Hi Brandi...

TerriO..Nice bucket of colorful eggs!

I do not have Marrans. I hear they are hard to hatch. I am getting to old for all of this stress. I finally have one pip on one of my shipped eggs..this is taking a long time. I think this bator needs a fan. After this hatch I am going to try to put my old puter fan in it and see if I can get better regulated temps. I am to old for all of this lack of sleep and stress. It is so much easier in spring to shove a bunch of eggs under a hen.

Hi guys. All of this talk of eggs has got me wanting to hatch some of my own. I was thinking that I would like to hatch them in the spring, like March. I do not have an incubator, and was hoping to have them hatched by their mama. Will the one who lays the eggs hatch them, or do I need to put them under someone else? I'm hoping to not have to bring them in the house, but I'm thinking if I want a spring hatch I will have to start the end of February. Is that time of year too cold for mama to hatch and take care of her own chicks?

Thank you, Carol, for the info on the horse.

Very informative! I really know nothing about any breed of horses, but they have been around for how many thousands of years now? And knowing humans, we have undoubtedly tinkered and manipulated with their breeding for almost as long, so who really knows what horses really looked like "naturally". They have been bred by us to be utilitarian for whatever task we decided to breed them for. So I guess beauty is just in the eye of the beholder? Never fear, I'm shutting up now.

Terri, I can see which one is your blue egg. I'm sure it is nowhere near as awesome as it is in person, but it's still a beaut. Congrats! I love your blue bucket too. Yeah, I know. DH gives me that same look............

Judge, if you get a hen that sticks to the nest like she has Super Glue on her undercarriage, then she is broody & will most likely hatch you some eggs, hopefully.

Having an incubator or backup broody also helps alleviate some of the stress.

When one of my hens went broody on New Years Eve 2011, DH insisted I order my first incubator "just in case........." . Oh yeah!

Otherwise, a hen won't just sit on eggs.

Oh, and if you have a broody, she will usually keep them warm enough, both the eggs & the chicks (I have heard some stories about bad mamas too).
Terri can give you some great stories/examples of good ones. She had a hen hatch out chicks in some horriffic cold temps, and she says they (the chicks) are the hardiest birds she has, and Terri has alot of birds.

Welcome Brandi!!

TO, speaking of ham... I made potato soup with ham tonight. Been craving it for awhile now. Think I'll put creamy chicken and wild rice soup on the menu for next week!

delisha- I finally have a couple of internal pips now too, also on shipped eggs. Still keeping my fingers crossed.

BigZ-hope you can get rid of those mice!

ok- so I need to wait until one of the hens go broody and then quick put some eggs under her? In the fall it was always one of the chanticlars that went broody, but it probably be one of the barred rocks that I would be putting under her- will she still take care of the babies? Would she and the eggs need to be separated, or could they just take up one of the egg boxes that the rest would normally use if she wasn't in there? Will the other chickens eat the babies?

before I forget.. Brower has just released a recall of one of their hatchers..

TH120 top hatch model..

It has caused at least 3 fires from a faulty base..

I have 10 posts to read, then I will be back......

Evening all........... No luck with figuring out these taxes....... the lady I talked to said, my Tax person put Adams UI in the wrong line? SS benefits line? so how does that make me owe 1200.00..????? it was still reported what difference is it if its in line 19 or line 20?? so confused,,,, they are making it sound like we had almost 5 grand in unreported income??????? so called my Tax lady no reply? left 2 messages still no reply, probably gonna be hung out for the wolves.......... go figure my typical luck.......... will try again tomorrow.
Anyway all is ok on the home front for now, Adams kids called tonight they got all there presents today and opened them while I listened over the line, wish Adam was home, he is gonna call em later when he stops to sleep, he was getting loaded at Cargil salt on lake Erie, when I talked to him around 5........ he had maybe 5 hours of drive time left, so will be spending the night in MI. tonight then he has to bring that load back to Chilton. Then who knows where.
I really don't know what's wrong with my chickens??????? why on earth are they still laying like crazy, my fridge is full of eggs I have 16 doz. in there and I'm collecting 28 to 32 eggs a day from 33 hens???? I guess no one told them its winter and they are suppose to slow it down some........... I went to take 10 doz. to the salvation army again Monday but they were closed. so now I have 16 doz, and have no idea what to do with all these eggs.......... I made eggnog, pumpkin pies, potato salad, deviled eggs, and no matter how fast I use them they are laying me more. Never thought I would have this problem, by how everyone talked, I was hoping 33 hens would keep us in eggs for the winter, heck I can feed an army on these things. and I have at least 9 of my EE's that give me a blue or green egg, so them odds were worth ordering for, I only ordered 10, and 1 is either not yet laying or lays a cream egg. so if anyone here is having trouble keeping up with there egg orders let me know I have more than enough............ LOL
TO hope aunti is doing better tonight and mom stays good. I have the little rat problem here too BigZ, when ya figure out how to get rid of them let mew know I think I have a 1000 of em this winter. every time
I open the garage door for the horses midnight feeding they scatter every where........So that is about all I can remember just now..... welcome to all the newbies................... Kim
PS no matter how pure and how much that coat is eye catching that horse is ugly!!!!!!!!!! LOL in my opinion the mosst beautiful horse I have ever seen is Gypsy Vanner.......... or an Arabian....... at least they do not look like funny looking giraffes........
