Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,, had to reply on a couple of posts so I wouldn't forget..

The quail are still hatching,, we have 30 out of 36 so far.. I just can't get over how tiny they are.. I thought guineas were small, but they are giants compared to the quail.. LOL and they all look alike.. Annie tells me every time I hold one,,; don't let it get away, or we will never catch it..

I am going to get the motor running today even if I have to hire someone to help me..

the corn is up already.. I was wondering if the piece I made for the 2-row planter was going to work or not.. IT WORKED !!!!! last year only one side of the planter worked.. this year there is corn in every row.. 16 ea 300-foot rows.. 2 pounds of seed.. Now I hope the 2-row cultivator is spaced right for the rows.. I live my life in one suspense after another,,, LOL

I have 48 guineas eggs to transfer to the hatcher for Marlene the "guinea lady".. then I have about 30 more eggs to set for her..

I better get off of here and onto that project..

laters,,, ..............jiminwisc..........

edit: DrH,, I llike lots of onions and some green peppers in my BBQ's.. just sayin' ... I am a Tobasco type O" guy, but not in the Q"s.. in Chili,, si...

Jim what kind of quail are you hatching? I've been looking for a couple more females. I have Coturnix Quail. Just wondering if you are looking to part with a couple. Right now I have 4 and 4. Not good numbers. Looking to get rid of the extra boys too, if anyone is interested.

Hi again.. beckyschicks.. I hatched Coturnix quail.. I cannot tell one from the other, much less what sex they are.. LOL I bought these eggs I don't even know how to spell Coturnix,, I just copied what you wrote.. I am planning to run some of these through the plucker when they are fully grown.. sure I would part with some of them.. I want to keep a few for future eggs, too.. what is a good ratio for hens to roos ??

I got the motor started... You know what the old addage is,,: "when all else fails, read the instructions." he!!, I didnt know there was an ON/OFF switch on there !!!! LOL turned it "ON" and it was running on one pull...

What is it with men about reading instructions? Or asking for directions, for that matter? Which aches worse, the pride or the shoulder?

Good wet morning! I have been waiting for it to stop pouring long enough to get out and let out the birds...so they can get a shower!

I decided to open 2 tabs cause I am so far behind so I will comment as I catch up! Hmmm--already forgot the first thing I was going to comment on! Something about a temp shower I think...as WHERE were you DrH when my DH was putting out shower in? THe kids were so sick of the tub so he cobbled something together...I am so glad that one of my clients is so proud of the shower her BIL built she always askes me if I wasnt to take a shower at her place! I take her up on it frequently! I think she just wants the company...I cant stink that bad!

:sick

Celtic--thanks for the link on the article! Oh yeah BL4 you can use regular Hersheys Baking cocoa...I do. That is, if yours isnt contaminated with flour!
old.gif
I am so tired of the Celiac business! Having to ask so many questions every time I want to eat something is wearing on me! (be prepared....) I am also of the opinion that the production breeds tend to burn out after a couple of really strong years...maybe like menopause?
bun.gif
You also start to get problems like internal laying and ascites. I have done all that with the production flock I have. I am really glad when the folks comeout from Milwaukee that LOVE spent hens and give me $3 each for them! I wish I had a long list of PAYING customers too...dozens and dozens of eggs in the fridge that mostly get given away or cooked and fed to various critters!
Kee-what kind of Muskovy are you looking for? I have 3 here that are very tame--they were going to the bash but if nobody wants them and they are what you want they are yours. My daughter raised them at the daycare center so they are way too tame to live here!
French Toast--you are so lucky your DH shares your obsession with chickens and birds...mine has told me that my birds are starting to take over the house AGAIN! He is barely tolerant of them...I suppose when you add the cats, dogs and other species it is a bit much....right Carol?
hide.gif
Oh yeah, I believe people have cured the wry neck problem giving baby poly-vi-sol W/O iron. I dont know about using the resulting bird for breeding though. It seems to me that those that have it have a problem utilizing vitamins in their food if all the rest are fine and might pass that to their offspring. (just my opinion)
Oh Stacykins----you are EVIL-I say it twice--EVIL!!! THose are some cute chicks....oh how I HATE chicken math!
Where getting closer to not liking each other this weekend!

