Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

The hen with the swollen belly sounds just like one of my P reds at that age. I ended up drawing off 30cc of fluid every other day. Not sure if she made it or not as I never found a dead one and they all look the same! It is very common. You can do a search for it. It looked like her belly was a balloon it was so tight! Happy Independence Day everybody!!

Hurly and CC- I had a little Frizzle roo (Curly) many years ago that lives with the LF hens. He would "sneak attack" unsuspecting hens and try to breed them. They'd toss him off like any good bronco would then beat the snot out of him! He knew very escape route in the yard! It was hilarious! He never gave up and was actually a dominant little dude plus he had 1/4 of an acre to run and hide on!

Winston's a little different though. He is not terribly to dominant and the hens I have now just view him as an item on the menu! The worst of the lot are the pullets he grew up with! So, I have him in a separate area and he is lonely for a friend. I figured a nice little hen more his size might be better for him to keep happy. He loves to "cut a feather" to me and he calls me over to feed me and he tries to get me to eat but picking in his feeder.

CC-I will look into the Belgium Anthwerp. That might just be the ticket for Winny the Roo.!
On your Prod Red with the swollen belly, it sounds like Water Belly but with Water Belly, they breath hard, turn blue and then die-it happens really fast though. It's caused by being housed in over heated stale air and happens usually in meat chickens. Since she has had this for a few days, I doubt Water Belly is what it is.
She could just have a form enterititis (sp) and Sulmet helps treat this or a shot of Baytrl if you can get it. HTH

TO-cute duckies!!!

Happy Birthday Trixie!

Ok I'd better get gone.....We planted one Peach and we need to plant the other one. It's nice looking out in the part of the yard that is fastly becoming the Orchard and seeing all the neat trees that will give me yummy fruit in a few years!!

I also need to vacuum out our pellet grill and give it a good scrub for diner tonight! We are having good old fashioned All American Hamburgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, and baked beans!

Have a great 4th everyone!

FT, your peacock friend is probably correct about the people collecting eggs for too long before setting them.. that happens to a lot of eggs that people bring to me..

I am between barrels.. taking a lemonade break.. letting the water warm a bit to prevent shocking the plants with ice cold water..

stopped the turner in bator #1 again.. July 4 guinea eggs pipping right on time....... going to move 41 keets out to the guinea pen brooder today....

FT, I am planning on going to Elcho.. as long as nothing comes up to prevent it.. I had not thought of taking anything to sell.. But now that you brought it up,,,maybe I will take some Americaunas and Guineas.. maybe sell enough to pay for my gas, eh?? maybe will have some eating/fertile chicken eggs also...??

..........jiminwisc..........

Thank you everyone who has gotten ducks from me, for posting pictures of my babies! I know they are not mine any longer but it is still great to see how they are doing!

Thanks for wishing my dog happy birthday; she is such a sweetheart!

No external pipping yet on the calls.... I hope we manage to hatch a few more out. If this nest is a bust they girls have started another one; Maggie's turn to go broody I guess.....

Since we will be headed South soon; has anybody been to the Renaissance Faire in Bristol? Any pointers/tips you could give me??? I think the kids will enjoy themselves immensely.........

Having a BBQ later today to celebrate the 4th. I'm going to try and get a nap in before everyone arrives....... everyone have fun and stay safe!

Just remembered, meant to ask. Who made that Cherry Vodka for the bash???? I'd like to try making some. We made Choke Cherry vodka but I think I let it sit way to long. It also had sugar in it? So whoever that was care to share your recipe?

What other fruits would it work with?? Inquiring minds want to know !!!

Thank you all for the replies. It is very much appreciated. I know you are all busy with yard or family stuff today.

Dottie looks much better this afternoon. She is sectioned off in the chick area, which the chicks quickly outgrew, and is pacing, wanting to go out with the rest of the flock. I haven't felt her yet today, but she looks like she isn't quite as swollen today, and she is definitely walking alot better than the past couple of days.
The reason she has some chick food is because I had some left over, not because I thought the amprollium would help her. I just wanted to make sure she was eating, and by the way the other older gals would make a bee-line for that food, I figured it must taste really good & a little couldn't hurt.
All my gals get free-choice oyster shell all the time, & recycled shells from time to time.
I checked out water belly, but I don't think it is that. She has no problems breathing, and it seemed to be most prevalent in very young broilers.

TO, cute duckies! And wicked spurs! How long did you have to keep up with the aspirating? Is that all you did for her? I've been researching her symptoms, but there are a few different things it could be, and they all have differing ways of treating. If I could just identify the most likely culprit, I could concentrate on the best way to treat her. I'd hate to medicate her if it isn't going to do anything.

Sorry to hear you couldn't sleep, BL4. I hope you aren't too dragged out today. I usually never sleep for crud on the 4th, so I made sure I took a pseudo Tylenol PM before bed. My head was aching too.

I'm glad to hear about that ultralight pilot. And Bristol is a lot of fun, just kinda on the expensive side. Go to their website & check out their deals. They usually have a discount if you buy the tickets in advance & print them out at home. They have a lot of things to do for the kids. And they have elephant & camel rides, jousting, dancing horses, trained raptors and a lot of "sideshows" to watch. FT & I were talking about getting together sometime & heading down there. Oh, get there early. LOTS of traffic! You should maybe let us know when you're heading down. We could maybe meet you there. That is, if you don't mind being seen in public with the likes of us!

Cind, I hope your wrist feels better soon too.

MLH, you are going to absolutely love your orchard. Just keep a watchful eye out for those darn tent caterpillars.

Thanks again, everybody, and please keep the suggestions coming if you can.

Happy Independents Day!

Sweetfolly I candled the chicken eggs from you and all 5 are going.
