Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

What are they going for? We have a horse farm across the road that has a barn filled with them. They came here until I replaced all bird feeders with sunflower seeds. That makes cardinals, wrens, finches, chickadees, and several other kinds of wild birds happier too.

That got rid of them for a couple of years until the other day I found an old partial bag of bird seed in the basement. I thought I'd see if the chickens might like it so threw it in a pile near the coop. Big mistake! I wasn't even thinking. Now I have to try rake up what's left I guess.
They are going for the feed in the coop.
Because of the snow we got i have to put up the chicken wire again. We usally have bird feeder. The sparrows found a new house in our garage.

Try eliminate any bird seed as I obviously forgot to do. Sunflower seeds are cheaper in a 40# bag at TSC right now, sometimes Walmart is cheaper too so I check btwn the two. We also have a farmer out here that sells them in the fall.

I'd also try hanging a couple of thin strips of cloth over the door. I can't say I've tried that but I see how it could work. Birds would be scared of it, chickens would get used to it.

For the garage, I think I'd shut the door after dark, and go in at night with a fishing net.

Non of the food is outside. The wild bird feeders are in our front yard away from the coop. Ive found cds have helped some. Ill try the cloth. The garage they are getting in from a hole we have to seal. Then nesting up in the insulation.

I really hate them sparrows with a passion. The first years we lived here we didn't have a problem because the farm across the road was vacant. Then it got bought and filled with animals and the barn filled with sparrows. I sat out in the front yard in a lawn chair with a 20-gauge shotgun and got a few of them that started coming over to our place. Then I discovered the trick of replacing the bird feed with sunflower seeds and that did it. I don't know where they all were before that farm got bought as we never had them before that.

We had always had sparrow problems. They actually got into our attic. Then for a few years we had medium sized black birds i think they were starlings that scared them off. Now all the birds disappeared and the sparrows came back. Ill try the sunflower seeds.
We live in a small town surrounded by farms.

SOoo, I dont think I will gorw all yellow corn this year, though the price of all yellow seed went down couple dollars per 1000, I am surprised went down. think will try a different aug/sh2 sweet corn, maybe. Seed price seems pretty stable not much of rise as compared last couple years.
Anyway I buy seed from jordans in stpaul area, decent prices and delivery charges, but they dont sell real small amounts If anyone interested and grows big garden.

Now I want to eat sweet corn
:(

I watched a show on RFD recently about sweet corn varieties and the guy said that he had planted a variety that had the sweet and original taste. I think it was Kandy Korn.
Don't hold me to that though.
I'm sure whatever you plant it will be great and tasty!
My chickens prefer field corn as it grows out back and I can just go up and pick a few ears and throw it down to them. :D

there is soooo many varieties out there Kandy Korn is a HSE
H.S.E. = Heterozygous Sugary Enhancer (isolation desirable); 20-30% sugar content; tender
old standard varieties are 8 to 18 percent sugar

I grow mostly augmented
AuSh2 = Augmented Sh2 (needs isolation & warm soil temp.); 40-50% sugar; very tender; hold well in field

Where are you at approx? We'll be needing just a lb of corn so we sure wouldn't drive far for it. We have a farmer neighbor that gives us his field corn which is pretty good actually, but I'd like to try something different.