Shame on you DrH!

Unless you are planning to change a lot I will still like you...AND dont forget the big hug on it's way!

Can you tell I'm excited!!
Now you guys won't be able to get rid of me. Oh and now I can give my house that deep cleaning I've been wanting to do.
Talk to everyone later!

So Becky...that means you are riding home with me from the bash right? I have many horses for us to ride and my house can surely use a deep cleaning too!

It will be fun!! I promise!

Cind--you can transplant asparagus when it is frondy if it is the little ones. THose are from seed that was left on the plant and it sprouted. It wont produce for a few years but it will take. THis is how I got my patch when my crowns didnt work. Just took seed plants from my friend with a ginormous patch!
Jim--that is exactly what I was thinking about SW's "new friend" We must be more alike than we realize....oh oh--must be because since we have been living together in the various coops we have grown alike? Yeah,,,that's it...probably....
Yup...directions are a good thing! On those quail I believe a good ratio is 5-7 girls to one boy.
I have some too becky from SF but I dont know what they are either...

Man! I am finally thru all the posts and my responses...we have got to stop this guys.....nothing is getting done on our farms at all!

At least those of us that get hooked on here! OK--I am going out...looks like the downpours are finished for the meantime--those birdies need to get out! Later all--have a fantastic day! Terri O

ETA: about the banner...I have been comunicating with support and they said to contact msbear--she has replied that she has not gotten it either for their event which was last weekend; she will overnight it to me if she gets it. I have also recontacted support to see if they have another suggestion...maybe we can have the kids cut and color big letters for a sign?

Hey Jim, yeah they are hard to sex. Wait 8 weeks and the ones that crow are boys. LOL As far as ratio; I've read 1 to 6 or more hens. They can be persistant buggers and will keep going and going. The more girls the better. With chickens a boy can be content with a couple girls and not over do it, but these guys will just keep going. I finally had to seperate the girls from my boy, because of bald heads. The boys will even mount each other. From what I have heard they are good eating. Go to the quail section and there is a sticky on top that has great pictures of each color and how to sex them. The only ones you can't feather sex are the whites. If you willing to part with a couple, bring some this weekend and we can trade for something or I can give you some cash for them. Oh and the girls will start laying eggs at 8 weeks, everyday, 365 days a year, for the rest of their lives. They might slow down in the second or third year, but you will still get more eggs with them then with some kinds of chickens. The eggs are good, but small. Talk to you soon. Becky

TO- The riding might be fun, but cleaning never is. I still haven't done my own house. To busy enjoying being on here. LOL

I agree, there is entirely too much gabbing going on.. I have work to do..
Becky,,, How many quail should I bring along? (unsexed) remember, they will be only 4 days old.. I do not want to trade with anybody for anything.. I am trying to cut back on my numbers, remember?? I currently have well over 200 various birds to get rid of this summer..
so do you think that the 25 guineas and 12 turkeys I set today will help that matter ?? LOL

I went out and pulled on the tiller motor again.. that on/off switch is amazing !!!! LOL

Hi folks! To tired to try to catch up on everything at the moment. Hope everyone is well... condolences, congratulations and welcome as it may apply.

Didn't even make it through one cup of coffee this morning before I was driving DH to Madison Va hospital... his heart again. Third time since last fall, 4th time in 10 years (late sept, angioplasty, first part of year ballon treatment) and probably another angioplasty today or tomorrow. Loved the Cardiologist Fellow who interviewed him, first to ever tell him if he doesn't quit smoking and take ALL the meds they give him he won't be around much longer. Said if he complies he has a good chance of being around for a long time yet. Hopefully he'll get it this time.

So, looks like this year I'll be passing on the bash
hit.gif
which I was so looking forward to. Would have been nice to meet you all in person, but guess that will just have to wait until next year.

Hope you all are having a great day.

Off to take care of some things that need attention.

Deb
