Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hubby is from Lake Geneva area, we'll be moving to the Janesville area in June...I'm beginning to see that there are some chicken math enablers here! I'm not sure I need any help, original plan was for maybe 6... I'm WELL past that now! LOL But I will consider your suggestion

I have had this just a few times. Yes. It is the egg yolk. I have found that it is better to cull the baby than to let it suffer. Cleary they are in pain when this happens. They tend to "scream".

I also have found this usually happens if the baby was hatched out too soon. Either naturally or helped out of the shell too soon. That the cord was not twisted off properly. This is, be all means, just my opinion. I have no scientific prouf. Just experience. There are several humane ways to cull the baby if this what is right for you. PM me if you like. SO sorry.

Happy Official First Day of Spring Everyone!! Sure felt like spring out there, except for the clouds. Rain and snow mix the next two days. Yeah that's about right for Wi in spring. Hello to all that are new! Glad to read that everyone's hatchs are going ok. BL4 that party doesn't see right to me either. Why an overnight? Weird.
All is well here. Out of my 17 girls 4 are broody. Anyone need a broody

That's what I get for having all cochins. Wed is lockdown here and I'm excited. Had a temp spike on Sat, but caught it right away and solved it. I figure the chicks must be making their own heat growing and that's why. Havent had a problem the whole time, then wow 104! Was only that high for a couple hours so hopefully no damage was done. Beautiful birds BCC. Terri- glad I have the right number. Ok have to go read about pheasants. Later

Holy Cow less than 24hrs and I had to read like 6 pages to catch up

BCC- If you just happened to have an extra or two of those I know a guy that would be REALLY interested....umm ME... LOL

Well hang in there with the up coming weather. Good Evening to all.

Hey Terri,

Can I get some of those blue duck eggs from you for my next hatch (setting 4-2)? Would love a small handful (4 or so) to try.
smile.png
They take 28 days, right? Would have to set them 3-26 to have them hatch with the chickens on the day before Easter so could run over Fri or Sat to pick some up. Do you know who is laying the blue eggs? I read somewhere that call duck eggs should be incubated on their sides for best results, any truth to this?

Question for Jim (when he gets back on the computer),

When you say you glue plug the holes at the bottom and tape the sides, leaving the 2 plugs open until the last 3 days...do you plug the 8 holes at the top, too, or do these stay open? Going to try the method you were talking about for this next round. Are the directions posted somewhere?

Feeling a bit better tonight, back to work tomorrow. Both boys are snot-nosed now, hooray, but at least everyone's fever is breaking.

No wiggles or peeps yet, but hoping for some in the next 2 days.

Good evening! Glad I didnt take off any winter protection for the gardens or chickens! I thought about taking down some wind protection today...maybe we arent supposed to get it as bad as you all up NOrth...have to ask DH the weatherman...he says mid 40s and 30s---T-storms...probably just rain for us then! GREAT--more mud! Exactly what I need...interviewed another potential client/family today another to do on Wednesday. You know what they say, "when it rains, it pores!" Pretty soon I will be working 7 days a week and then I'd NEVER get anything done on the farm!!!

OK--gotta type up recipes for work tomorrow---sweet dreams everyone! Keep those cute pics coming! I LOVE it! Terri O

ETA: ODrH--we posted At the same time the second time in one day!!! Too funny. Yes I will save all eggs that I get but she didnt lay today. I will save though and give whatever I get to you somehow. I have never done duck eggs so I cant answer the sideways question for you...glad you are feeling better. To bad your DH will have to deal with sick/crabby kids tomorrow!

Good luck at the Dr's office tomorrow Jim!

Hurley, The silkie chicks have settled in very nicely and are being the "big" brother and sister to the other chicks.
I wanted to ask, it is the White that is the roo right??

Sorry to hear you are sick, and Terri, thank you again for the tour, your time, and being able to meet your DH and the puppies!!

Now I have to find a call duck!!..

Oh can anyone tell me when I get the ducks out of QT... will they hang out with the geese?
Or will I have to make a pen for them outside so they learn to go into something at night...
Thx tons.
Carol

Hey Carol--my ducks do not hang out with the geese at all! I had guineas in with turkey poults and now they hang out together but not ducks and geese! They are really easy to herd into wherever you want though with two sticks...one in each hand. Once they do it a few times they should go in on their own. My geese even get off the road when I clap my hands and yell, "get off the ROAD!!!" Good luck! Terri O (PS) yes I am available tomorrow after 2:30.
