My hands are aching cause I pulled a bunch of stinging nettle tonight getting my mink turned rabbit, turned quail pen unearthed! THen I decided it was too late to build something to set it up on so they are in the basement in my old degu cage turned on it's side. THey are really liking the extra space to try out their wings! Hey--no one ever answered me...can you free range quail? Maybe I should ask on the quail board? LOL--no, you all know everything!

I just looked at my fair entries due Friday morning...all I can say is "oh oh!" I have a ton of stuff to do...maybe I will forego weeding tomorrow and get to canning! I have to make a bunch of jellies and jams 3 sauces and a pie! AAck! Also give chickens a bath---and ducks! I have nothing caught up either...they may just end up making $$ on my cage fees....I only spend $7 to enter so that's not too bad.

The torts are spending the night in the tort house outside, It is predator proof so I am not worried. I hate that I am so busy right now so I cant spend too much time with them. I did sit out in the garden for a while this evening and watched them walking around and FINALLY sampling some of the plants that I have in there specifically for them! For whomever asked...the foam box they are in in the last pic is about 8x11; so they are not real big. They wont get much bigger...not like a Sulcata! (which I would definitely have if I lived in AZ!

Too tired to go through all the posts again! I read most of them earlier, now I forgot most of what I read.

Nice pics! Glad you liked Duke. Not sure if he will make next years bash.... he's really, really old for a big dog.

BigZ.... If I leave my patio door open my girls come right in too! They usually head for the dog bowel!

I saw 6 chicks out of 9 eggs at roost time. 1 looked like it was zipped and just had to get the shell off. She went back on the nest before I got a good look at the other 2. So far it looks like she'll be a good mom! She had 2 out "scratching" when I came in.

I have the brooder box almost done (wanted it done last week

). It will slip right into the space I have her in now. Tomorrow night after roost time I can pick up the whole box her nest is in and put it in the brooder. What is there now is not chick safe... the brooder box will be. I just need to put the doors and wire on.

Best part is.... I got to play with my new TOYS!!!

The really cool miter saw even has a laser guide!!

My 2nd son was here when I tried it out ..... he's sooo jealous! hehehe If you saw this thing you would be too! Oh... the table saw is OK too.

good morning, just a quick note before hitting the hay..

TO.. foxes smell somewhat like skunks.. only more musty, a skunk is more sickening sweet..

I just read four pages.. had a lot of comments to make, now can't think of even one..

OH yeah, quail, TO.. they do not free range well,.. however, I did read once that you can get them to come to a trap box with one quail in it as "bait".. I had a button quail get out of the pen.. He did hang around the pen for a day or two.. and then he was gone.. we tried to catch him, but he spooked at too great a distance to get a net on him..

maybe if you have a fenced in area to try them out in.. If they go to the coop at night, then free range them.. I really think it would be quite difficult to train them.. I had one that spent the whole winter uncaged in the chicken coop.. that one got very tame and would fly up and sit on my hand for something to eat.. as a group I think they stay too wild..

Another Beautiful Morning All! It's offical I can't keep up. No way no how! [Wiz of Oz] TO glad the Torts made it safe and sound! Shhh. Hope you get rid of that pred too. Cind congrats on the hatch! Bigz really nice lookin spoiled birds there! CC we were laughing about Steve on the way home. The pic you painted was that he didn't have much interest in the birds but boy once he started talking about them the cat was out of the bag.

I guess I stand out in a crowd even when I'm hiding. But I'm cursed with a personality that demands that I'm the center of attention. I blame my parents.

Need to get in the woods earlier today. Got interupted by the BFF telling me that he was starting his rumage sale yesterday and that I'd better get the rest of my good junk over there. By the time I got back it was too hot to get back to it. Need to replant the spinach after closer inspection it's all bolted. Thinking of a jail term for the kids again only one egg yesterday. Only got 5 while being gone.

Morning all!

Just thought I'd add to the chatter before I get my chores started.

TO-I agree with Jim. Quail don't free range. The big quail and pheasant farms have their birds in huge aviaries or flight pens as they call them. I mean HUGE. Like acres. Once quail are out they are usually gone with the wind [Gone with the Wind---Ha! take that Dr H!

] Anywho.....that is not to say you can free range them, you just need to create a completely enclosed fly pen that they can roam in but not get out of. Buzzy is rather the exception on pheasants as she was an only chick and hand raised, she is not afraid of people or dogs but I'd still keep her in a pen. Because, after all, when you get down to it, she is a pheasant and will fly away.
Also, good luck with the fair entries! Hey, if you plan on canning or jamming again, can I come and learn how and "help"?Please!!!! It's been many many years since I've canned and I need a refresher!

CC-I was good! I did not fire up that bator! I did have that moment of "gee what if" and "Wow, I really am a horrible person", but nope! I did not hit the on button. I just tossed the eggs that Emma kicked to the curb. Now she has a managable number and I won't have to brood chicks. Which in this house I'd only have one hatch then be scrambling to find some day olds to be friends with the one that hatched.

Bigz-Love your girls! Brahmas are so sweet! Mine used to great me at the gate when I'd home from work. I'd get all sorts of chicken complaints until I managed to kick with a tidbit!

Carol-hope your feeling better! You take it easy and drink lots of water. It's going to be hot today, hotter tomorrow, and in the 90's by friday!

Well, I've gotta get the critters taken care of and make sure I have enough frozen water jugs for the rabbits for the next few days!

Yes much to my dismay and spending an hour at the DMV and paying 7 dollars (not THAT bad) I got new plates, stickers and registration.

Besides we are running low on the ones everyone likes. DS(9) just loves apple jelly and has to be reminded not to eat half a jar(half pint size) on 1 piece of toast!

Have the duct cleaners here this am so we'll be sitting around for a few hours until they are finished- forgot how many vents we actually have here and DH had early morning appontments so that left me with the kids to move things out of the way

didn't get it done last night as DD's fastpitch softball game didn't go so well- the other team beat them but I guess the other team wasn't showing good sportmanship either and our kids overheard them making fun of our players

On a better note DS(9)'s team won their game last night in a tie breaker so he was happy and DS(6) plays T-ball so everyone wins!

Off to feed the turkeys and check waters- turkeys act like they are starving if the feeder goes empty for 2 minutes

Morning All.
I am still a bit dizzy but have to get laundry out and starting to dry. Then off to drop off eggs to a neighbor.. I have ..WAY too many.
Then off to see the local constabulary to get my warning ticket taken care of.

SO how can you tame down a chick that has been in a brooder box, then put into a coop in a brooder area?? But is not tame?
I raised up 2 salmon favorelles, and one is going to this lady who wants it for her back yard in Madison...
I didn't know HOW tame her others are... so how can I tame this one down??
