Yeah Elaine... I think that was my friend that took them. Was it a katie? She was so excited to find young roosters to grow up with her gals. Her roo was a big old meanie that attacked her and her little girl.
Still praying that my little EE is a gal. She is 18 weeks and her comb is as red as can be and has been for about 3 weeks, but some of those feathers on her tail still keep me guessing. Really wanted those blue eggs though... no guarantees but hoping.

Beautiful Morning once Again! ODr.H you have quite the mix there think it's really cool! Duck playdate.

Cind hope your wrist comes around soon! CC that's pretty weird about the balloon think if it happened to me I'd go out there and hand them a bill for all the damages. I was looking around a bit yesterday and the wild bluberries, black raspberries, and the grapes are all doing very well. Haven't made grape jelly for 2 years. When I first started taking fish oil I burped it up too but after awhile it quit doing it to me.

Jim I hope your hatching improves! Decided that I need one more load of gravel on the trailer, gonna fill in L's parking spot otherwise it's a mud hole.

Well, here is some good news!

http://www.fox11online.com/dpp/news/local/new-london-man-rescued-after-ultralight-aircraft-crash

Glad the guy is ok.

Celt, I agree with Dr.H. I would give that guy a bill.

Glad to hear the canning class went well. Personally I freeze the berries until it is much cooler out to do the jelly and jam making. Kudos to you for canning on such a warm day!

Late start this morning; I was up half the night due to dreams, people walking by making noise, and a splitting headache/sinus issues...... ugh I look like the walking dead today. I have people coming over this afternoon too!

Sounds like the coffee is finished........ I'll let you all know if I have July 4th ducklings....

BTW, I do love all the pics of the different coops and greenhouses! I am so jealous!

good morning , the last pea chick is still alive.. I held it for a couple of hours last night to help it get it's equilibriam straightened out.. It seemed to help.. He still tips over, but now he is not content to just lie there..
it is wierd, these pea chicks are born with wing flight feathers already.. His chirp is a mellow sound, and it actually sounds like "chirp"..
I was never fond of peacocks before, but I am tempted to tell Brian that all of them died or did not hatch, and keep this little guy.. LOL Then I remember how they sound after they grow up,, Brian, come get this thing !!!!!!!

No rain last night, so I guess I will be loading the barrel up and hauling water to the new plants.. I like doing that .. It looks like I am busy, while I am actually really taking it easy.. Then I can con Annie into doing some of my other chores because I am so busy.. LOL

well I'm off to see what the day brings.. I never have to plan my days, things just happen that demand my attention..

I might start up the lawn mower for the first time today.. the birds are keeping the grass around the yard short, but they skip the weeds..

Ok, you chicken experts, I have a problem that I need help with.

I have a 2 year old production red with a swollen abdomen. I put on a glove & felt up inside her vent. I did not feel any eggs, but none of my girls have been laying for a few months. (I switched to Layena, big mistake, & had soft shell issues, then no shells, then no eggs. I did find one egg in the box a few days ago, flat as a pancake, so someone is still laying occasionally). Anyway, it appears that her intestines are swollen & she is pretty warm on her undercarriage. She doesn't want to jump up onto a perch or down off it either. She is still eating & drinks alot, & still seems relatively normal as far as activity goes, but she is slower than usual. I haven't noticed any difference in her color & her eyes are bright, with no signs of any respiratory issues. She has had some watery diarhhea though. I put a piece of cardboard under her last night on her roost, & there were 2 watery stools & 3 or 4 normal looking ones.

I was researching & found that it might possibly be Egg Yolk Peritonitis, & "This can affect production bred hens at about 2 year of age", which fits my gal. What do you think? I assumed (bad thing to do, I know), that it wasn't egg binding because I couldn't feel anything up there, but could it still be that? Or do you think it might be worms? I sent this to a friend & he thought it might be 'water belly' aka ascites, but that sounds like it is a problem common to young broilers, where their hearts weaken from the fast weight gain. My gal hasn't seemed to have gained or lost any weight, other than the swelling.

Last weekend, we expanded the chicken run so the girls could have access to more grass & weeds. That was Sunday. My hen started to seem swollen on maybe Friday. Could it have been that she ate something? All the rest of my birds seem 100% normal so far.

