Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

try drying them off with a hair dryer- we saved a chick that way when the light in the incubator burnt out sometime durning it's hatch.

Might just have rented out 2 of our apartments- one needs later than the other! Landlord will be happy. Probably should go move the feed out of my car and see how all the critters are doing. I think we have 1 white and 1 bronze tom turkey so far, boy do they complain when water and feed is low!

Have to have DH list the extra chicks out on craig's list tonight- they are running out of room in their dog crate and I don't have any bigger ones to transfer them too. Time to thin the numbers!

I learned something this moorning that I think is worth passing on.. I have a Reptitherm heat control thermometer with a sensor that hangs in the brooder.. I took the ceramic heater out and set it on the counter top.. I had been turned off and was cold to the touch.. I had the Reptitherm turned to the off position.. then I removen the sensor and just let it hang off the countertop.. guess what ?? there is no OFF on that thermometer control.. It is just way low.. so with the sensor hanging in the cool morning air, the light came on, (I didn't notice it) and the ceramic heater was activated.. I did notice the loud POP !!!! and smoke.... there is a perfect 4 inch diameter black burnt spot on the countertop.. all the way through the formica..

just a word of caution to those of you who might be using one of these Reptitherm 500..

Good Evening all !!

Well,

I'm way behind in reading again !!!!

Hopefully over the weekend I can catch up.

Anyway, is anyone going to the Shawno swap tomorrow, sat?

If so whatcha bringing? Don't know if I want to make the trip. Don't really need or want anything other then some different color guineas to add to my flock. I noticed Purely Poultry has some very unique looking colored guineas. Royal Purple, purple, chocolate and bunches of others.

Well, just sat down for a brief moment to check emails after cleaning out my silkie pens. Now on to the next chore or two or three or ................................... Take my pick, it's never ending. Guess I should get the mower started one of these days. The neighbor down the road has mowed two times already !!!! But what can I say they are half my age !!!!!

Oh and hubby and I are now pullorum testers. I need to get the antigen and a box. Does anyone have a recipe for making the box from scratch? I can't see paying a $100 + for a plastic box with a light bulb inside. Guess I just need the dimensions and ideas on what to use for the tray where you put the blood ?

Gotta go, so I can get back in and watch Shark Tank !!!

ISN'T KARMA GRAND!

My DD and DGD went out and found nada and then to a friend's house with permission and reaped 40 giant morels. They avg around four inches!

Hens & Roos, what kind of chicks do you have?
Holy Morels, Dooner! What a haul! So glad that you got some this season despite the rotten neighbor.
I am sooooo jealous!

Just talked to my vet who gives her chickens yogurt. I know that's been mentioned here before. What fun! The crazy birds go bananas for yogurt and splatter it everywhere. If I were so inclined I would give them a bath afterwards.....but, I'm not even slightly inclined.

Boy do I feel stupid !!! I was thinking the neighbors didn't have any morals for trespassing !!! Geezzzz !!

So now that I see what morels are, a type of mushroom right, I assume you eat them. What do they taste like and how do you prepare them? Where do they normally grow? I have 80 acres I can search if I know where to look !!!

Can you all tell I'm a city girl living in the country

Now that I've retired to my recliner to watch Shark Tank of course it's a rerun. Never fails when I actually get in the house on time for a show it's a rerun !!!

You could check wikipedia. I do know they really like growing at the base of dead elm trees when their bark falls off, or so I've heard. One year after the bark fell off one of our elms, we had a few morels growing under it. They are so good!!!!!!!!
There are many ways to make them. We sauteed them in butter with onions & garlic. Yummmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Celtic Druid called it right. People in Wi guard their morel locations like gold. Mothers day is about when they are ready. If you find one, you will generally find a few more closeby. We soak them inwater with lots of salt, there are little pill bugs that hide inside. Then I cut them in half, rinse, and let them drain. Check one more time for bugs then slowly fry in butter, maybe add a little cognac or brandy after the water cooks out and they start to fry. Soooooo goood, we look forward to this all year. We just ate a bunch. Check out the price in the store. Usually around $20 a pound, right? I will make some cream of mushroom soup with some button, portobella and morels this weekend and then dehydrate the rest. There is a false morel that is poisonous that looks like a morel on drugs. Their taste is unique, kind of like a good steak to me. NOT THE POISONESS ONES! The real ones, sorry

Hi, I am new here, and from Iron Ridge. Quick question. Does anyone know where I could get some quality Buff and Partridge Rocks? I have searched the breeds but am not coming up with much. I would like to find someone in Wisconsin.
Thanks for your help.
