of woods with his parents, we knew we need to have somebody come in and evaluate what we have and what we need to do in order to maintain a healthy woods

The trees in the woods we would harvest are a minor dent in what we have for trees. Some of the BW have lost limbs up at the crown which will impact the lumber value of the trees are allowed to stay and begin to rot. All the trees we would harvest are quite large and personally I would prefer to have them as lumber than blown over.

We also have plenty of trees to remove for firewood, and downed trees to cut up as well.

We will have someone come out and appraise what we have and set up the harvest. We will see what the money value ends up at.

good morning,
what a difference a couple of degrees makes, eh?
yesterday I got Ollie up and running again.
there was not as much oil on the V-belt as I first thought. I just started it up and watched for slippage, there was none..
I worked the steering wheel back and forth until the power steering began to work.
added a can of Seafoam engine treatment to the transmission fluid. Hoping that will prevent any moisture from freezing in the transmission.. It is supposed to work like Heat does in the gas tank.. If it doesn't work, I think I will add some Heat into the transmission .. It is a manual transmission so these additives won't do any harm..
Annie is going to therapy today. It is really doing her heaps of good for her sore knee.
her limping is going away, gradually.
I learned how to treat her at home so she gets therapy every day..

@jvls1942 Glad to hear that Annie is feeling better. Go Annie!

My Dad is alot more mobile and his mood has improved so much since we bought him the lift chair for his birthday.

I brought his old chair home after delivering his new one. I am going to see if I can fix the broken spring that was poking him whenever he sat down and use the chair in the barn. Our "barn cat" is a real lover and wants to sit on our laps for her daily pets. I have nothing to sit on out in the barn except the ATV's, and that is not comfy to sit with her on my lap.

Nice and sunny Fish Fry Friday to all. Yep, good to hear that Annie has regained the spring in her step...kudos to you Jim for the daily therapy.
I should go and cut some firewood today, but can't seem to find the ambition to get er done today.

Hi all, Dash is extremely ill. We had to take him in and he had surgery at 1am last night. it's a 50/50 if his intestines will start working again, or if we have to put him down. I'm existing minute by minute. We don't have a tree and I don't know if we're going to be able to get one this year--it's too much on top of the vet bill. I don't even know what we're doing for presents this year.

The boys are out chopping wood, Ella is meant to be prepping eggs for sale, and we're able to visit with Dash this afternoon.

I assume Dash is the dog who puked all over in the bedroom.. I hope he makes it OK..
the kids need a tree. just go and chop down any old tree. even a Charlie Brown one.
you sound really beat down.. Christmas season does that to people. Just be content that you have your family around you.. It won't be long and they will all be going their separate ways and sometime you won't all be home for Christmas all together..
Presents don't make Christmas.. Presence does..
Merry Christmas..

Yep totally agree with Jim...if you were closer I would buy you a tree...they sell really nice balsam here for $15 and do that because they want everyone to have a affordable tree. I've been paying that for as long as I can remember....hope it stills it ends up a great Christmas kee!
