Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I'm just putting this out there for anyone thinking of getting chicks late winter/early spring.

In February I think I'm going to order Buff Silkies from Cackle Hatchery (the only one that has the fancy ones of those.) They have a 5 bird minimum and 15 birds are required to avoid a $20 small order fee. I want 3 lol.

I'm in Shawano County, toward Pella, and if anyone is interested in putting an order in together, I'd take care of having them shipped here. I'd be willing to meet halfway too to trade chicks for $$, within reason, like no more than an hour.

I dont like the five bird minimum or the hatcheries you have to have more than 10 birds. As i can only own 8 where i live and i already have a small established flock. I cant get any more chickens right now unfortunately.

I don't either, but I need new genes here as I've gone to the only breeder within an hour of me twice. She's got lots of lovely birds, but I don't even want to buy cousins accidentally. I've bought eggs on eBay three times and that worked well too, so I may just do that instead and peddle the ones I don't want.

Just inbreed them. I am a breeder and that’s what we all do. That’s how all breeds were created.

I suppose lots of people do, but over time, it can weaken them. These are silkies who already come with a propensity to have vitamin deficiencies, mareks, and wry neck, so I don't want to compound any issues or start seeing more problems.

Oh yeah, Silkies are full of issues because a lot of the breeders are newbies and don’t know how to select against certain bad traits. I agree, you definitely shouldn’t be inbreeding those since it would increase prevalence of the traits in the population. Too bad though, inbreeding does prevent Marek’s disease:

This was very interesting and informative. I like how she finished it.

I can't breed for resistance because none have had it, thank God. Other than seven years ago when someone gave us 3 silkies, I've never bought anything but eggs or day-old chicks. It can't be carried through the egg, so that's probably the safest way to do it to keep avoiding it.

When people come to buy my chicks, I have hand sanitizer out they must use. Here I was doing that so cocci wouldn't be spread to mine, but maybe I've been preventing more! 😊