What do you all think? Presently, I have her in with the rabbits & she has her layer ration, some medicated chick crumble, a little scratch and lots of cold water with some bird vitamins in it. She seems to be acting normally other than the swelling, so I'm kinda stumped. Today will be the 3rd day she has been in this area in these conditions.

Good Morning all, Is still morning when I started typing (11:55am)

Jvls1942, I talked to the guy who I got my peacocks from and asked him about hatching peachicks. He said they that 28-30 days. The temp & humidity are the same. I told him that your chicks were a bit weak and he offered these suggestions:
He said if the eggs were a bit on the older side say a week, they will be weaker. He said the fresher the better. He said alot of the time people will hold on to the eggs while they collect them one at a time and the first ones can be on the older side thus causing these kind of problems. Plus he said with the weather being so warm the eggs can start to develop while you are holding them which would explain some hatching a few days before they are due. Then he said that if they do start to develope and aren't put in the bator of course the started embryos will die before they even make it to the bator, again, no hatch.
That's all he could offer, basically he said they should ideally be put in the bator the day after they are layed. He hatches out quite a few eggs so I think he know what he is doing. It would be hard to not hold off on putting them in if you only have a few birds laying though.
Oh and I hear ya on the not making plans everyday !!! Even if I do make plans Poop happens and those things don't get done anyway. Plus after feeding and watering all the animals I feel like I've put in a day and a halfs worth of work. One thing on my list for the last two months is making nipple waterers. (Now just need to find the small box they came in !!!

) That will save me tons of time each day !!

Happy Belated Birthday Trixie !!! You and Butt dog (Buttons) are the same age. We figure her BD is about August 1st give or take.
We went to the town of Monico's fireworks last night. VERY nice for a small town. As you drive by if you blink you'll never know you went thru town. Anyway Butt Dog came with. She's no Chicken

Celtic, I'd put a sign up "BALLOON RIDES $50", Collect the money, then dash into the house and let those guys deal with the line of people waiting for a ride !!!

Sorry to hear about your hen. Could be tons of things !! Darn Chickens !!

Sounds like you're doing a good job keeping her comfortable. Do you have any probios powder? If so add some of that to her food or water. Or better yet if you have some plain yogurt stir some of that into it and give her that. Never hurts to get some good healthy bacteria into her gut.

As far at the medicated chick starter, it really isn't "medicated". All it really does is prevent the obsorption of certain vitamins which then allows the chicks to build up a resistence to Coccidiosus (sp). Normally adult birds already have built up resistence to it so it most likely isn't that. Of course there are different strains they can get if say you bring in new birds that have a different strain in there poop. So if that is the case (Cocci) medicated chick feed will not cure it, you will need to get corrid, either powder or liquid at Fleet Farm or Farm & Fleet down by you. I doubt it is Cocci though. No bloody poop right, although don't always have to have blood for cocci.

Also, some of the vitamins have the electrolytes in them which would be good for her if she does indeed have diarhea, but that said a chicken has different kind of droppings in the day that are all normal, but don't ask me what they are suppose to look like, I can't answer that, all I know is one is alot stinkier then the others
lau.gif

I would offer her free choice calcium just in case. Or if you save your egg shells, bake them and pulverize them and add to her food just in case she needs more calcium.

So now that I've given you some ideas that are probably only just that maybe someone else can jump in and help figure it out !!

Good luck with her

Celtic Chick you could post on Emergencies. There is usually awesome help there immediately and sometimes it takes a while, but really knowledgable people. Is her bellie swollen tight skin? Is it hot? What is her temperature? The diarhea could be just a cooling mechanism in this hot weather. That is normal. But I say could.
I read something in BackyardPoultry mag about egg laying apperatis (sp?) infection and the Answer man(thats his name) said to put a betadine solution in the vent. But that would be a shot in the dark I think. But I dont think it would hurt.

Good morning! Waiting for the tester here...had a NICE surprise when I went out for chores! Looky what I found:

THought I would treat you all to a view of the spurs on Goldie....check these out: (yes she is a hen and a good later too!)
