Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

*wonders how long 10_is_enough's name will hold true...*

WELCOME to the state, to chickendom, to the thread! Hope to see pics of your new chicklin's soon!

Got the chickens rounded up so Cheryl can pick up her two hens without chasing over 5 acres (LOL) and got my mulberry tree planted. If I stare at it, will it grow faster? It is well away from the driveway, sidewalk, kids' play area, cars, etc., so hopefully I won't get hit with excessive berry staining. Dug up a red twig dogwood rogue shrub from my front flowerbed and moved him down to the property line to start filling in some gaps there.

Man, the irises are so pretty right now. Got some photos that I'll post in a bit.

Welcome 10 _is_enuf!
Let me introduce you to chicken math... perhaps one chick will pass, and you will then see a free ad some where OR a co-worker offers you a few adult chickens..
You can see where this is going right.. by the end of 2 months you have 15 or 17...and then you go to an auction or a swap and bring home 4 more...
Then you have some brooding, some in the garage and you are building or buying a second coop. LOL

I think my client has a mild fear issue with riding, he came off a horse he later had me sell last year, and hadn't been back on since. So today was a big day...his very steady/trustworthy/broke to death horse moved a little and he was 'whoa, whoa whoa!!' and we only rode around his big yard, he didn't want to ride in the trees, he didn't want to ride around the hay field, even though he has a grass/dirt road in it and heavily mowed sections around the perimeter.
So I offered pointers and talked about mundane things pertaining to him to get him to relax.
We are riding again next sunday so we shall see.
DH and I are riding this evening, probably the only time till mid summer or early fall with his schedule and mine.
Any one want to come riding?? I just can't get him out ... and he has his own horse...

Any way.. have a great one.. I am off to take a nap.

Beautiful Afternoon All... Sorry Frizzler about the attack. Don't know either how high the fence is? Sounds like a dog attack.
If you want to trap weasels. It works well to use the wooden rat traps. Place the trap in the verticle position with the baited end about 4 to 6 inches above the ground. Simple screw or nail works. Attach it to a corner post or tree or corner or a building. Bait with chicken or meat. The weasel will stand on its hind legs to get at the bait. Be sure the meat won'tpull off to easy....good Luck!

Keep cool Doc....plenty of watermellon consumed here! The flock loves the leftovers.

Glad folks are meeting and having fun.

Welcome 10 is a good start... come to the bash we are having the end of the month...we'll teach you chicken math...hands on!

I should go get the mato cages on... Maybe...I'm lazy. Love doing nothing. I know how to do that!

Good Afternoon,

Frizzler I'm so sorry to hear about your dead Chickens! I had a nightmare last night that someone came over and butchered some of my favorites! These girls are my pets and I love them dearly, so I can just imagine how you feel:(

Hurley, I'm an amateur Photographer and adored all your photos...just lovely! I need to get out my camera and take some photos of my Marans. I also need to get in my garden. I've been so busy that it just hasn't happened.

Yesterday was the Badger Poultry Show. The location is certainly one of the most beautiful sections of Wisconsin - the "Hill Country". It seemed to take forever to get there and we arrived right at noon. A very nice young man took us under his wing (sorry about the pun:)) and walked us around. We loved looking at all the different breeds, most of whom we've only seen in photos. I found several Salmon Favorelles and had a chance to talk to two of the breeders. There was nothing there I wanted to buy. "Must Love Hens" we looked for you and traced down where the Nutrena booth was set up. We now understand why you had to leave early. I love "Barnevelders" and am very surprised no one was interested!

10 is Enough a warm welcome! I am also a Newbieand I said 8 maximum...believe me Chickens are addictive

We were up to 12 and the order we put in and CANCELLED from "Chickens For Backyards" came anyway! Thank god we were home and able to rush over and pick up the Babies. That was almost a month ago, and even though we lost 3 of the 12 they are doing great. So we went from mostly Marans and two Swedish Flower Hens to: 1 Black Astralorp, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Salmon Favorelle (LOVE HER), 2 Welsummers, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 2 Buff Orpingtons:) ow we need a third coop. I'll send photos.

Love the flower pics!

Well, little miss broody will get somfertileal eggtomorrowow! Found a guy close by I can get 8 from. Now, any ideas on how to make the switch? I can't run to the coop all the time to hope to catch her off the nest. And grrrr, they will be due to hatch bash weekend!

Yup TO I HAD to go cut. It was bothering me. Got everything cut and hauled in that didn't need to be split. Nice dry trees so only the ones that won't fit thru the stove door to split. Think it will almost fill the first inside row.

And then I hoed the weeds in the mater garden. Next year going to build boxes for them, don't like the soil in there. And then I hand weeded the entire big garden, looks nice! And then I had lunch! And then I mowed the yard. And then, NO AND THEN! nonsuch that's my favorite part of the state! Have fam down there and have spent a lot time sittin on a porch watchin the real world go by. Bigz, told L the other day to either get me some orange soda for floats or a watermellon if they weren't to pricey. Got the soda now I want watermellon

Well on our way back home now-past Johnson Creek, waved as we drove through CD's town on the way to Hurley's to pick up the 2 Blue Marans girls from her. Got some things done for my parents while we were there- DH brought his chain saw and cut down several small trees that my Dad wanted gone, got my marion berry plants(gave a couple to Hurley) so they will need to be planted yet today. Felt bad when we got down by my parents and saw all that needs to be done around the outside that he can't do anymore. The neighbor cuts the grass for them but there needs to be trimming done. Told my mom we would come back and help him some more but it will probably be in July. They were happy to see the kids!

The boys say huge thanks for the rice crispies treats. Thomas is naming each sprinkle color before he eats it. Soon as the boys finish their halves of the treat, it's "ott-siye" to help momma plant the black berry plants. Think that's a great time for a popsicle for the boys. OUTside.

nonsuch-I'm sorry I missed you! I ran into a few newbies at the show and I asked them all if they were you!! There are always more shows so I'm sure we'll see each other at one point!! I have some Barnies that I can part with if your interested!

They are only 2 month old pullets!!

So the dh and I went to the Goodwill today to see if you could find some glass jars for storing dried beans and such. So while there I decided to check out the jeans and found that the pink tagged items were 50% off. I found 5 pairs of jeans all $4.99- 4 of which were pink tagged so those were $2.49 each!! One pair was brand new so I hope those fit!! I got 5 pairs of jeans for $15!!! And the coolest part was dh found a big bag if 6 jars....he showed the to me and I said: "Wow, those are old time Ball jars. They are worth some money even though the rubber gaskets are gone" He bought them and came home to look up what they are going for on ebay....$7 each. We got all 6 for $1.99!!! Whooo Hooo!! I guess sorta kinda paying attention to Mom and Dad's antique collecting fetish finally paid off!!!!

Well off to get the grill goin'! Grilled chicken here I come!! Yummmmm!!!!
