Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

It took the internet darn long enough.. WOW.. it kept timing out and not loading the reply section.
TO I can call Hurley and see if she can drop off one of the blue bantam aracaunas, if she isn't going to the Bash... while I am at your place.
Lovely weather we are having down here, the skies are dark and its windy out there.
I crashed a bit after 8, and slept till 6 something.
I have to get dogs fed, go feed client horses, get laundry taken care of, drop off donated items, meet with a person I know to go over feeding her horses for 4th of July weekend.
All of this noon.. so I better get a move on... LOL
I think I will do garlic pepper OR lemon pepper chicken tonight.
Laters all!

good morning, where to start? good news first.. final quail count.. 33 out of 36 hatched.. one is very weak and one died.. that is how it goes with the later hatched ones.. I was watching them in the TV last night.. they do have a mean streak, don't they?

I always wanted to try growing veggies hydroponically.. I am getting my wish.. I am just glad that the seeds sprouted and did not rot..

the corn is looking real good.. the rows are fairly straight. all look spaced equally.. the beans came up---in a corn row.. BIL had a mental glitch.. Annie was talking of transplanting the corn out of the beans.. I told her to just treat them like weeds. we have 16 ea 300 foot rows of corn.. I guess we can sacrifice 30 feet of one row.. she will still do whatever she wants..

I want to till up a little more ground and plant some squash.. can't do that until the ground dries.. I hope it will not be too far into the summer..

Brent, how far is Cllintonville from the Camp Road ? I am supposed to meet a lady there to sell her two pullets.. what is a good place on the North end to meet?

ave to drag out a few cdar planks and plane them for the planting box. If I get a break in the rain today, I might get that done..

this rain makes for a whole different life style, eh?

........jiminwisc...........

I just rec'd this on a different group.. Rod is one of my mentors.. He was raised on a commercial chicken farm in Minn. and knows a lot.. we do not always agree, but I will never argue with him.. he is usually right, in the end..

The Sil Go Links, Red Legs and the Rhode Island Reds that Central Hatchery handles
will all outdo the Black Australorps. The Sil Go Links and red Legs will lay more eggs on less feed. The Rhode Island Reds will lay about the same amount of eggs per lb. of feed. The Sil Go Links and Red legs will lay more eggs per year and lay for more years. Rod

Hi to all you chatty Kathy's!

DK-I'm sorry to hear of your dh's troubles. The Madison VA has some really good cardiologists. My 84 year old neighbor goes to them and he has another cardio Doc as well. We actually got to the same facility but we see different docs! If you need a referal for a second opinion let me know. I hope he listens to the doc and takes care.

SF-Sorry to hear about the Drama Mama. That just sucks when you try to be nice or at least polite and people like her make something out of nothing.

Ok, so I know that there has been a topic being discussed about poor egg production recently. Poor egg production can be attributed to a lot of things, weather being one of the biggest factors. Another factor is stress . This can come in the form o af recurring predator, change in the coop dynamics, weather, or one of many other issues we may not take into consideration as being significant. My guess here would be weather since we have been without a whole lot of sun and it has been rather cool, then hot, then cool again.

Feed can also play a roll and protein (either too much or too little) can effect a hens lay cycle. The best thing to do here is research the brand you are feeding. There are a few reasons for this. One is to find the "available" protein. Meaning what is the is the actual digestable protein amount of the feed. Feed labels list protein as "crude". Crude protein is an old old term and is not available or actual protein the animal gets. Crude protein is listed as a percentage but the actual digestable protein the birds are getting is lower. So for example, we will take ficticious Brand X that lists its protein as Crude protein of 22%. This means that the actual protein the animal is getting is only 18-20%.
The other thing to look for are protein sources. You ideally want "named" sources as opposed to "grain source" or "grain fines" or other vague names. Named sources such a soy meal or whole corn or wheat meal are in the feed and the feed has been formulated, tested, and ingredient percentages listed with those ingredients in it. This is usually a good indication of a "closed" formula feed. Meaning that the formula has been tested with those ingredients in the feed and the ingredients to get to the listed protein level cannot be substituted or changed
(usually to make the feed cheaper to make.) A feed with vague names usually indicates an "open" formula where upon the company can change protein sources around to keep the cost down. As long as the protein percentage is at the listed level it does not matter whether that source is from. Each grain has it's own type of protein "matrix" and each are different levels. Open formulas can be changed frequently and thus you hens may not be getting a "protein" stable diet. That protein instability can effect laying since in essence you are feeding a different feed every time you feed your birds.
Also look for brands that include probiotics. These help the hens digestion and enable them to get more nutrition from the feed that they consume. You can also add probiotics to their feed. Farm and Fleet carries one called Probios. Its a decent price and a powder that can be used on pretty much any animal.

So, anywho, not much to report here. I'm setting up a little enclosure for Buzzy and Crew in the Hen Pen today. So they can finally get out of the basement! Winston has taken to crowing every time we talk on the phone.....worthless chicken....

Oh yes....Emma the Light Cornish might have decided to go broody. She moved an egg I didn't get a chance to pick up Wednesday morning, from the corner where it was sitting. She moved it to the middle of their cage and so far has sat on it all day yesterday and was still on it this morning. I saw her sitting in the middle of their pen yesterday morning and I though she was laying her egg since nest boxes are apparently so passe . So yesterday afternoon she was still there and I thought "Man! She is lazy! Well, I'll just collect the eggs." Then I was: " Wait a minute! Where is the big egg?!?" At this point she got up to get a drink and I saw the egg. I was like "Oh my gosh! Is she sitting on an egg??!!!? But she is not cranky! Maybe she is not done laying yet" I guess I'm a huge softie, so I left her with her egg thinking that if she is broody she might just think it's a passing fancy-or she is still trying to lay her egg. I told my dh that Emma might be broody. He told me: 'You know, you'll drive clear across the country to get a fertile batch of eggs, she'll set on them for the 21 days, then hatch A (1) chick which she'll then abandon. Then you'll be stuck with one chick-again. That is the ultimate in Worthless Chicken Tricks. That might even beat out the worthless chicken trick of egg eating.....but not by much!" Then he calmly brought up Jet "Remember Jet?". Ah, Jet, my little black mutt bantam hen that went missing but reappeared 21 days later running in terror from a brood of chicks she hatched. I managed to catch one chick before the rest were eaten by the other hens....Stupid chicken.

Anyway, back to Emma.... today she was still on the egg. She got up to eat a little and cranked at Violet. This is nothing new since she always cranks at Violet. I'll go back out when I'm done here to assess the situation. With my luck, I have a broody Cornish.

Well, I'd best be off.....chat soon!

Drippy Morning All.... Jim, Clintonville is prolly about 4 miles once you go past the camp turnoff balloons. If you go straight through the stop lights, the building centers rear parking lot with a childrens play house on display for sale there on your left....plenty of room to park, meet, swap and head back to the North. If they are familiar with the area....have them stop at camp and save yourself 8 miles.

Just got back from camp...plenty of coffee and filters. I'm gonna be there at noon tomorrow to turn the hot water heater and fridge on. In case someone would get lost on their way, the camp phone is 715-754-4900. You could change your user name to EL-LOSTO
