Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Does anyone have geese in the Northwoods? I have a pair of Africans, named Bill and Dianne, and they have two shelters but choose to sit out in their field all night. I put a big pile of hay for them to sit on to stay warm which they seem to like. We used to catch them every night and lock them up but that was impractical and very stressful for us and the geese. I just worry about them in this cold even though I know they’re covered in warm down and know to sit on their feet and tuck heads under their wings.

You can teach the geese to become accustomed to a routine of going to bed in a shelter every night; and without catching them. Just round them up and have them walk where you want them to go saying ‘time for bed’ or whatever you want. After dark using a flashlight helps too. They have to learn where home is with positive association.

I tried everything with them from the time they were babies with no success! Lights, treats, hearding, and everything else I could look up. For awhile I was able to sit in their shelter with food and eventually make them come in but with three little kids inside waiting for me I found that took too long and wasn’t practical. Also the male decided to start attacking me randomly even though he used to be my best bud! I wonder if an A frame structure with open ends in the middle of their area would work? That was they’re still in the open like they want but they’d me more protected from the wind with hay inside to lay on.

I never had these issues. Literally, I would walk outside with a flashlight, shine it into their house and say ‘time for bed’. The geese would just walk into their house and I would shut the door. Took all of 5 minutes.

I do the same thing with my ducks. They march right into the shelter and I lock them inside.
